Soccer roundup: 5th-ranked Wildcats blank Cartersville in region opener, Lady Canes down Lady Cats

The Woodland Wildcats ranked No. 5 in Class 5A, won an intense region opener over visiting Cartersville on Friday night in heavy rains, 3-0.
Chris Sanchez gave Woodland an early 1-0 lead off an assist from Dieby Sanchez in the 14th minute. That lead would stand at the intermission.
In the second half, the scoring roles reversed for the Wildcats when Chris Sanchez fed Deiby Sanchez in the 47th minute for a 2-0 Woodland advantage.
Five minutes later, Chris Sanchez closed out the scoring with a header into the net on an assist from Hunter Limbaugh.
Armed with a 3-0 advantage, the Wildcats maintained their shutout over the final 28 minutes to remain undefeated on the season.
Woodland keeper, Miguel Pineda, had two saves behind the Wildcats' defense.
The loss dropped Cartersville to 2-7 on the season and 0-1 in Region 7-5A. The Canes play at Creekview on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and host Calhoun in a region match on Friday.
Woodland (7-0, 1-0) plays at Kennesaw Mountain on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and travels to top-ranked Dalton on Friday night.
CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 6, WOODLAND 1
The Lady Canes scored four goals in the first half on Friday night at Woodland and won the Region 7-5A opener for both teams, 6-1.
Hattie Williams and Annabelle Williams scored two goals for Cartersville. Mallory Nicklas and Lundyn Eubanks also scored for the Lady Canes.
Goalkeeper Helen Leaming and the Cartersville defense kept Woodland off the scoreboard until the final six minutes.
The Lady Cats (4-1, 0-1) play at East Paulding on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and will travel to Dalton on Friday for their next region match.
The Lady Canes (5-4, 1-0) travel to Creekview on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. start and will return to region action on Friday at home against Calhoun in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 10, RIDGELAND 0
The Lady Tigers needed only the first half on Friday night to dispose of their host Ridgeland Lady Panthers in Rossville, 10-0, by mercy rule.
Sam Gough and Ella Edwards earned hat tricks with three goals each while Lizzy LeMay finished the evening with four assists.
Alex Damer and Alivia Joslin finished with two goals. Gough and Carly Edwards were credited with one assist.
The Adairsville girls (7-2, 2-0) visit Ringgold on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. kickoff and will host Bremen on Thursday at 5 p.m.
ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 4, RIDGELAND 0
The Tigers won their Region 6-3A opener Friday night at Ridgeland, 4-0.
The loss dropped the Panthers to 5-6 on the season and 0-2 in region play.
Adairsville (2-3-2, 1-0) plays at Ringgold on Tuesday in a 7 p.m. kickoff and will host Bremen on Thursday.
COAHULLA CREEK 3, CASS GIRLS 0
The visiting Lady Colts won 3-0 at Cass on Thursday night in a non-region match.
Coahulla Creek improved to 6-4 with the victory.
Cass (3-5, 0-1 in Region 7-5A) hosts Bremen on Monday at 5:30 p.m. and returns to region play on Tuesday at Hiram in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
COAHULLA CREEK 1, CASS 0
The Colts scored the game’s only goal in the first half Thursday night at Cass in a non-region match.
Coahulla Creek improved to 6-3-1.
Cass (7-2-1, 1-0) hosts Bremen on Monday at 7:30 p.m. and returns to Region 7-5A play on Tuesday at Hiram.
