Excel Christian opens season with win over Cornerstone


Jacob Taylor paced ECA Thursday night with 30 points in their win over Cornerstone Prep.

The Excel Christian boys basketball team outscored visiting Cornerstone Prep 18-4 in the third quarter Thursday night to pull away for a 73-36 win in their season opener.


Cornerstone led 12-10 after one period and Excel held a narrow 23-21 advantage at the intermission, but the host Eagles distanced themselves from the Cougars in the second half.


Jacob Taylor led Excel with 30 points. Jakaden Barkley followed with 15. Camari Nettles and David Jinx chipped in seven each. Christian Viera scored six while Trey Webb and Matthew Viera added four apiece for the Eagles.


Carson Hicks led Cornerstone (1-3) with 10 points.


Excel Christian (1-0) hosts Oakwood Christian of Chickamauga Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.


The Excel girls' basketball team debuts Friday night at Central Christian of Sharpsburg in a 6:30 p.m. tip.
