Filiberto Duarte’s shot from 40 yards out with 11 minutes to play curved under the crossbar to lift CHS to a 1-0 win over Hiram in region play on Tuesday, March 19.
It was the sophomore defender’s first varsity goal.
“I was looking for [Canes forward] Jackson [Barkley] and he pulled over to the left wing, taking a defender and creating space,” said Duarte. “I’m left-footed, so I cut to my left and took it, hoping to put it in the frame. It happened to go where the keeper couldn’t reach it.”
Duarte had another shot on goal early in the game off a Yosvanni Pineda throw-in. Later in the half Pineda himself almost found the lower left corner off a free kick, but it was blocked by the keeper and smothered a step before Duarte could arrive for the rebound.
In the 23rd minute of the second half, Pineda began a beautiful run down the right side that ended with a cross in front of the Hiram net, but the goalie stopped Barkley’s shot. Another Canes shot two minutes later by Jose Rangel was stopped before Duarte’s late-game heroics.
“This gives us a boost of confidence,” said Duarte. “We played it a little different tonight and passed around the back a little more. That caused their midfield to move and we got them a little unorganized and that’s when we attacked.”
The Canes (3-9) face Cass Friday night in White.
