Friday’s local basketball: Lady Tigers knock off region-leader, Cartersville teams sweep at Woodland

It was a busy Friday night on the hardwoods, with all the local high school teams in action.


The Cartersville Lady Canes and Hurricanes secured victories at Woodland. The Cass Lady Colonels defeated Allatoona, and the Adairsville Lady Tigers gave Gilmer their first region loss.



CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 54, WOODLAND 12


The fourth-ranked Lady Canes led 26-0 after the opening eight minutes and strolled to a 54-12 win on Friday at Woodland.


Kaytlin Arnold scored all 11 of her points in the first half and added four steals and three assists in the Cartersville win. Zoe McCurry also scored 11 points with four assists and three steals. Trinity Montgomery added eight.


Reign West finished with eight points for the Lady Cats.


Woodland (3-15, 0-7) hosts Cass on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and hosts Hiram on Friday.


Cartersville (14-2, 7-0) plays Collins Hill on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. at the Rome MLK Showcase. The Lady Canes travel to Dalton on Tuesday and host Allatoona on Friday.



CARTERSVILLE BOYS 90, WOODLAND 57


The Hurricanes built a 43-17 halftime lead and won at Woodland on Friday, 90-57.


Kyron McClendon led all scorers with 27 points that included six buckets from behind the arc. McClendon added six assists and four steals. Wyatt Thomason followed with 22 points, eight rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Nas Bennett contributed 20 points with eight rebounds, and Xavier Lowe added 13 points, three steals, and two assists for Cartersville. 


Landon Dougherty led Woodland with 15 points. Jonathan Hart and Caiden Moore each scored  10. 


The Wildcats (8-10, 1-6) host Cass on Tuesday and Hiram on Friday.


Cartersville (13-3, 7-0) squares off with Section (AL) on Monday at 4 p.m. at the Rome MLK Showcase. The Canes visit Dalton on Tuesday and host Allatoona on Friday.



ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 44, GILMER 41


The Lady Tigers handed host Gilmer its first region loss of the season on Friday evening by topping the Lady Bobcats, 44-41.


Lily Roberts paced Adairsville with 12 points. Samantha Gough and Savannah Viktora each added 10 as the Lady Tigers won their third straight.


Makenna Taylor led Gilmer (11-7, 5-1) with 11 points. Bree Burnett added nine.


Adairsville (8-11, 3-4) is currently fifth in the Region 7-3A standings. The Lady Tigers host Heritage-Catoosa on Tuesday at 6 p.m., and travel to Northwest Whitfield on Friday at 7 p.m.



CASS GIRLS 50, ALLATOONA 34


The Lady Colonels moved into third place in the Region 7-4A standings with a 50-34 home win Friday over Allatoona.


Cass held a 22-19 lead at halftime and led 35-27 through three quarters before pulling away in the final eight minutes.


Nakayla Evans scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Lady Colonels. Anizah Taylor contributed 14, and Yvonne Ellison added seven points for Cass.


Addie Gray led the Lady Bucs (6-10, 4-3) with 13 points.


Cass (6-9, 5-2) hosts North Cobb on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Lady Colonels travel to Woodland on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. tip, and visit Southeast Whitfield on Friday at 7 p.m.



ARLINGTON CHRISTIAN 60, EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 55


The Excel Christian Academy boys led 48-41 entering the fourth quarter on Friday in Fairburn, but were outscored 19-7 in the final eight minutes.


Tyler Adams and Khalib Brooks led Arlington Christian (10-5) with 20 and 19 points, respectively.


Mier Bell poured in 21 points for ECA. Damir McBride added 13 points.


Excel Christian (15-5, 4-0) visits Oakwood Christian for a region game on Tuesday and will host Arlington Christian in a rematch on Friday.



ALLATOONA 64, CASS BOYS 40


The visiting Buccaneers outscored host Cass 20-9 in the fourth quarter on Friday, pulling away for a 64-40 Region 7-4A win. 


Carter Turnbow led Allatoona (11-6, 5-2) with 14 points. Amari Smallwood followed with 12 points, and Griffin Mays added 10.


Derrick Sams scored 13 points for the Colonels. Cam’ron Beauford contributed 11.


Cass (3-12, 2-5) hosts North Cobb on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The Colonels visit Woodland on Tuesday and make the trip to Southeast Whitfield on Friday.



GILMER 81, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 38


The host Bobcats completed a regular-season sweep of the Adairsville boys on Friday in Ellijay, 81-38.


Following an 18-18 first quarter, Gilmer opened up a 46-27 advantage by halftime en route to their win.


Keegan Bryant led the Bobcats (6-12, 2-4) with 25 points. Preston McVey scored 19 points, and Jaden Sevcech added 17.


Eli Pearson led the Tigers with eight points. Drew Nida and Lucas Poarch each added seven.


Adairsville (2-17, 1-6) hosts Heritage-Catoosa on Tuesday and travels to Northwest Whitfield on Friday.
