Lady Colonels overcome sluggish start to win tourney opener
The Cass Lady Colonels overcame a sluggish start Tuesday morning with a strong defensive second half to win their eleventh straight game and their opening round game of the Adairsville Christmas Clash.
Cass led by only three points at halftime (21-18) after a poor shooting first half, but outscored Class 7A Parkview 29-10 in the second half for a 50-28 first round win.
The Lady Colonels, currently ranked 7th in Class 5A, did not have a player to reach double figure scoring although eight different players contributed. Miya Winston led the scoring with nine points while the trio of Haley Johnson, Claire Davis, and Kiana McDaniel followed with eight points each. Johnson added seven rebounds, seven assists, and seven steals to her scoring effort. Davis grabbed ten rebounds and Kiana McDaniel finished with four steals.
Amaya Ford and Keara McDaniel both scored six points. Keara McDaniel added four steals.
Justice Bennett and Tamira Feanny rounded out the Cass scoring sheet with three and two points, respectively.
Parkview (6-7) was led by Paulina Casanova with six points and Jaden Cooper with five, but neither scored in the second half.
Cass (12-1) advances to Wednesday’s semifinal round at 4 p.m. against region 7-5A rival Calhoun. The Yellow Jackets beat Morgan County in the first round Tuesday afternoon 49-33.
