Woodland tops McEachern; Cass picks up first win



The Woodland Wildcats won their third game of the season Thursday night, defeating the McEachern Indians 4-3. Meanwhile, the Cass Colonels won for the first time this season collecting a 6-2 victory over Armuchee at LakePoint. Also at LakePoint, Adairsville dropped a 5-3 decision to Coosa.




WOODLAND 4, McEACHERN 3


The Wildcats collected a 4-3 win over Class 7A McEachern Thursday in non-region action.


The two teams matched single runs in the fourth inning before Woodland took a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth. McEachern answered with a pair of runs in the fifth but the Wildcats held on across the final two frames for the victory.


Both teams finished with five hits.


Jakiyon Porter had two hits for the Wildcats. Julian Wright contributed a hit and one RBI with a sacrifice fly. Jacob Gravett doubled. Chase Carson added a hit and Jackson Rutledge drove in one run for Woodland.


Ayden Ray (4 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 4K) picked up the pitching win as the Woodland starter. Coby Barrett (3 IP, 2R, 0ER, 3H, 2BB) earned a save by retiring the final nine outs.


The loss dropped McEachern to 3-4 on the season.


Woodland (3-1) plays a doubleheader at Marietta Saturday at 2 p.m.




CASS 6, ARMUCHEE 2


Carson Hill earned a pitching victory on the mound and had two hits including one RBI to help lead the Colonels to their first win of the 2022 season at home Thursday night over Armuchee, 6-2.


Cass took a 3-0 lead through three innings and added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Armuchee’s two runs came in the top of the seventh.


Hill went four innings in his pitching start allowing no runs on one hit with no walks. He struck out six. Connor Jenkins (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 3BB, 1K), Devan Hutchinson (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 1BB, 1K), and Aidan Larkin (1 IP, 2ER, 2H, 1BB, 1K) pitched in relief for the Colonels.


Larkin (RBI), Jesiel Moctezuma, Cayden Roberts (RBI), Hayden Cole (double), and Bentley Markley finished with one hit each for Cass.


The loss drops Armuchee to 1-3 on the season.


Cass (1-4) hosts Heritage-Rockdale Friday at 5:55 p.m.



COOSA 5, ADAIRSVILLE 3


The Adairsville Tigers dropped a 5-3 decision to Coosa Thursday night in a game played at LakePoint in Emerson. The Tigers out hit the Eagles seven to four in the loss.


Coosa built a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth and added an insurance run in the seventh inning.


Adairsville posted two runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth inning.


Evan Sanders (4.2 IP, 4R, 2ER, 4H, 4BB, 6K) was tagged with the pitching loss. Jack Nelson (2.1 IP, 1R, 0ER, 0H, 0BB, 6K) pitched in relief for the Tigers.


Jack Whitley had two hits including a triple and one RBI for Adairsville. Sanders contributed a double and one RBI. Brenden Carroll finished with a hit and one RBI. P.J. Weeks, Tyler Driggers, and Peyton Bowen had the other Adairsville base hits.


Coosa improved to 2-2 on the season with their win.


Adairsville (1-2) hosts a doubleheader with Armuchee Saturday starting at 12 noon.
