Volleyball region playoffs roundup

All four local high school volleyball teams slipped into their respective region tournament losers’ brackets Thursday in playoff action. All four will return to action Saturday with an opportunity to play their way into the state playoffs. Woodland edged Cass in an opening round match at Blessed Trinity 25-22 and 25-23, but dropped a championship bracket semifinal to the host Titans, 25-8 and 25-11.

At Calhoun, Cartersville defeated Hiram in the opening round 25-19 and 25-21 before falling to the host Yellow Jackets, 25-14 and 25-19.

In the win over Hiram, Cartersville’s Ailee England had seven kills. Abby Allen totaled eight kills and four assists. Macey Vaughn contributed 16 assists while Mia Nicklas and Elizabeth Brown added seven digs each.

In the Canes’ loss to Calhoun, Lily Gochee had three kills. Vaughn finished with eight assists and Nicklas added ten digs. The Region 7-AAAAA tournament continues Saturday at Blessed Trinity. Cass and Cartersville will square off in a losers’ bracket semifinal and Woodland will face Hiram in the same round. The winners will advance to the state playoffs as either a 3- or 4-seed.

Adairsville won the middle set in their best of three first round tournament match Thursday at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe. The host Warriors took the first and third sets, however, to advance in the championship bracket of the Region 6-AAA tournament.

In a tightly contested match, LFO won the opening set 25-23 and Adairsville won Set 2 by the same 25-23 score. The Warriors won the deciding set, 25-12.

LFO advances to play Sonoraville in a championship bracket semifinal. Adairsville moves to the losers’ bracket against North Murray. The remainder of the Region 6-AAA tournament will be played at LaFayette Saturday.
