Woodland rolls past North Springs, 35-10

Woodland built a big first-half lead and shut out North Springs over the final two quarters Friday night, as the Wildcats defeated the Spartans 35-10 at Wildcats Stadium.
The victory improved Woodland to 2-1 on the season, while North Springs dropped to 1-2.
Woodland struck first with 5:51 remaining in the opening quarter when Hayden Collins scored on a 14-yard touchdown run. Chad Waller added the extra point to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.
Woodland extended its advantage to 14-0 just under four minutes later when Sam Ray connected with Solomon James on a 55-yard touchdown pass with 1:55 remaining in the quarter.
North Springs answered quickly. Zaire Sykes broke loose for a 78-yard touchdown run with 59 seconds left in the opening period. The extra point cut Woodland's lead to 14-7.
The Wildcats added to their lead midway through the second quarter. With 8:45 remaining, Ray threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Clayton McArdle, putting Woodland ahead 21-7.
North Springs responded with a 45-yard field goal with 4:43 remaining in the half, making the score 21-10.
Woodland then closed the half with two touchdowns in the final two minutes.
James scored on a 7-yard touchdown run with 1:49 remaining, followed by the extra point to make it 28-10.
Just 54 seconds later, Ray threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Mann. Waller's extra point gave Woodland a 35-10 advantage heading into halftime.
Neither team scored in the second half, allowing the Wildcats to preserve the 25-point victory.
North Springs, now 1-2, will return home Friday when the Spartans welcome Kennesaw Mountain to Atlanta.
Woodland head coach Andy Scott shared his thoughts following the Wildcats' victory.
"I'm really excited to see our kids have some success. I thought we played really well in all three phases of the game last night. Offensively, many kids produced in the run and pass game. We made some really good things happen on special teams, including a recovery on their onside kick. Defensively, we withstood a 20-play drive in the third quarter and stood firm on fourth down to not let him score."
Woodland enters a bye week before returning to action Sept. 18 at Northwest Whitfield.
"Heading into the bye week, we're looking forward to taking some time off and getting our kids healthy. Along with that, we're preparing for a really good Northwest Whitfield team and region play coming up," Scott concluded.
