Colonels take all three games in Hiram series
The Cass Colonels swept a region doubleheader with Hiram Thursday night at LakePoint to complete a three-game season sweep of the Hornets in Region 7-5A play. The Colonels won the opening game 4-0 and took the second game Thursday, 11-4, and defeating Hiram 7-1 on Tuesday.
Pitchers Cayden Roberts and Aidan Larkin combined on a one-hitter in Game 1.
Roberts did not allow a hit in six innings and struck out two. Larkin surrendered a leadoff single in the seventh inning, but struck out two and preserved the shutout.
Cass grabbed a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The big blows in the inning included a double by Bentley Markley and a triple off the bat of Larkin. Carson Hill drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly.
Larkin tripled again in the third inning and scored on a Roberts groundout.
In the nightcap, the Cass offense pounded out 11 hits to score 11 runs.
The Colonels led 3-1 early, but had to come-from-behind after trailing 4-3 heading to the bottom of the fifth. Cass knotted the score at 4-all in the fifth before posting a seven-run sixth inning for the win.
Devan Hutchinson (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K) picked up the second game win on the mound for the Colonels in relief of starter Chase Botts (4 IP, 1ER, 0H, 4BB, 2K) and Connor Jenkins (1 IP, 3ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K).
Markley finished the double header with five hits including a double and one RBI. Larkin had four hits including a double, two triples, and three RBIs. Andrew Middleton finished with three hits including a triple, a double, and three RBIs. Hill (2 RBIs), Todd Gaddy, and Wesley Collins contributed one hit apiece. Roberts and Jenkins added one RBI each.
Hiram fall to 1-13 for the season and 0-3 in Region 7-5A.
Cass (4-11, 3-0) starts a three-game region series with 7th-ranked Blessed Trinity Tuesday at home at 5:55 p.m.
