Georgia Highlands pitcher Emily Ferro tossed a seven-inning, complete-game shutout Thursday night at Carol Brown Field in Cartersville to defeat Gordon State 5-0 in the Chargers’ first game of the GCAA Championship Tournament.

Ferro scattered six hits and three walks and kept the Highlanders off the scoreboard. She struck out four.

GHC scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead and added two insurance runs in the fifth. Mary Catherine Kimball and Emma Darrow doubled home runs in the second. Anslee Logan and Emmalee Freeman doubled home runs in the fifth inning.

Freeman, Ferro, and Ahmani Green had two hits in the game. Kimball, Darrow, Grace Azpeitia, Anslee Logan, and Cece Williams each contributed one hit.

The tournament host Chargers (31-15) will play top-seeded Georgia Military College (38-14) at 4 p.m. on Friday. The winner will advance to the championship round on Saturday at 1 p.m. and will need only one additional win in the double-elimination tournament to capture the conference title. The loser will play an elimination game on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
