Woodland girls, boys run to third place finishes at Wire2Wire Invitational


The Woodland girls and boys cross country teams both finished third Saturday in the Wire2Wire Cross Country Invitational hosted by Cartersville High School at Dellinger Park.


The Cartersville girls finished ninth in the 14-team competition that was won by Sequoyah. The girls race included 101 participants.


Chamblee won the 17-team boys championship followed by North Forsyth. Cartersville placed seventh and Cass was tenth. The boys field included 121 runners.


Olivia Berry (17th, 21:20) led the Lady Cats who bunched all five scoring runners between 17th and 23rd place. Emma Segars (21:26), Miranda Pelow (21:45), Danielle Thayer (21:52), and Abby George (22:11) followed Berry.


Meredith Gaines (41st, 23:55) led the Lady Canes. She was followed by teammates Vivi Vest (24:07), Samantha Herrera (24:23), Julianne Latham (25:27), and Milena Bihm (26:06).


Cartersville’s Malachi Vosburgh (2nd, 16:24) and Woodland’s Tyler Jones (4th, 16:27) led all local harriers. Vosburgh finished less than one second behind Chamblee’s William Elder for the individual title.


Other Woodland scoring runs: Drew Thayer (13th, 17:20), Juan Mendoza (26th, 17:58), Landon McSwain (27th, 17:59), and Rowan Lee (18:17).


Other Cartersville scoring runs: Barrett Stepp (37th, 18:18), Hayden Mitchell (18:31), Paul Hyman (18:58), and Micah Sanders (19:32).


Critton Gearhart (31st, 18:09) had the best Cass finish followed by Leonardo Galeana (18:39), Adam Pierce (19:04), Jake Wright (19:22), and Sawyer Foy (19:48).


Woodland and Cartersville will compete in the Wingfoot Cross Country Classic next Saturday at Sam Smith Park.


Next on the Cass schedule is the Rangers Cross Country Invitational in Cumming on October 1.
