Colonels win Region 7-5A Traditional title; Woodland second, Cartersville fourth

The Cass wrestling team won the 2023 Region 7-5A Traditional team championship Saturday and will advance eleven individuals to the GHSA state sectionals next Saturday (Feb. 11) at Cambridge High School.


The Colonels finished the day with 239 points with Woodland placing second with 218 points. Dalton (144) finished third, Cartersville (108) fourth, Calhoun (106) fifth, and Hiram (48) was sixth.


Woodland qualified 13 individuals for the state sectionals while Cartersville had nine state sectional qualifiers.


Individuals had to finish in the top four at region to advance. Next Saturday, the top six in each weight division at Cambridge will advance to the State Championship Tournament at the Macon Centreplex February 16-18.


Ten of the eleven wrestlers for Cass advanced as Region 7-5A champions.


Rowdy Duck

Cass wrestlers Lee Camp (106), Hunter Barrett (113), Caden Alford (120), Jake Crapps (126), Rowdy Duck (132), Tyler McKnight (144), Mason Tompkins (150), Kriecg Roe (157), Zach McKnight (165), and Parker Dunn (190) each won their respective weight divisions. Tanner Toups (138) placed third for the Colonels.

Kwadrus Wilson

Woodland had three weight class champions. Hayden Santora (138), Champ Hidden (215), and Kwadrus Wilson (285) were region winners. Amari Kinnamore (106), Zachary Wallace (144), Heath Tatum (165), Melvin Ramos (175), and Owen Jones (190) were region runners-up.


Aiden Buchan (113), Paul Lanier (126), Tristen Clapp (132), and Jovante Luke (157) had third place finishes for Woodland and Nathan Cates (120) advanced with a fourth place finish for the Wildcats.


Cartersville had a pair of second placers in Eaiden Neal (126) and Talan Nix (138).


Grant Adams (120), Montgomery Tompkins (144), Jonathon Neal Radford (175), Giancarlo Rivadeneyra (190), and Delroy Hurst (285) each advanced to sectionals with third place finishes while Julian Cline (106), and Jackson Latimer (150) finished fourth for the Purple Hurricanes.


The top four from Region 7-5A will be bracketed with the top four placers from Regions 1, 3, and 6 next Saturday at Cambridge.


Regions 2, 4, 5, and 8 of Class 5A will be in action Saturday at Locust Grove High School.
