Local tennis teams secure state playoff berths
The Cartersville boys tennis team finished as runner-up in the Region 7-5A Championship Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday at Dellinger Park.
The Canes began the tournament as the No. 3-seed and made their way to the region championship match with wins over Cass (5-0) and No. 2-seed Calhoun 3-1 on Tuesday.
Cartersville lost Wednesday to Blessed Trinity and will host a Class 5A State Tournament first round match as Region 7-5A’s No. 2-seed. The Canes opponent will be determined later this week.
In other boys region tournament action, Hiram edged Woodland 3-2 Tuesday before falling 4-0 to Blessed Trinity.
The first round of the Class 5A state playoffs must be completed by Thursday, April 21. Cartersville will host the No. 3-seed from Region 5-5A.
CARTERSVILLE GIRLS DEFEAT CASS FOR 3-SEED; ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS HAVE ALSO QUALIFIED FOR THE STATE PLAYOFFS
The Cartersville girls tennis team will enter the GHSA Class 5A State Tournament as the No. 3-seed from Region 7-5A. The Lady Canes defeated Cass in the region’s third place match Wednesday 3-0. As a result, the Lady Colonels will also enter the state playoffs with a road match as the No. 4-seed.
Cartersville lost to Blessed Trinity in the semifinals 3-1 while Cass lost to eventual Region 7-5A champion Calhoun 3-0.
In Tuesday’s first round, Cass defeated Hiram 4-1 and Blessed Trinity blanked the Woodland girls, 5-0.
The opening round of the GHSA Class 5A state tournament must be completed by Thursday, April 21. Cass will play at the Region 5-5A champion and Cartersville will travel to Region 5-5A’s runner-up. The opponents for both will be determined by the Region 5-5A playoffs later this week.
In Class AAA, the Adairsville girls clinched at state playoff berth the week before local spring break.
Adairsville — as a No. 4-seed — will begin the playoffs with a road match at the Region 8-AAA champion. That opponent will be determined this week.
