Woodland reaches state semifinals; Adairsville, Cartersville fall in quarterfinals

The Woodland wrestling team remains unbeaten and heads into Friday night’s GHSA Class AAAAA semifinals of the 2020 State Duals Championship as the team to beat.
Top-seeded Woodland trounced Miller Grove 81-0 and Walnut Grove 70-12 in the first two rounds Thursday at the Macon Centreplex.
The Wildcats will face Ola in the semifinals Friday night at 6 p.m. Ola just edged Harris County in the state quarterfinals Thursday, 37-32, to reach the matchup with Woodland.
The other Class AAAAA semifinal will feature Buford and Veterans. Those two squads will also square off at 6 p.m. Friday night.
Cartersville and Adairsville won opening round matches in their respective classifications.
In Class AAAA, Cartersville beat Cairo 59-21 while Adairsville toppled Pierce County in Class AAA, 51-24.
The Canes and Tigers both fell in their quarterfinal matches, however. Cartersville lost to Woodward Academy 45-30 and Adairsville fell 51-24 to Jackson County.
Wrestlebacks continue throughout the day Friday as teams compete for as high as a third place finish.
Adairsville faces Brantley County Friday morning in the consolation rounds. Cartersville’s first consolation round opponent is the survivor of a match between Columbus and Flowery Branch.
