Thursday’s softball roundup: Cass finds a way late; Cartersville remains perfect in region play

Cass and Cartersville earned region wins on Thursday evening, while Woodland and Adairsville suffered setbacks.

CASS 5, VILLA RICA 4

The Lady Colonels pounded out 11 hits, and pitcher Abagail Nails struck out 13 on Thursday as Cass beat Villa Rica 5-4 in a key Region 7-5A game.

Nails worked all seven innings in the circle, allowing four runs (three earned) on one hit and five walks to collect the pitching victory.

Cass led 1-0 after one inning, 3-1 after four, and 4-3 through five innings. The Wildcats tied it in the sixth inning, but Cass pushed across a decisive run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Rilyn Caspari.

Shyia Woods (double, two sac flies, two RBI), Natalie Hughes, and Caspari (two RBI) each had two hits for the Colonels. Linsey Chubb (double, RBI), Kylie Gentry, Addy Bauder, Kharmyn Collum, and MJ McFarlane each added one hit.

Villa Rica fell to 12-9 overall and 8-4 in region play with their loss.

Cass (11-7, 8-5) hosts Calhoun for a non-region game on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and returns to region play on Tuesday at Allatoona at 5:30 p.m.

CARTERSVILLE 12, CEDARTOWN 0

The Lady Canes battled through four scoreless innings at Cedartown on Thursday evening before exploding for four runs in the fifth inning and eight in the sixth to close out a Region 7-5A win in six innings.

Presley Crabbe earned the pitching win with six scoreless innings in the circle. She scattered five hits, walked none, and struck out nine.

LaKiaya Banks and Izzy Tummins led the Cartersville offense with three hits each. Banks’ hits included a home run, a double, and four RBI. Tummins had a double and two RBI. Kennedy Crenshaw had two hits for the Lady Canes. Taryn Bradley (double, two RBI), Carder Brock (RBI), Sam Porter (RBI), Zoie Shiflett (RBI), and Emma Miller (RBI) each added one hit.

The loss dropped Cedartown to 8-11 overall and 4-6 in region play.

Cartersville (20-2, 13-0) hosts Villa Rica on Tuesday at 5:15 p.m.

ALLATOONA 11, WOODLAND 2

Allatoona scored nine runs in the bottom of the third inning Thursday night to pull away from Woodland and win 11-2 in five innings in a Region 7-5A game.

The Buccaneers’ third-inning rally included seven singles, two doubles, and two Woodland errors.

Charlotte Petersen had two hits and one RBI for the Lady Cats. Bella Kuykendall (double), Bailey Ryan, and Cat Sneed each added one hit for Woodland.

Evelyne Tucker (4 IP, 11R, 3ER, 12H, 0BB, 1K) took the pitching loss for the Wildcats.

Allatoona improved to 8-9 overall and 5-7 in region play.

Woodland (7-13, 3-9) hosts Hiram on Monday at 5:55 p.m.

CALHOUN 12, ADAIRSVILLE 7

The Lady Tigers outhit host Calhoun 12-10 on Thursday night, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a 12-7 loss to the Lady Jackets.

Adairsville trailed early, but scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a temporary 3-2 lead. Calhoun responded with a six-run bottom of the fourth and held on for a five-run win.

Paislee Rooks (3.2 IP, 5R, 4ER, 4H, 7BB) suffered the pitching loss for the Tigers. Chloe Hill (0.2 IP, 6R, 3ER, 5H, 1BB, 1K) and Heidi Rickett (1.2 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB, 1K) also worked in the circle for Adairsville.

Hill had three hits and one RBI to pace the Lady Tigers’ offense. Lillianne Gunter (double), Madison Brookshire (double), and Rooks each produced two hits. Sydney Satterfield (two RBI), Rickett (two RBI), and Lily Brookshire (RBI) each added one hit.

Calhoun improved to 7-10 overall and 4-6 in Region 7-4A.

Adairsville (15-8, 7-3) hosts Cedartown on Monday at 5 p.m. and returns to region play on Tuesday at Southeast Whitfield at 5:30 p.m.
