Lady Canes qualify for the state playoffs with a win over Woodland; Wildcats blank Canes

The Cartersville Lady Canes upended visiting Woodland 2-1 Friday night at Weinman Stadium to earn the No. 4 seed from Region 7-AAAA in the upcoming GHSA state playoffs.

Following a scoreless first half, the visiting Lady Cats grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening minute of the second half. Sammie Espinoza scored the goal for Woodland off an assist from Liby Morgan.
Cartersville responded less than four minutes later with an equalizer by Mallory Nicklas off a corner.

However, the Lady Canes broke the deadlock in the 60th minute on a goal by Scout Hullander. Lexi Fennelly assisted on the go-ahead goal.
The Cartersville girls improved to 5-6 overall and finished 4-3 in region matches. The Lady Canes will begin preparations for the state playoffs on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. on their home pitch against Model.
Woodland falls to 4-8 overall and finished 3-4 in region action. The Lady Cats have four non-region matches remaining on the schedule, beginning at Gordon Central on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
WOODLAND BOYS 2, CARTERSVILLE 0
The Wildcats scored goals in each half Friday night at Cartersville’s Weinman Stadium to finish their region schedule with a 2-0 victory.
Aiden Carrillo found the net for Woodland in the 28th minute off an assist by Deiby Sanchez. That goal gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Connor Henderson added a final insurance goal for Woodland in the final minute assisted by goalkeeper Jaime Lozano.
Cartersville (3-7) finished the Region 7-AAAA slate with a 1-6 mark. The Hurricanes have four non-region matches remaining, beginning at home on Tuesday against Model at 7:30 p.m.
Woodland (3-10) also finished region play with a 1-6 record. The Wildcats play a non-region match at Gordon Central on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
