Local teams split volleyball season openers


The volleyball teams at Cartersville and Adairsville split matches Tuesday night, but Cass dropped a pair of contests as the 2020 season got underway for local teams. Cartersville split matches with Villa Rica and South Paulding. The Canes swept Villa Rica 25-8 and 25-23 before falling to South Paulding 25-17 and 25-14. Mia Nicklas had seven kills and three aces in the win over the Wildcats. Macey Vaughn contributed four aces and Lily Gochee added three. Ailee England finished with a team-high three kills for Cartersville in the loss to the Spartans. The Hurricanes (1-1) travel to Allatoona Thursday.

Adairsville volleyball also split two matches Tuesday. The Tigers opened the 2020 season with a 25-15, 25-22 loss to Chapel Hill, but bounced back to beat host Temple 25-11 and 26-24. Autumn Henderson led the Adairsville offense with four kills against Chapel Hill and five against Temple. She added seven blocks on the night. Hannah Hollingsworth and Richlyn Blair contributed six kills during the matches while senior libero Aaliyah Applin totaled 13 digs and four aces. Adairsville (1-1) returns to action Saturday when they host the Welcome to the Jungle tournament.

Cass volleyball fell in a pair of season-opening matches at home Tuesday to Murray County and Model. The Colonels forced a third set in the opener against Murray County by winning the second set 26-24, but lost the final set 15-5. The visiting Indians took the opening set 25-12. Model defeated Cass in straight sets, 25-19 and 25-16. Cass (0-2) travels to Rome on Thursday.
