Woodland wins regular season series with Cass; Adairsville, Cartersville fall to region leaders

Woodland pitcher Lainey Baker tossed a complete-game, four-hit shutout Thursday as the Lady Cats blanked Cass 7-0.

Woodland softball continued to keep pace with region-leading Calhoun and won the rubber game of the three-game regular season series with Cass Thursday night on the Colonels’ field, 7-0.

Lady Cats’ pitcher Lainey Baker was terrific again in the circle. She tossed a complete-game, four-hitter for the shutout. Baker fanned nine, walked only one in the victory. At the plate, she added two hits and one RBI.

Ansley Evans finished with two hits and two RBIs for Woodland. Hannah Miller also had two hits and one RBI. Morgan Cooper belted a fifth inning solo home run that made the score 3-0 at the time. Michiah Hicks (RBI), Kailey Baker, Jessica Ryan, Dylynn Motes (sac fly, RBI), and Cassie Jones tossed in one hit apiece in the 12-hit attack. Rachael Lee (7 IP, 7R, 4ER, 12H, 4BB, 2K) suffered the complete-game pitching loss for the Lady Colonels. She also contributed a triple on offense. Haylee Dishmon, Kendyl Hardin, and Eryn Lee had the other Cass base hits.

Woodland (11-4, 7-1) and Cass (9-5, 5-4) will compete with Cartersville and Adairsville for the Bartow County Championship Tournament Saturday. Games begin at Cartersville at 9 a.m.


Cartersville sophomore pitcher McKinley Chada kept the Lady Canes close at Calhoun Thursday evening, but the region-leading Yellow Jackets pulled away late for a 4-1 victory.

Chada (6 IP, 4R, 2ER, 7H, 4BB, 2K) limited Calhoun to only two earned runs and struck out two in six innings of work but was saddled with the loss.

Maggie McBrayer earned the pitching win for Calhoun. She fanned seven while scattering three hits and two walks.

Calhoun (7-6, 6-0) broke open a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs to take a 3-1 lead.

Lyndi Rae Davis — who finished with three hits including two doubles and two RBIs — added an insurance run with a solo homer in the fifth. Mikey Lewis, AnnaKate McElhaney, and Kiley Arnold had one hit apiece for the Hurricanes.

Cartersville (3-14, 1-7) will host the Bartow County Championship Tournament Saturday. The Lady Canes will play Cass in the opener at 9 a.m.


Ringgold remained atop the Region 6-AAA softball standings Thursday night with a 10-3 win at Adairsville.

Ringgold built a 6-1 lead through the first four innings and added on four more runs in the last two frames to secure the win.

Taylor Layne (7 IP, 3R, 2ER, 8H, 3BB, 1K) was the winning pitcher for the visiting Tigers.

Taylor Rhoades (3.2 IP, 6R, 3ER, 6H, 1K) and Victoria O’Neal (3.1 IP, 4R, 3ER, 7H, 1K) split the pitching duties for Adairsville.

Caroline Hemphill led Ringgold’s offense with two doubles, a home run, and four RBIs. Four other Ringgold hitters added two hits each.

O’Neal had three hits for Adairsville including a double and one RBI. Chloe Souders had two hits. Sadye Johnson (RBI), Makayla Wade, and Megan Gregory added one hit each.

Adairsville (7-4, 3-4) steps out of region action Saturday and will take on Woodland at 11 a.m. in the semfinals of the Bartow County Championship Tournament played at Cartersville.
