Generals edge Cartersville teams on penalty kicks

The Cartersville girls' and boys' soccer teams dropped shootout decisions in Ringgold on Thursday night to the Heritage-Catoosa Generals. The Lady Canes went to the shootout session after a 2-2 draw in regulation. The Hurricanes and Generals went to the penalty kick period following a 1-1 regulation draw. Teams from different classifications do not play the two overtime periods. Instead, they go directly to a shootout to decide the outcome.
HERITAGE-CATOOSA 1, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 1 (PKs)
The Cartersville boys’ soccer team battled Heritage-Catoosa to a 1-1 draw in regulation but lost the game on penalty kicks in Ringgold. The Canes led 1-0 for most of the game, but the Generals scored a goal in the 65th minute to knot the score.
Cartersville scored in the 14th minute on a cross from Ed Hernandez to Adair Milian, who tapped it in.
Heritage (2-4) made all five penalty kicks in the extra session. Cartersville only converted three.
The Hurricanes (1-1) open Region 7-4A action on Tuesday at home against Allatoona.
HERITAGE-CATOOSA 2, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 2 (PKs)
The Lady Canes and Lady Generals scored two goals in regulation Thursday night, but Heritage-Catoosa won the match on penalty kicks in Ringgold.
Heritage opened the scoring for an early lead, but Cartersville equalized on a penalty kick goal by Kylie McMichael. Mallory Nicklas gave the Lady Canes a 2-1 lead just before the intermission, but the Lady Generals tied the score on a penalty shot that sent the game to halftime tied 2-2.
The teams battled scoreless in the second half, but Heritage won the game on shootout penalty kicks. The Lady Generals (3-3) converted four kicks in the shootout period. Cartersville made three.
“Layne Callan had a phenomenal game for us in net,” said Cartersville Lady Canes’ coach MaryBeth Popham. “She blocked several shots by the Generals and had some key saves.”
The Lady Canes (0-3) will host Allatoona on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
