Hurricanes complete series sweep of Hiram


The Cartersville Hurricanes won a pair of run-rule shortened games Friday night at Richard Bell Field to complete a three-game Region 7-AAAAA series sweep of Hiram.

The Canes won 11-1 in five innings to open the doubleheader and took the nightcap 10-0 in six innings. Cartersville won the series opener Tuesday at Hiram, 14-4.

Phillip Schiltz tossed a five-inning complete game in the opener Friday night. He allowed only one, unearned run scattering five hits and a walk. Schiltz struck out nine Hornets.

In the second game, starting pitcher Mason McBee and reliever Colt McKibben combined on a three-hit shutout. McBee struck out six in four innings of work. McKibben registered three strikeouts.

Meanwhile, the Canes offense pounded out 25 hits in the doubleheader and scored two or more runs in six of their ten offensive frames.

Parker McPherson had five hits including three doubles and three RBIs in the twin bill. Blake Sutton had four hits including a double and three RBIs. Curt Bonner also finished the doubleheader with four hits including a triple and two RBIs.

Hank Smith contributed three hits with two RBIs for the night. Colt McKibbon had two hits and two RBIs in Game 1. Elliott Eastin had two hits in the second game.

Jake Brasfield tripled and drove in a pair of runs in the nightcap. Drew Rothschild and Jimbo Gaines registered one hit and one RBI each in the opener. Tyler Williamson and Trey Holstein tossed in one hit each and David Williams drove in a run.

Hiram falls to 2-8 overall and 0-3 in Region 7-AAAAA.

Cartersville has now won six of seven games and improves to 7-4 for the season and 3-0 in region play. The Canes begin their next three-game region series Tuesday at Calhoun.
