Jones wins Big Peach Mustang Stampede 5K; Canes, Colonels compete on GHSA state meet course


Woodland senior Tyler Jones won the individual boys title Saturday at the Big Peach Mustang Stampede 5K conducted at Allatoona Creek Park in Kennesaw.


Jones (16:31.20) finished just over six seconds ahead of Creekview’s Dillon Berger. Seth Grogan of Cherokee was third just over ten seconds behind.


The race by Jones helped lead the Wildcats to a sixth place team finish out of 16 teams and 140 individual runners. Parkview won the team competition followed by Creekview, Clarkston, Lovett, and Wesleyan.


The other Woodland scoring runners included Drew Thayer (25th, 18.04), Juan Mendoza (39th, 18:25), Landon McSwain (52nd, 18:34), and Kamron Chappell (60th, 18:52).


The Woodland girls placed fourth of 14 teams.


Parkview won the girls team race followed by Wesleyan and Creekview. The race included 113 runners.


Emma Segars (23rd, 21:34) paced the Lady Cats. She was followed by teammates Danielle Thayer (30th, 22:07), Miranda Pelow (31st, 22:08), Olivia Berry (32nd, 22:09), and Abby George (37th, 22:17).


Woodland joins Cartersville and Cass next Saturday at Dellinger Park for the Wire2Wire Invitational.


At the Carrollton Orthopaedic Invitational Saturday at Carrollton High School, the Cartersville boys placed 16th and the Cass boys were 26th of 39 teams in the Large School Division. The Cartersville girls finished 26th of 30 teams.



The races were held on the GHSA state meet course.



The boys race included 263 runners while the girls large division included 219 competitors.


Pope won the boys large division while McIntosh took the girls large division title.


Malachi Vosburgh (11th, 17:38) paced the Cartersville boys. Other scoring runs for the Canes included Hayden Mitchell (84th, 19:35), Barrett Stepp (103rd, 19:58), Micah Sanders (114th, 20:12), and Omar Pina (120th, 20:19).


Leonardo Galeana (107th, 20:04) led the Cass boys. Critton Gearhart (140th, 20:34), Adam Brush (169th, 21:00), Adam Pierce (175th, 21:13), and Sawyer Foy (176th, 21:13) rounded out the Colonels runners.


Meredith Gaines (126th, 26:05) and Vivi Vest (127th, 26:05) led the Lady Canes. Milena Bihm (161st, 27:25), Violet Earwood (189th, 29:16), and Rileigh Worthan (193rd, 29:27) were the other Cartersville runners.


Cass did not field a full team in the girls race, but Irelynn Wilmot (35:26) and Melinda McKinnon (37:09) participated in the large school girls division race.


Thursday at Rocky Face in Whitfield County, the Adairsville boys placed 11th of 22 teams in a race that included 170 runners and was won by Cedartown.


The Tigers were led by Griffin Bozeman (26th, 20:47). He was followed by Eli Pearson (29th, 20:56), Michael Spinks (69th, 22:26), Dutch Henderson (70th, 22:29), and Cody Teer (126th, 25:41) for Adairsville.


The Lady Tigers did not field a team score but had two runners compete in the girls race that involved 113 participants.


Callie Viktora placed 29th in 26:35. Caroline O’Kelley was 38th in 27:15.


The Adairsville teams will compete next on September 22 at the Wildwood Run in Dalton.
