Excel Christian Academy Eagles win at Unity Christian


The Excel Christian Academy Eagles took a 23-3 lead Saturday in the first quarter and led by 17 points by the end of the period but the host Unity Christian Lions came roaring back in the second quarter to cut the ECA lead to 38-33 by halftime of the game in Rome.


Unity knocked down six three-pointers in the second period as they outscored Excel 27-15 in the quarter.


After maintaining their five-point advantage through the third quarter, the Eagles extended their lead to 71-60 midway through the fourth only to have Unity cut the lead to 76-70 with 0:35 remaining. Excel was able to close out the win down the stretch.


Kyron McClendon and Comari Nettles led the Eagles with 17 points each. Jacob Taylor finished with 15 points and Jakaden Barkley added 14 for Excel Christian.


Austin Wilkerson led Unity Christian (4-10, 2-4) with a game-high 29 points.


Excel Christian (9-8, 5-0 GAPPS I-AA Region 1) hosts Shiloh Hills Tuesday at 6 p.m. as the Eagles move into the second half of their region slate.
