Hoops roundup: Colonels fall in OT at 9th-ranked Carrollton on rough night for local teams




On a tough night for local basketball teams, all nine teams from Cartersville and Bartow County suffered region losses Friday night.





 

TROUP COUNTY 56, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 37 Miya Moore and Cio Seigler scored 10 points each for Cartersville, but the Lady Canes fell at Troup County Friday night 56-37. Ariana Cochran chipped in six points and had five rebounds for Cartersville. Jaka’ya Draughn finished with five points. Jada Cunningham had four and Kiera Milline, who grabbed five boards, scored two points for the Lady Canes. With their win, the AAAA 5th-ranked Lady Tigers improved to 15-0 on the season and 5-0 in Region 5-AAAA. Cartersville (8-10, 1-5) plays at Cedartown Saturday night at 6 p.m. KELL 48, WOODLAND GIRLS 36 The Kell girls remained undefeated Friday night with their 20th win of the year in a victory at Woodland, 48-36. The visiting Lady Longhorns had eight players in the scoring column led by Crystal Henderson with nine points. Jamiah Gregory and Amaya Moss added eight each. Woodland was led by Morgan Cooper with 17 and Carli Clymer with 10 points. Ansley Evans and Abigail Taylor scored four each. Jordan Thompson added one. Class AAAAA 2nd-ranked Kell stays atop the Region 7-AAAAA standings at 11-0. Woodland (4-15, 2-9) travels to Hiram Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. COAHULLA CREEK 71, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 31 The Lady Tigers fell behind early and trailed the host Lady Colts 38-10 by halftime in a 71-31 loss Friday night at Coahulla Creek. Katelyn Richard poured in 29 points for the Colts. Brinkley Reed added 16. Autumn Richards scored seven for Adairsville. Ji’Leyah Mitchell and Haley Stiles followed with six points each for the Lady Tigers. Adairsville (5-15, 2-10) hosts Calhoun Tuesday night at 6 p.m. and travels to Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe next Friday night for a 7 p.m. start. CARROLLTON 65, CASS GIRLS 38 The Lady Colonels trailed 17-11 after one quarter and fell behind 33-15 by halftime in a Region 7-AAAAA loss Friday night at Carrollton. The host Lady Trojans improved to 13-8 overall and 9-3 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (15-7, 6-7) plays at Woodland Tuesday night at 6 p.m. and travels to Villa Rica next Friday — also a 6 p.m. tip. CARROLLTON 69, CASS BOYS 56 (Overtime) The Cass boys battled with host Carrollton evenly through the first 32 minutes Friday night, but lost in overtime to the Class AAAAA 9th-ranked Trojans, 69-56. Cass led 14-13 after one quarter and the two teams were knotted at 21-all at halftime. The Colonels led 36-35 after three quarters and had a late 51-50 lead before the game went to overtime with the teams tied at 53. The host Trojans outscored Cass 16-3 in the extra period to take home a 13-point region win and earn a season split with the Colonels. Carrollton (14-7, 8-4) was led by Melvin Edwards with 22 points and Marcellious Lockett with 20. Zaylan Chaney scored a game-hit 24 points for Cass. Braxton Benham followed with nine and C.J. Pipkin added eight points for the Colonels. Cass (14-8, 9-4) plays at Woodland Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. and will travel to Villa Rica next Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. tip. TROUP COUNTY 74, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 67 Jaquavious Whitfield and Gabe Cofield scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, Friday night to lead the host Tigers to a 74-67 Region 5-AAAA victory over Cartersville. Troup led 36-25 at halftime and held a 52-43 advantage after three quarters before holding on for a seven-point win. The Tigers improved to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in Region 5-AAAA. Kam Callahan led Cartersville with 21 points. The Canes (5-9, 1-5) play at Cedartown Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. NORTH COBB CHRISTIAN 106, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 43 North Cobb Christian improved to 11-8 overall and 7-1 in Region 6-A with a 106-43 win Friday night over Excel Christian Academy. Kalil Holley led ECA with 17 points. Rashard Doyal contributed 12 and Rayshawn Womack scored seven. Excel (3-16, 2-7) hosts Darlington Saturday at 4:30 p.m. COAHULLA CREEK 44, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 32 A slow offensive start led to an Adairsville loss Friday night at Coahulla Creek in Region 6-AAA action. The host Colts led 15-7 after the first eight minutes and held a 25-11 advantage ath halftime. Adairsville narrowed the margin to 33-22 by the end of the third period but eventually fell by 12. Gage Seibennener led Coahulla Creek with 12 points. Barrett Barbee followed with nine as the Colts improved to 8-12 overall and 5-8 in region play. Gaven Crunkleton led the Tigers with 16 points. Savaun Henderson and Malachi Gardner followed with eight and seven points, respectively. Adairsville (8-11, 5-7) hosts Calhoun Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. and travels to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Friday for an 8:30 p.m. tip. KELL 88, WOODLAND BOYS 28 Class AAAAA fifth-ranked Kell took a 30-5 lead after one quarter Friday night and led 58-12 at halftime on their way to a convincing Region 7-AAAAA win at Woodland. The visiting Longhorns improved to 16-4 on the year and 10-1 in region action. Woodland (2-18, 0-11) travels to Hiram Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. tip and will host Cass Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
