Woodland soccer teams top Bulldogs

The Woodland girls soccer team trailed visiting Cedartown 2-1 late in the first half Monday night, but a pair of Libby Morgan goals in the final 1:23 of the half put the Lady Cats ahead 3-2 at the intermission on their way to an eventual 5-2 non-region win.


Ansley Burns opened the scoring for Woodland in the 24th minute off an assist from #5 to give the Lady Cats a 1-0 advantage. 


Cedartown answered just over two minutes later to equalize at 1-1 and then went ahead 2-1 in the 35th minute.


Morgan’s goals at the end of the half came in the 39th and 40th minutes with assists credited to Maddie Weightman and Reagan Weightman.


Up 3-2 at the break, Woodland started quickly in the second half.


Burns took a pass from Maddie Weightman in the 44th minute and finished it to put the Lady Cats up 4-2. In the 56th minute, Burns completed her hat trick with a goal off a feed from Morgan and a 5-2 lead. 


The final 24 minutes went scoreless.


The loss leaves Cedartown with a 6-8 season record.


Woodland (8-2, 2-2 Region 7-5A) plays a final region match at Hiram on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

The Woodland boys soccer team won a tight, non-region tussle with visiting Cedartown on Monday night, 3-2.


The Wildcats led 2-0 in the first half before Cedartown narrowed the margin to 2-1 at the intermission.


Chris Sanchez scored in the 9th minute for Woodland off an assist from Juan Pineda. He added a second goal midway through the half off a Marvin Morales serve.


The second half remained scoreless until the 68th minute when Sanchez finished off his hat trick with an assist from Joel Alberto. The insurance goal gave the Wildcats a  3-1 advantage.


Cedartown (9-5) scored later in the second half but the Bulldogs were denied an equalizer.


Miguel Pineda had five saves in goal for the Wildcats.


Woodland (8-4, 1-3 Region 7-5A) travels to Hiram on Thursday for their final region match at 7:30 p.m.
