Softball roundup: Baker, Woodland blank Hiram
Woodland pitcher Lainey Baker tossed a one-hitter Thursday as the Lady Cats blanked Hiram, 8-0, to win their third straight region game. Meanwhile, the other local softball teams lost region games. The Woodland softball team won its third straight Region 7-AAAAA game Thursday night with an 8-0 blanking of visiting Hiram in five innings.
Lady Cats’ pitcher Lainey Baker tossed a complete-game, one-hitter in the shutout. She did not walk a batter and struck out 12 of the 16 batters she faced.
Woodland pounded out ten hits in the victory.
Morgan Cooper doubled, homered, and drove in two runs. Ansley Evans doubled and tripled while Jessica Ryan also finished with two hits. Michiah Hicks (2 RBI), Lainey Baker (RBI), Kailey Baker, and Peyton Dorn contributed one hit apiece for the Lady Cats.
The loss dropped the Hornets to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in region action.
Woodland (6-2, 4-1) will compete in a tournament at Twin Creeks Park and Adams Park Friday evening and Saturday.
BLESSED TRINITY 17, CARTERSVILLE 6
After splitting a region doubleheader at Cass Wednesday night, the Lady Canes lost 17-6 at Blessed Trinity.
Cartersville raced to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and led 4-2 in the third when the host Titans struck for seven runs and a 9-4 lead. Cartersville scored two more runs in the fourth to narrow the margin to 9-6, but Blessed Trinity scored eight times in the bottom of the fourth to put the game away.
AnnaKate McElhaney doubled and drove in one run for Cartersville. Amelia Elrod and Mattie Johnson also had a base hit and one RBI each. Maggie Pruitt and Mikey Lewis were credited with one RBI each.
McKinley Chada (2 IP, 5R, 4ER, 3H, 1BB), Ava Perkins (1 IP, 7R, 4ER, 3H, 3BB, 1K), and Kiley Arnold (1 IP, 5R, 0ER, 3H) shared the pitching duties Thursday for the Canes.
Blessed Trinity improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in Region 7-AAAAA.
Cartersville (2-9, 1-4) will participate Saturday in the Allatoona High School Buccaneer Bash.
LAFAYETTE 7, ADAIRSVILLE 0 The host Ramblers scored three runs in the second inning and four more runs in the fourth to defeat Adairsville Thursday evening 7-0 in Region 6-AAA action. Lafayette out hit Adairsville 13-1 in the contest five Ramblers collecting at least two hits each. Makayla Wade had the lone Tigers’ hit in the second inning.
Haynie Gilstrap (7 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 5K) tossed the one-hitter for Lafayette (3-6, 2-6). Taylor Rhoades (3.1 IP, 7R, 4ER, 9H, 0BB, 3K) and Chelsea Batea (2.2 IP, 0R, 4H, 2BB, 1K) split the pitching duties for Adairsville. The Lady Tigers (6-3, 2-3) will travel to Murray County Tuesday and host Ringgold next Thursday.
CALHOUN 11, CASS 0
Maggie McBrayer tossed a five inning, one-hitter Thursday evening as Calhoun blanked Cass 11-0. McBrayer walked two and struck out four as the Yellow Jackets remained unbeaten in Region 7-AAAAA.
Calhoun led 4-0 after two innings and added seven runs across the next two frames for their run total.
Kelly Young had the only Cass base hit.
Calhoun improved to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in region play.
Cass (7-4, 2-3) hosts Hiram in a region doubleheader next Tuesday.
