Lady Canes extend streak to nine

Cartersville volleyball extended its season-opening win streak to nine Tuesday, following a strong showing at Hillgrove High School.


The Lady Canes defeated the reigning Class 5A state champions, Pope, in their opener on Tuesday and followed with a straight-set victory over the host Hawks.


Cartersville started slowly against Pope (3-2), narrowly dropping the first set 24-26. The Lady Canes quickly regrouped, however, to take the second set 25-19 and sealed the win over the Greyhounds with a 15-9 victory in the final set.


Senior standout Jada Zimmerman led the offensive charge with eight kills, while Amara Ejieke and Holly Dufrene each added 8 of their own. Jacksonville State commit Riley Huff anchored the net with seven blocks, showcasing her defensive prowess. Emma Wall orchestrated the offense with 18 assists, supported by Aubree Barrett’s 11. On the defensive end, Coastal Carolina commit McKenzie Wilkie was a force, recording 24 digs.


Cartersville defeated Hillgrove 25-16 and 25-14. Zimmerman once again led the attack with 11 kills, followed by Huff and Dufrene with five apiece. Huff, Dufrene, and Blakely Morris each contributed three blocks, reinforcing the team's strong net presence. Wall added 12 assists, and Wilkie continued her defensive dominance with 16 digs.


The loss dropped Hillgrove to 2-5 on the season.


The Lady Canes (9-0) return to action next Tuesday when they visit Mount Paran for matches against Holy Innocents and Mount Paran.



ADAIRSVILLE DROPS TWO


The Lady Tigers lost two matches on Tuesday at Coosa High School.  


Adairsville fell in three sets to the host Eagles (28-26, 23-25, 11-15) and dropped a straight-set decision to Model (10-25 and 19-25).


Ella Steward had eight kills and two blocks in the loss to Coosa. Alexis Scott added five kills. Nadelyn Dodson provided 10 digs against Model.


The Lady Tigers host Cass and Pickens on Thursday.



LADY COLONELS FALL IN SEASON OPENER


Cass volleyball lost its season opener to Darlington in a match played at Pepperell High School. Darlington won in straight sets, 25-18 and 25-5, and improved to 8-0 on the season.


Cass (0-2) also lost to Pepperell in straight sets on Tuesday.



WOODLAND DROPS THREE-SET MATCH WITH PICKENS


The Lady Cats lost their home opening match with visiting Pickens on Tuesday, falling in all three sets. The Dragons won 25-13, 25-19, and 25-11 and improved to 4-2 on the season. Katie Clowers paced Woodland (0-2) with four service aces, five digs, two assists, and seven service receptions. Camilla Ferguson contributed six assists. Alex Williams led the front line with three kills. Aby Childs had one kill, five digs, and one service ace.
