Thursday’s soccer roundup: Cass boys, Woodland girls, and Adairsville teams collect wins

CASS BOYS 3, WOODLAND 1


Woodland led 1-0 at the intermission but the Colonels responded with three second-half goals to win 3-1 and secure a home game when the GHSA Class 5A state playoffs begin April 12.


Mason Madrid scored the equalizer for Cass about five minutes into the second half evening the score at 1-1.


In the 55th minute, Camden Hillhouse gave the Colonels the lead. His goal was assisted by Madrid.


The final Cass goal came in the 68th minute. Kayden Pineda found the net off an assist from Christian Villela.


Cass (8-7, 4-1) finishes second in Region 7-5A behind first place Dalton. Woodland (6-4-1, 3-2) finishes third in the region.


The Colonels will host a first round state playoff game against the 3-seed from Region 8-5A. The Wildcats will open the state playoffs on the road at the 2-seed from Region 8-5A.


Cass has a non-region home game Friday against East Paulding to conclude regular season play.



WOODLAND GIRLS 8, CASS 3


The Lady Colonels opened the scoring Thursday night at Woodland, but the Lady Colonels carried a 2-1 advantage to the intermission.


The Cass goal came in the 17th minute and was followed by back-to-back goals by Woodland’s Carlie Forman. Libby Morgan assisted on the first Lady Cats’ goal in the 19th minute and Reagan Weightman assisted on the second goal a couple of minutes later.


The Lady Colonels tied the score 2-2 in the 42nd minute, but Woodland regained the lead two minutes later on a goal by Weightman assisted by Morgan.


In the 45th minute, Cass knotted the score again at 3-3 before the Lady Cats scored five, unanswered goals.


Brionna Carver scored her third goal of the game in the 55th minute. Weightman scored her second goal in the 58th minute. Forman netted her third goal in the 61st minute. Carver added a fourth goal in the 73rd minute and Libby Morgan scored Woodland’s eighth goal of the night with less than two minutes remaining.


The final five Woodland goals included assists from Morgan twice, Weightman twice, Forman, and goalkeeper Peyton Keller.


The Cass girls ended their season with a 2-13 record and 0-5 in Region 7-5A.


Woodland (3-7-1, 2-3) advances to the GHSA Class 5A state playoffs as Region 7-5A’s No. 4-seed. The Lady Cats will travel to Region 8-5A champ Loganville Tuesday, April 11.


ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 6, MT. ZION-CARROLL 0


The Lady Tigers led 4-0 at halftime on first half goals by Gabi Becerra, Emma Ridley, Jessica Hogue, and Lizzie LeMay.


Carly Edwards, Maddie Gossett, Addy Coker, and LeMay had first half assists.


LeMay added two more Adairsville goals in the second half. Alivia Joslin assisted in the 71st minute and Becerra had the helper on the Lady Tigers’ sixth goal in the 78th minute.


The Adairsville girls honored their two seniors — Anie McCormick and Addy Coker — in ceremonies on the night.


The loss dropped Mt. Zion-Carroll to 5-7 on the season.


Adairsville (10-5, 4-2) will be the 3-seed from Region 6-AAA in the GHSA state playoffs. The Lady Tigers will play at Douglass-Atlanta in the first round on April 11.


ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 6, MT. ZION-CARROLL 1


JJ Grimaldo scored a hat trick and had three assists to help lead the Tigers to a regular season-ending win Thursday night at home over the Mt. Zion-Carroll Eagles.


John Mark Shepard scored a pair of goals for Adairsville and Blade Benefield added a goal in the 6-1 victory


Adairsville led 2-1 at the intermission.


The Tigers finish the regular season with a 7-8 overall record after beginning the season 0-4.


The Adairsville boys will be the No. 4 seed from Region 6-AAA in the GHSA state playoffs. The Tigers open the first round at Sandy Creek on April 12 at 7 p.m.


ALLATOONA 4, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 0


In a non-region matchup Thursday night, the Cartersville boys dropped a 4-0 decision to the visiting Allatoona Buccaneers.


Allatoona improved to 8-5-3 on the season.


Cartersville (5-7-3) finished as the No. 4-seed from Region 7-5A and will open the GHSA state playoffs on April 12 at the Region 8-5A champion — likely Flowery Branch.


The Lady Canes (5-7-3) — Friday result not reported — finished as the No. 3-seed from Region 7-5A. The Cartersville girls will begin the GHSA state playoffs on April 11 at Jefferson.
