Woodland bats silenced in opening round loss at Class 5A Elite Eight Tournament
Woodland softball lost its opening game of the 2021 Class 5A Elite Eight Tournament in Columbus Thursday night, falling to Starr’s Mill 4-0.
Starr’s Mill pitcher Lilli Backes tossed a complete-game, no-hitter to shut down the Woodland offense. She struck out 17 and walked only two Lady Cats.
Playing as the home team in the first round of the double-elimination tournament, Starr’s Mill broke open a scoreless game with a three run third inning and added the game’s only other run in the bottom of the fourth.
Lainey Baker pitched well for Woodland but suffered the pitching defeat. Baker allowed three earned runs on six hits and four walks. The senior hurler fanned nine.
Woodland (17-14-2) falls into the elimination bracket and will face region foe Calhoun Friday at 3 p.m. Calhoun fell to Loganville Thursday night, 12-2.
The tournament continues through Saturday.
Following their opening round loss, Woodland needs six straight wins Friday and Saturday to capture the state title.
