Excel completes season sweep of Cornerstone; Adairsville teams sweep Sonoraville

Excel Christian Academy completed a two-game, regular season sweep of Cornerstone Prep Academy Saturday evening in Acworth with a 50-47 road win.
The Eagles trailed 47-43 when Jakaden Barkley knocked down a three-point shot with nine seconds remaining. A deflected inbound pass resulted in a held ball and an Excel possession with just 0:06 left in regulation. Excel’s Elijah Payne received a pass in the lane and scored to give the Eagles the lead before an ensuing Cornerstone turnover put the host Cougars in a fouling situation. Payne sealed the victory for Excel at the free throw line.
Excel had edged Cornerstone November 22 in overtime, 79-74. Saturday’s game was again close throughout. The Eagles led 11-8 after one quarter but trailed 22-21 at the intermission. Excel held a 30-29 advantage going into the final period. Barkley and Payne led the Eagles’ scoring attack with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Jacob Taylor followed with 10. Camari Nettles finished with seven points and Trey Webb added four for Excel. Devon Sweat paced Cornerstone Prep (4-6) with 19 points. Timothy Greene scored 14 and Jonathan Everill added 11 points for the Cougars.
Excel (5-2) hosts Atlanta Jewish Academy next Saturday night in a 9 p.m. tip.
ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 73, SONORAVILLE 58

The Adairsville boys started slowly Saturday night in their home opener, but a strong third quarter lifted the Tigers to a 73-58 Region 6-AAA win over Sonoraville.
Adairsville led 15-11 after the opening eight minutes and led 21-19 at halftime before outscoring the Phoenix 32-21 in the third quarter to take control.
T.J. Printup scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Tigers. Tre Winters followed with 15. Zac Postell scored eight points. Tre Mitchell contributed seven. Zach Weaver and Hayden Poarch added six points apiece for Adairsville.
Ethan Hibberts led Sonoraville with 18 points. Jaxon Pate and Donovan McDaniel scored 14 each for the Phoenix (1-6, 0-3).
Adairsville (4-0, 3-0) hosts LaFayette Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 49, SONORAVILLE 48

Visiting Sonoraville had multiple shots in the final seconds but the Adairsville girls held on for a 49-48 Region 6-AAA victory at home Saturday night.
The Lady Tigers led 19-10 at the end of the first quarter but the Phoenix grabbed a 31-29 lead going into halftime. Adairsville regained the lead in the third quarter taking a 39-37 advantage to the final eight minutes.
Lexie Childers scored a game-high 16 points to lead Adairsville. Autumn Henderson scored nine. Haley Stiles and Ya’Torrean Hale followed with seven each. Alissa Winters contributed six points while Makayla Wade and Naxyria Roberts added three and one point, respectively.
Kayleigh Kelley led Sonoraville (4-4, 1-2) with 11 points.
Adairsville (5-2, 1-3) entertains LaFayette Tuesday night starting at 6 p.m.
PAIDEIA 55, CASS BOYS 40
A day after snapping a four-game losing streak, the Cass Colonels dropped a non-region game to the Paideia Pythons, 55-40, at Tri-Cities High School in Atlanta. Paideia, a Class A private program, evened its season record at 5-5 with the win. Cass (3-5) plays at Riverwood in Atlanta Monday night at 7:30 p.m. No game report was provided for this game.
