Lady Colonels, Colonels sweep Woodland


The Cass girls and boys basketball teams made it a clean sweep of region and cross-county rival Woodland Saturday afternoon. The Lady Colonels defeated the Lady Cats 65-37 and the Colonels downed the Wildcats, 77-50. Cass sophomore Claire Davis scored 32 points for the Lady Colonels in their victory. Teammate Ariana Hames followed with nine points. Haley Johnson, Justice Bennett, and Amaya Ford added five each for the Cass girls. Woodland led 14-13 after one quarter, but Cass took a 28-20 lead to the locker room at halftime and extended the lead to 49-29 through three quarters. Jordan Thompson led the Lady Cats with 10 points. Gracie Styles and Lauren Morris contributed eight each for Woodland. The Cass girls improved to 6-3 overall and evened their Region 7-AAAAA record at 3-3. The Lady Colonels host Class AAAAA 2nd-ranked Villa Rica Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in another region tilt before participating in the Gordon Lee Christmas Tournament Thursday through Saturday. Woodland (1-6, 1-4) will open play in the Rome Holiday Tournament Monday night at Berry College against Darlington.


Fast-starting Colonels run away from Woodland

The Cass boys basketball team grabbed a 28-6 lead after just one quarter Saturday afternoon on their way to a 27-point home and Region 7-AAAAA win over Woodland.

The Colonels, who got 15 of Zaylan Chaney’s team-high 22 points in the first half, led 46-24 at the intermission. The Cass lead was 59-36 through three quarters. Four other Colonels reached double-figure scoring. Jaquan Heard and C.J. Pipkin scored 14 each for Cass. Braxton Benham contributed 12. Jordan Ford followed with 10 and Andrew Glaze added five points.

Woodland’s DiAnthony Heathcock scored a game-high 23 points. Jaden Johnson posted 12. Jamison Lawrence and Jordan Barker added five and four points, respectively, for the Wildcats.

Woodland (1-6, 0-5) plays Darlington Monday night at 8:30 p.m. at Berry College to open the Rome Holiday Tournament.

Cass improved to 9-3 on the season and 5-1 in Region 7-AAAAA. The Colonels host Villa Rica Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in another important region matchup.
