Top-ranked Canes stay unbeaten, blank Patriots for homecoming win

The Class 5A No. 1-ranked Cartersville Purple Hurricanes will carry an unblemished record into the second half of their season following a 49-0 homecoming win Friday night over the Heritage-Conyers Patriots.
The Canes scored on five of their first six possessions and led 35-0 at the intermission.
Quarterback Nate Russell tossed four touchdown passes in the win and was 8-for-11 for 157 yards through the air. The freshman found Morocco Wilkey for a 23-yard score with 9:38 remaining in the opening quarter; delivered a short screen pass to Ja’Mauri Brice that Brice took to the end zone from 63-yards away; connected with Collin Fletcher for a 17-yard touchdown with 8:44 left in the second quarter, and tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Romo Pace with 5:08 left in the first half.
The first quarter also included a 12-yard touchdown run by Malachi Jeffries after Heritage fumbled at their own 12-yard line.
Ryan Johnson converted the first five Canes’ extra point kicks.
With a continuous clock in the second half, Tayshaun Carter picked off a pass late in the third quarter and returned it for a pick-six and Baylon Long added a 47-yard touchdown run with 8:34 remaining in the fourth quarter for a 49-0 final. Osiel Nava booted the final extra points.
The loss drops the Patriots to 2-2 on the season.
Cartersville (5-0) has a bye week before hosting Calhoun September 30.
