Earwood, Hurricanes blank Calhoun to remain unbeaten in region play
Micah Earwood struck out 13 and scattered only three hits in a seven inning shutout performance Monday as Cartersville won 7-0 at Calhoun.
Earwood needed only 98 pitches in his complete-game effort and allowed only two baserunners after the first inning.
Class AAAAA 5th-ranked Cartersville took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, added three more runs in the fifth and scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings for their seven-run total. Calhoun committed five errors in the game leading to five unearned runs.
Curt Bonner sparked the Cartersville offense with a three-hit game. Seven other Canes — Hank Smith, Parker McPherson, Colt McKibben, Drew Rothschild, Elliott Eastin, Davis Williams, and Sam Melton — finished with one hit each. Brasfield drove in one run with a sacrifice fly and Blake Sutton was credited with a pair of RBIs.
The loss for the 6th-ranked Yellow Jackets (6-5, 1-3) was their third straight, coming off a doubleheader loss at Blessed Trinity last Friday. Cartersville improved to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. The two teams will match up again Friday in a doubleheader at Richard Bell Field to complete their Region 7-AAAAA three-game series.
