With top runner Malachi Vosburgh (48th, 16:00) competing in Saturday’s Championship race, the remainder of the Cartersville boys cross country team placed tenth of 26 teams in the Class 5A-7A Division at the Alexander Invitational in Fairburn. The top five scoring runs for the Canes included: Hayden Mitchell (18th, 17:18), Daniel Pina (57th, 18:05), Kaleb Lanier (69th, 18:20), Micah Sanders (78th, 18:32), Eduardo Hernandez (83rd, 18:37) Vosburgh’s Championship race included 335 runners. The Class 5A-7A Division had 227 participants. The Lady Canes finished 16th of 20 teams in the Class 5A-7A Division that had 169 competitors. Top finishes for Cartersville included: Meredith Gaines (71st, 23:29), Samantha Herrera (86th, 23:48), Vivi Vest (112th, 24:59), Julianne Latham (120th, 25:27), Rileigh Worthan (130th, 26:05) The next scheduled race for the Cartersville teams will be the Fast Break Challenge in Ringgold October 18. CASS COMPETES AT RANGERS INVITATIONAL The Cass boys cross country team ran to a runner-up finish this past Saturday at the Rangers Invitational in Cumming. The boys competition included nine teams and 106 runners. Top runners for the Colonels were Adam Pierce (7th, 18:56), Critton Gearhart (9th, 19:03), Leonardo Galeana (10th, 19:05), Jake Wright (20th, 19:43), Adam Brush (22nd, 19:48). The Cass girls did not field a scoring roster. Irelynn Wilmot (57th, 33:22) and Melinda McKinnon (66th, 39:56) ran for Cass. The next event for the Colonels will be the Pickens and Grinnin’ Invitational October 14. TIGERS 4TH AT RAMBLER INVITE The Adairsville boys cross country team placed fourth of nine teams Thursday, September 29 at the LaFayette Rambler Invitational. The race included 65 competitors with Bremen winning the team competition. Eli Pearson (16th, 18:57), Griffin Bozeman (17th, 19:00), Michael Spinks (29th, 19:39), Dutch Hernandez (30th, 19:40), and Fletcher Silvers (31st, 19:51) were the scoring runners for the Tigers. The Adairsville girls did not field a full scoring roster. Callie Viktora (12th, 23:59) and Caroline OKelley (16th, 24:42) ran for the Lady Tigers. Up next for Adairsville is the Rockmart Invitational Tuesday and the Grove Level Stampede in Dalton Thursday.

Woodland softball split a pair of non-region games Saturday. The Lady Cats beat the Lanier Longhorns 6-4 but lost to the Collins Hill Eagles, 5-2. In the win over Lanier, Jordan Hammonds had four hits and Mackenzie Araya had three hits with two RBIs to lead the Woodland attack. Peyton Dorn (2 RBIs), Kamryn Smith (RBI), Cambrie Carrington (double, RBI), and Elizabeth Hartsfield (double) each finished with two hits. Alana Carnes added one hit for the Wildcats. Haley Collum was the winning pitcher for Woodland with a seven inning complete game. The freshman pitcher scattered eight hits and three walks while fanning seven. The Lady Cats led 2-0 early against Collins Hill, but the Eagles tied the game in the third inning and scored three times in the fifth to post their win. Ashlyn Dowdy (4.2 IP, 5ER, 9H, 0BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for Woodland. Dorn (2.1 IP, 0R, 3H, 0BB) pitched in relief. Carrington and Dorn had two hits each for the Lady Cats’ offense. Araya (RBI), Hartsfield (RBI), and Smith added one hit each. Woodland (12-14, 6-6 Region 7-5A) plays at region-leading Cartersville Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. and travels to Dalton Thursday for another 5:55 p.m. start.

