Soccer roundup: Cartersville teams blank Troup to open region play, Adairsville girls add region win


The Cartersville girls and boys soccer teams started Region 5-AAAA action on the right foot with a pair of 10-0 wins Tuesday night at Troup County.


The Woodland girls fell at Rome and the Cass boys lost on penalty kicks at East Paulding.



CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 10, TROUP 0


The Cartersville girls soccer team won their Region 5-AAAA opener Tuesday night at Troup County by shutting out the Tigers, 10-0.


Linet Chege, Kalyn Donegan, and Janet Zazueta each scored a pair of goals. Micah Vance, Kendyl Anderson, Devondria Johnson, and Trista Kelly added the other Lady Canes’ goals.


Abby Craig was selected Player of the Game for Cartersville after dishing out four assists. Devondria Johnson had two assists. Kendyl Anderson and Linet Chege contributed one assist each.


Trista Kelly and Micah Vance played goalkeeper for the Lady Canes in the absence of normal starter Britany Lewis (illness). Cartersville (6-1, 1-0) hosts Central-Carroll Friday night in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.



CARTERSVILLE BOYS 10, TROUP 0 The Hurricanes earned a 10-0 win in their Region 5-AAAA opener Tuesday night at Troup County. Brady Craig scored a hat-trick of three goals with one in the first half and two more early in the second half. Joel Zazueta followed with a pair of goals for the Canes. Joshua Morales, John Vargas, Ethan Eckert, Alex Rios, and Chase Clark also scored one goal apiece.


Alex Rios contributed three assists. Pedro Morales had two helpers. Giovanni Carrión, John Vargas, and Ed Pastor added one assist each. Cartersville (5-3, 1-0) hosts Central-Carroll Friday night at 7:30 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 5, COAHULLA CREEK 2

The Adairsville girls posted four goals in the second half to break open a game that was tied 1-1 at halftime as they defeated Coahulla Creek, 5-2.

Cat Wheeler scored the Lady Tigers first three goals to complete a hat trick. The first half goal was on a penalty kick following a handball in the game’s 14th minute. The next two came early in the second half. Lillie McBride assisted on Wheeler’s goal in the 47th minute and Ellie McBride assisted on the third goal in the 57th minute. Taylor Rhoades scored off a Wheeler assist in the 65th minute and Megan Hardin added the Lady Tigers’ final goal off a direct kick in the 75th minute.

Adairsville outshot the Lady Colts 24-7 in the Region 6-AAA win. The Lady Tigers (7-0-1, 3-0) travel to North Murray Tuesday, March 17. COAHULLA CREEK 11, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 1

Coahulla Creek, a AAA state finalist in 2019, took down Adairsville Tuesday at Tiger Stadium 11-1.

The Colts (7-1, 3-0 Region 6-AAA) jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Glewill Berrios scored off an assist from Edgar Rojas with five minutes left in the first half. The visitors dominated the second half en route to the mercy rule victory. Tigers' goalkeeper Tyrek Bryant made roughly a dozen saves.

Adairsville (2-6, 2-1) will return to action next Tuesday at North Murray.



ROME 3, WOODLAND GIRLS 1


The Woodland girls trailed 2-0 at halftime and eventually fell at Rome Tuesday night in Region 7-AAAAA action, 3-1. Grace Webb scored the lone Woodland goal with just over 36 minutes remaining.

Lady Cats’ goalkeeper made 18 saves. Woodland steps outside of region play Wednesday to host Trion at 5:30 p.m.




EAST PAULDING 5, CASS BOYS 4 (Penalty Kicks) The Cass boys fell at East Paulding Tuesday night on penalty kicks after the game remained tied 4-4 through regulation and both overtime periods. Alex Cabanas scored two goals for the Colonels. Kaleb Speights and Kevin Polo scored the other Cass goals. Omar Garcia was selected as the Player of the Game for Cass with three assists. Cabanas also had an assist. The Colonels (4-6, 1-3) find their backs to the wall in Region 7-AAAAA needing to win-out in order to qualify for the state playoffs.


Cass hosts Hiram Friday night at Cochran Stadium at 8 p.m.
