Friday's soccer roundup: Cartersville sweeps Cherokee; Adairsville girls defeat Sonoraville

The Cartersville soccer teams swept visiting Cherokee Friday night while Adairsville split games with visiting Sonoraville.

The Cass teams both suffered home losses Friday to Villa Rica.

CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2, CHEROKEE 1

Cartersville’s Mallory Nicklas gave the Lady Canes an early lead Friday night when she scored from just above the eighteen-yard box. The goal came off an assist from Jasmine Eckert in the 12th minute.

The Lady Canes’ took a 2-0 first half lead off a corner kick from Nicklas that was tapped in by Hattie Beth Williams. Cartersville carried that advantage into the intermission.

Midway through the second half, Cherokee cut the Cartersville lead to 2-1 off a corner of their own.

Cartersville held on down the stretch, however, for a 2-1 win.

The Lady Canes (2-0) host Villa Rica Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

CARTERSVILLE BOYS 1, CHEROKEE 0

The Canes soccer team earned its first win of the year Friday night with a 1-0 victory over visiting Cherokee.

Melvin Velasquez converted on a penalty kick in the 10th minute of the match.

Collier Parker had several key saves in the contest to maintain a clean sheet.

The loss dropped the visiting Warriors to 0-1 on the season.

Cartersville (1-1-1) hosts Villa Rica Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 2, SONORAVILLE 1

The Lady Tigers earned their second win of the season Friday night with a 2-1 defeat of visiting Sonoraville.

Lizzie LeMay scored in the opening minute to give Adairsville a 1-0 lead. The goal came off four clean passes from Victoria Loudon to Maddie Gossett to Gabbie Becerra who was credited with the first of her two assists.

Sonoraville tied the game prior to the intermission, but the Lady Tigers scored the deciding goal in the 52nd minute. Elle Causby scored the clincher off another assist from Becerra.

Freshman keeper Bethany Kilgore made several key stops in the victory while the coaching staff credited Greer Cofield’s defense and the play of Jordyn Hartline.

The Adairsville girls (2-1) host Murray County Monday evening.

SONORAVILLE 7, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0

The Tigers stayed competitive with visiting Sonoraville in the opening 20 minutes according to coach John Terrell.

“We stayed competitive in the opening 20 minutes, but some mental mistakes and our inexperience began to show after that,” said Terrell. “We’re still learning and still dealing with the injury bug. Hopefully, it helps us build some depth for later in the season.”

The Phoenix improved to 1-1.

Adairsville (0-3) hosts Murray County Monday evening.

VILLA RICA 10, CASS GIRLS 0

The Cass girls dropped a 10-0 decision to visiting Villa Rica Friday night to even their season record at 1-1. The Lady Colonels won their season opener Tuesday over Pickens, 7-2.

The Lady Colonels host Sonoraville Monday at 5 p.m.

VILLA RICA 2, CASS BOYS 1

The Colonels lost 2-1 to visiting Villa Rica Friday night.

Cass (1-1) hosts Sonoraville Monday evening at 7 p.m.
