Lady Canes, Excel boys collect Saturday wins

The Cartersville girls and Excel Christian Academy boys picked up non-region wins Saturday while the Cartersville boys lost an overtime battle and the Woodland boys dropped their 12th straight.

CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 63, DALTON 56

Jamiya Moore scored 25 points and had five steals for Cartersville Saturday as the Lady Canes defeated Dalton at The Storm Center, 63-56.

Lehla Thomas added a double-double for the Lady Canes with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Ansley Griffin scored nine points. Kierra Milline dished out eight assists. Zoe Casey finished with seven points and Sequoyah McConnell added six points for Cartersville.

Following a 12-12 first quarter, Cartersville grabbed a 34-21 lead by halftime. Dalton narrowed the margin to 41-36 by the end of the third quarter, but the Lady Canes held on for a seven-point win. The loss dropped Dalton to 7-6 on the season.

Cartersville (4-9, 0-4 in Region 7-AAAAA) will host the top two teams in their region this week. Hiram comes to The Storm Center Tuesday at 6 p.m. Cass visits Friday night at 6 p.m.


DALTON 68, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 66 (OT)

In a game that remained tightly contested throughout, Dalton nipped Cartersville Saturday in overtime, 68-66.

Robert Novak paced the Hurricanes Saturday with 20 points, but Cartersville lost to visiting Dalton in overtime.

Cartersville led 19-16 at the end of the first quarter. The score was tied at halftime 35-35 and Dalton held a 52-48 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

The Canes outscored the Catamounts 14-10 in the final eight minutes to send the game to overtime knotted at 62-all.

Franklin Almonte scored a game-high 27 points for Dalton (9-8). Grayson Boyd followed with 15 points on five treys. Karim Page finished with 11 points and Ashton Blackwell added 10 for the Cats. Robert Novak led Cartersville with 20 points. Amarai Orr scored 14 and Kolbe Benham had 12points for the Hurricanes.

Cartersville (6-6, 1-3 in 7-AAAAA) hosts Hiram Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. and Cass Friday at 8 p.m.


EXCEL CHRISTIAN BOYS 71, ATLANTA JEWISH ACADEMY 68

The Excel Christian Academy boys were behind 41-29 at halftime Saturday night and trailed by as many as 19 points in the third quarter before rallying late for a three point win at Atlanta Jewish Academy.

The Eagles (7-9) were paced by Elijah Payne with 24 points. Blake Bailey and Khalil Holley followed with 19 points each. Atlanta Jewish Academy (3-4) had Noah Kalnitz post 19 points. Elliott Sokol and Simmy Wilson finished with 13 points apiece.

Excel travels to Christian Heritage in Dalton Tuesday for a 7 p.m. start. The Eagles then travel to North Cobb Christian Friday and Walker Saturday.



PEPPERELL 44, WOODLAND BOYS 38

The Woodland boys held a three point lead heading into the fourth quarter Saturday, but the Wildcats were outdueled 16-7 over the final eight minutes and dropped their 12th straight game at Pepperell, 44-38. Ben Whelchel and Kemp Edge led the Dragons (6-11) with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Jordan Barker led the Wildcats with 10 points. K.J. Rogers finished with eight points for Woodland (2-15).
