Colonels too much for the Hornets


Cayden Roberts tossed a five-inning, complete-game Thursday in the Colonels' 11-1 win over Hiram.

Cass baseball swept a doubleheader with Hiram Thursday night at the Cass Athletic Complex to complete a three-game series sweep of the Hornets.


The Colonels won 11-1 in five innings in Thursday’s first game and then took the nightcap, 6-0.


Cayden Roberts (5 IP, 1ER, 3H, 0BB, 4K) tossed a five-inning, complete game to earn the pitching win in Game 1. A trio of Cass pitchers — Hunter Lovett, Trenton Payne, and Devan Hutchinson — combined to blank to Hornets in Game 2.


Lovett (3 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 6K) made the start on the mound. Payne (3 IP, 0R, 4H, 1BB, 4K) and Hutchinson (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) worked in relief.


Connor Jenkins (two doubles, 4 RBIs) and Jesiel Moctezuma (double, RBI) had four hits each in the two games. Chase Tatum homered and had two doubles with three RBIs. Nic Wright also had three hits and two RBIs on the day. Cayden Roberts homered and doubled completing a four RBI day. Hunter Lovett chipped in two hits and Carson Hill added one hit and one RBI in the doubleheader.


The Colonels also stole 14 bases in the two games.


Hiram dropped to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in Region 7-5A.


Cass (8-5, 3-0) plays a three-game region series with Dalton next week. The Colonels host the Catamounts Tuesday at 5:55 p.m., travel to Dalton Thursday, and host the third game of the series Friday.
