Friday's football roundup: Canes rally for win at Allatoona, Colonels cruise to home victory

Cartersville rallied from a 20-point deficit Friday night for a road win while Cass cruised at home for the Colonels first win of the season.

Woodland fell to visiting Model in overtime and Adairsville suffered a loss at high-scoring Rabun County.

CARTERSVILLE 28, ALLATOONA 20

Malachi Jefferies had a 13-yard TD run in the Canes 28-20 win Friday at Allatoona.

Canes’ freshman quarterback Nate Russell was forced into Friday night’s game at Allatoona in a tough situation.

Cartersville’s starting quarterback Paul Gamble had been knocked out of the game late in the first half with the Hurricanes trailing the Buccaneers 17-0.

A 29-yard field goal by Allatoona on the Bucs first possession of the second half made the score 20-0 and the night looked grim for the Cartersville faithful.

The ninth grade signal caller responded in a big way, however, leading Class 5A top-ranked Cartersville to four touchdowns in the final 13 minutes of the game and a 28-20 come-from-behind victory.

Russell connected with Collin Fletcher for a 69-yard touchdown pass in the final minute of the third quarter to make the score 20-7. Four minutes into the fourth quarter, Malachi Jeffries darted into the end zone with a 13-yard run narrowing the lead to 20-14. Russell then found Ja’mauri Brice with a 27-yard scoring strike that gave Cartersville a 21-20 lead with 5:53 remaining.

Allatoona fumbled on its next possession at its own 12-yard line leading to the Hurricanes’ and Russell’s final score.

With 3:04 to play, the freshman signal caller scored on a 4-yard keeper making the score 28-20.

An interception on Allatoona’s next possession allowed the Canes to run out the clock.

The loss dropped the Buccaneers to 0-3 on the season.

Cartersville (3-0) hosts Columbia next Friday night in a 7:30 p.m. start at Weinman Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on WBHF-Cartersville (100.3 FM / AM1450) with pregame coverage beginning at 6 p.m.

CASS 58, DREW 15

Mac Nelson (taking handoff from Devin Henderson) had three touchdown runs Friday night as Cass beat Drew 58-15. Henderson had a touchdown passing, running, and receiving in the Colonels' victory.

Devin Henderson caught a 13-yard touchdown pass, ran for a 47-yard touchdown, and threw a 17-yard scoring strike to help guide Cass to a 58-15 home win over Drew Friday night at Cochran Stadium.

Mac Nelson added touchdown runs of 12-, 15-, and 2-yards for the Colonels and freshman quarterback Brodie McWhorter contributed a pair of first quarter touchdown passes.

Colonels receiver Sacovie White hauled in touchdown receptions from 16- and 17-yards. He also added a 63-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Cass led 16-0 at the end of the first quarter and built a 30-0 lead before taking a 51-13 lead to the intermission.

Cameron Prather threw for the two Titans touchdowns. Jacobi Carter caught a 32 yard touchdown pass and Makel Lloyd hauled in a 52-yard scoring pass.

The loss dropped Drew to 0-2 on the season,

Cass (1-2) travels to Adairsville next Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The game will be broadcast on BartowSportsZone.com with pregame coverage at 6 p.m. and kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

MODEL 17, WOODLAND 14 (overtime)

Chase Carson scored the Wildcats first touchdown Friday night on a 2-yard run.

Model battled back in the second half Friday night at Woodland to send the game to overtime tied 14-14. The Blue Devils’ defense then forced a turnover on Woodland’s first possession of overtime setting up placekicker Daniel Veillon’s 26-yard game winning field goal on the ensuing possession as the Blue Devils escaped with a 17-14 win.

Chase Carson capped a quick three play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run that gave Woodland an early 7-0 lead. Two pass completions by Wildcats’ quarterback Brelace Williams set up the opening drive score.

In the second quarter, Model’s Jeremiah Gamble tied the game with a 25-yard run. The touchdown capped a short, 37-yard drive.

The Wildcats regained the lead on the ensuing kickoff. Isaiah Livsey returned the kick 63 yards to put Woodland ahead 14-7 at halftime.

Model tied the score again with a methodical drive on the opening possession of the second half. The Blue Devils drove 74 yards on 14 plays and used almost seven minutes of the third period. Quarterback Dillon Silver finished off the drive with a 6-yard touchdown toss to Jeremias Heard. Veillon’s PAT kick knotted the score at 14-14.

Following a scoreless fourth quarter, the game headed to overtime.

Model won the overtime coin toss and chose to go on defense first.

On third down for Woodland, a Williams pass was deflected and picked off by Silver.

Model then ran two plays for short yardage before lining up for Veillon’s game-winning field goal on third down.

The Blue Devils improved to 1-2 on the season.

Woodland (1-2) travels to Pepperell next Friday.

RABUN COUNTY 72, ADAIRSVILLE 36

Chris Roper caught a touchdown pass and ran for two other scores Friday in the Tigers' 72-36 loss at Rabun County.

Rabun County quarterback Keegan Stover and the Wildcats tossed seven touchdown passes Friday night including two of 50+ yards in a 72-36 home win over Adairsville.

The Wildcats added a pair of rushing touchdowns including a 40-yard dash by Lang Windham to go with a 38-yard field goal in their victory.

Rabun, ranked 4th in Class A Division I, led 49-21 at halftime.

Adairsville’s Jonathon Gough connected on a 53-yard touchdown pass to Chris Roper that made the score 21-7 at the time. Roper added two other rushing touchdowns while Caden Copeland and Ethan Blome also added touchdown runs for Adairsville in their loss.

Rabun County improved to 3-0 on the season.

Adairsville (1-1) hosts Cass next Friday in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The game will be broadcast on BartowSportsZone.com with pregame coverage starting at 6 p.m.
