Tigers claw past Gilmer in a pitcher's duel, Woodland blasts Raiders

The Adairsville Tigers clawed past the visiting Gilmer Bobcats Wednesday evening to win a pitcher’s duel, 2-1, in Region 7-AAA action.


McCayden Hufstetler outdueled Cooper Cochran of Gilmer by tossing a complete-game two-hitter. He gave up one earned run, walked two, and struck out six to earn the pitching win.


Adairsville scored first in the bottom of the second inning. Gilmer tied the game in the top of the third, and the Tigers pushed across the deciding run in the fourth on a Bobcats’ defensive miscue.


Westin Barfield had two hits for the Tigers. Harrison Cole, Hudson Parr, Matthew Cook, Evan Hardin, and Hufstetler (RBI) contributed one hit each.


Gilmer (5-7, 1-3) will host Adairsville (10-4, 2-2) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The two teams will conclude the region three-game series on Friday at 5:30 p.m. back at Adairsville.



WOODLAND 14, SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD 0


Woodland starting pitcher Clayton Wilkes tossed a four-inning one-hitter on Wednesday, and the Wildcats blasted visiting Southeast Whitfield 14-0.


Woodland scored five runs in the second inning and posted nine in the fourth to close out a five-inning, run-rule victory.


The only base hit for the Raiders off Wilkes was a third-inning single with two outs. He issued four walks and struck out seven.


Preston Sorrells had three hits and three RBI for the Wildcats. Sammy Ray and Alfredo Romo (triple) each produced two hits and two RBI. Jonathan Ryan and Tommy Risner (double, sac fly) each had one hit and one RBI. Steven Tumlin added an RBI with a sacrifice fly.


Woodland (7-6, 1-3) and Southeast Whitfield (2-11, 1-3) will continue their series on Friday in Dalton with a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
