GHC softball splits games Friday at Sand Mountain Classic


Georgia Highlands College softball split a pair of games Friday at the Sand Mountain Classic in Albertville, Alabama. The Chargers defeated Snead State CC 4-3 but lost to Pearl River CC, 5-3.


Malone Aldridge drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly and a walk-off victory over Snead State. The RBI was set up by three consecutive singles in the inning from Annsley Todd, Katie Traynor, and Madison Dennis of the Chargers.


Haley Robinson had two hits including a double and one RBI for Georgia Highlands.


Gracee Ellis picked up the pitching win for the Chargers. She tossed all seven innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven.


In the loss to Pearl River, the Chargers trailed 3-1 through five innings before narrowing the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the sixth. The Wildcats responded with two more runs in their half of the sixth. GHC scored a run in the seventh, but came up two runs short.


Both teams had ten hits in the contest.


Aldridge, Robinson, and Taylor Justice pace Georgia Highlands with two hits each in the loss. Robinson’s two hits were doubles. Dennis also doubled for the Chargers.


Maggie Schandera (3 IP, 3R, 2ER, 4H, 1BB, 1K) suffered the pitching loss for Georgia Highlands. Katie Traynor (3 IP, 2R, 1ER, 6H, 0BB, 2K) also pitched in relief.


Georgia Highlands (5-11) will play Southern Union State and Chattanooga State Saturday as the Sand Mountain Classic continues.
