Weekend local hoops: Eagles win at Rockmart, Lady Tigers pick up a win at Rome

The Excel Christian Academy boys basketball team earned a hard-fought road victory on Saturday afternoon at Rockmart, 58-54.


The Eagels trailed 36-29 at the intermission, but erupted for a 20-6 advantage in the third quarter to take control of the game.


Mason McKinney led Excel with 19 points. Damir McBride scored 15. Aston Chappell and Mier Bell each added eight.


M.J. Berry paced the Yellow Jackets (0-5) with 15 points. A.D. Samples added 10.


Excel (7-3, 1-0 GAPPS 1-A, Region 1) hosts Oakwood Christian on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.




ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 37, ROME 21


The Lady Tigers took a 9-2 lead after the opening eight minutes and led at the end of each quarter en route to a 37-21 win on Saturday at Rome.


Adairsville led 17-13 at halftime and 24-17 at the end of the third quarter.


Savannah Viktora poured in 17 points for the Lady Tigers. Alivia Joslin scored nine, and Samantha Gough produced seven points for Adairsville.


Adesi Foster led Rome (2-3) with seven points.


Adairsville (2-6, 0-1 Region 7-AAA) visits Heritage-Catoosa on Tuesday at 6 p.m.




PAULDING COUNTY 81, CASS BOYS 61


The Colonels kept pace for three quarters on Friday night, but the host Patriots pulled away in the fourth quarter for an 81-61 non-region victory.


Jerron Wilson exploded for 42 points to lead Paulding County. Zion Ekwealor finished with 14 points and Marcus Hill added 10.


Jahill Abdulla-Kortey scored 15 points for Cass. Derrick Sams contributed 12 points and Isaiah Moreno added 10 for the Colonels.


Cass (0-5) hosts Woodland on Tuesday.




PAULDING COUNTY 58, CASS GIRLS 48


The Lady Colonels lost a non-region game at Paulding County on Friday, 58-48.


Paulding County improved to 5-2 on the season. 


Cass (0-6) hosts Woodland on Tuesday at 6 p.m.



GILMER 65, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 26


The Adairsville girls lost their region opener at home on Friday, falling to the Gilmer Bobcats 65-26.


Jace Sanderson scored 24 points to lead Gilmer (3-5, 1-0).


Savannah Viktora and Lily Roberts scored nine and six points, respectively, for the Lady Tigers.




GILMER 61, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 47


The Tigers dropped their region opener to visiting Gilmer Friday night, 61-47.


Gilmer improved to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in Region 7-AAA.


Adairsville (0-5, 0-1) plays at Heritage-Catoosa on Tuesday.
