Woodland reaches Class 5A state championship match; Adairsville alive in Class 3A consolations
The Woodland wrestling team won again Friday night at the GHSA Class AAAAA State Duals Championship in Macon to advance to the state title match against Veterans Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats have one-sided wins in this year’s tournament over Miller Grove, Walnut Grove, and Ola to reach the championship match. Veterans has reached the state championship match with wins over Starr’s Mill (74-6), Union Grove (50-22), and Buford (37-25). The Cartersville wrestling team finished seventh in Class AAAA by going 2-2 in matches at the Macon Centreplex. Cartersville defeated Cairo in the first round before falling to Woodward Academy in the state quarterfinals. The Canes beat Flowery Branch Friday in their first consolation match 41-33, but fell to Northwest Whitfield, 50-27. In Class AAA, Adairsville remains alive in the consolation rounds with a chance to finish as high as third place. The Tigers beat Pierce County in the first round Thursday, but lost to Jackson County to be sent to the consolation bracket. Friday, Adairsville defeated Brantley County 72-12 and Pike County 57-21 to reach the consolation semifinals. The Tigers will wrestle Jefferson next and can finish no worse than a tie for fifth at the state tournament.
