Lady Canes advance, Hurricanes eliminated at Region 7-AAAAA tourney


Jamiya Moore led Cartersville with 12 points as the Lady Canes defeated Blessed Trinity 41-28.

The Cartersville Lady Canes took the lead early Monday night in the Region 7-AAAAA quarterfinals and never trailed in a 41-28 defeat of Blessed Trinity at the Storm Center. The win advances the Cartersville girls to the region semifinals Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against 2nd-ranked Cass and it also earns the Lady Canes a berth in the Class 5A State Tournament that begins next week.

Cartersville led 8-3 after one quarter; 21-10 at halftime; and 26-15 through three quarters on their way to the 13-point victory. Jamiya Moore led Cartersville with 12 points. Ansley Griffin followed with 10. Kiera Milline tossed in nine points with nine rebounds and Lehla Thomas added four points for the Hurricanes.

Cartersville (6-13) made 11 of 12 free throw attempts down the stretch to secure the victory. Emma Jacobs and Christa Lair led Blessed Trinity (5-16) with six points each.

Cartersville scored the opening bucket Monday night before Blessed Trinity went on a 20-3 run to end the first quarter. That built a 20-5 lead for the Titans by the end of the first quarter and they never trailed in a 16-point win.

With their Region 7-AAAAA quarterfinal win at The Storm Center, Blessed Trinity advances to Wednesday night’s tournament semifinals against top-seeded and 10th-ranked Cass at 8:30 p.m.

Blessed Trinity led by 17 points at halftime as they improved to 17-7 on the season.

Robert Novak hit a three-pointer with 3:11 remaining in the third quarter to narrow the Titans’ lead to 40-26. The Canes later cut the lead to 13 points twice in the fourth quarter, but Blessed Trinity had regained a 20-point advantage by the 2:45 mark of the final stanza.

Cartersville’s season ends with an 8-12 record.