Each month, local high schools are provided the opportunity to name an Elite Athlete of the Month from their varsity programs and present the information on their honoree through Bartow Sports Zone and on 100.3FM and AM1450, WBHF in Cartersville. The Adairsville High School Elite Athlete of the Month is Griffin Bozeman. A sophomore member of the Tigers’ cross country and track and field teams, Bozeman is the son of Joseph and Kimberly Janssen. “After qualifying for the state championship race last year as a freshman, Griffin has continued to apply himself in each workout to improve on what he has already accomplished,” said Adairsville cross country coach John Ford. Bozeman recently made the top ten performers list for all Bartow County runners in his season opening race and has consistently improved his race times. A member of the Adairsville magnet program, he has a 4.0 grade point average taking honors and advanced placement courses. He plans to attend college, major in engineering, and continue his cross country career. Cambrie Carrington is the Elite Athlete of the Month at Woodland High School. The daughter of Kristin Matthews and Ronnie Carrington, she is the starting shortstop of the Lady Cats softball team. At this point in the season, the senior has a .367 batting average and a .980 fielding percentage. “Cambrie is a bright young lady whose personality draws players to her,” said Woodland softball coach Todd Eubanks. “She is the only senior on a very young team and has provided the leadership we’ve needed. Our younger players follow her example both on and off the field.” Carrington has a 3.7 grade point average and plans to attend a four year college program majoring in sports management. The Elite Athlete of the Month representing Cartersville High School is Lily Gochee. A senior co-captain on the Lady Canes’ volleyball team, Gochee is the daughter of Corey and LeAnne Gochee. The team’s setter, Gochee achieved a career milestone this season. “Lily has grown so much in her role as co-captain,” said Cartersville volleyball coach Alicen Pearson. “She encourages and motivates her teammates, but also pushes them to their highest potential. Earlier this season, Lily accomplished her 1,000th career assist and she continues to contribute to our team’s success by adjusting her game as needed. She has the discipline and drive to accomplish any goal she sets. I look forward to watching her do great things in the future.” A member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, and Mu Alpha Theta, Gochee plans to attend Ole Miss and double major in Psychology. Alexis Woods is the Cass High School Elite Athlete of the Month. A senior on the Lady Colonels’ softball team, Woods plays third base and pitches. She also hits at the top of the Cass order carrying a .412 average at the plate. Also a threat on the base paths with her speed, she has been a perfect 10-for-10 in stolen base attempts. “Alexis is a competitor,” said Cass softball coach Taylor Washington. “She is willing to play wherever her team needs her. Her efforts always put her teammates in their best position to be successful.” Woods has a 3.7 grade point average and has committed to continue her academic and softball career at Tennessee State University. Adairsville junior quarterback Jonathan Gough passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Tigers spoiled homecoming for the LaFayette Ramblers Friday night, 49-7. After Adairsville built an early 14-0 lead, Gough scored on touchdown runs of nine yards and 24 yards in the second quarter to build a 28-0 Tigers’ lead. Just before the intermission, Gough connected with Tre Winters for a 40-yard touchdown pass that put Adairsville up 35-0 at the intermission. Ethan Blome opened the Tigers’ scoring with an eight-yard touchdown run on a fourth and goal play with just under two minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Cooper Souders made the first of his seven PAT kicks to put the Tigers up 7-0. The scoring play was set up by a 30-yard punt return by Chris Roper to the Ramblers’ 18-yard line. On Adairsville’s next possession, Gough raced 40 yards on a keeper that set up a 24-yard touchdown run by Roper. The Tigers’ second scoring drive covered 68 yards in just three plays. Roper picked off a LaFayette pass to stop the Ramblers initial drive of the third quarter. The turnover was turned into more Adairsville points when Gough later connected with Chase Hilburn for a 16-yard score with 4:16 remaining in the period. In a continuously running clock fourth quarter, Kolt McCord sprinted to a 67-yard touchdown run that gave the Tigers a 49-0 lead and LaFayette’s Sam Hall closed out the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run for the Ramblers. Jason Brown made the PAT kick with 4:30 remaining in the game. The loss dropped LaFayette to 1-5 on the season and 0-3 in Region 6-AAA. The win by the Tigers keeps them tied with Coahulla Creek atop the region standings. Adairsville (5-1, 3-0) travels to Rossville next Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff with the Ridgeland Panthers.

Cartersville softball closed out Dalton Thursday night on the road with a 10-run fifth inning as the Lady Canes won 14-3. A tight game through four innings, Cartersville exploded for eight hits and took advantage of a pair of Dalton errors in the top of the fifth inning. Kennedy Stevens (2.1 IP, 0R, 0H, 2BB, 3K) picked up the Cartersville pitching win in relief of starter Ava Perkins (2.2 IP, 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 2K). The Lady Canes totaled 13 hits. Jordan Bishop had four hits including a double and one RBI. Elizabeth Nelson was next with three hits and one RBI. Mikey Lewis (home run, 3 RBIs), Kiley Arnold, and Perkins (home run, four RBIs) produced a pair of hits each. Layne Callan added one RBI. The loss dropped Dalton to 5-12 overall and 3-8 in region play. Cartersville (13-8-1, 11-1) has Region 7-5A games at home Tuesday and Thursday against Woodland and Cass. Both matchups are scheduled for 5:55 p.m. first pitch. CALHOUN 5, CASS 0 The Lady Colonels lost their third straight region game and dropped their eighth game in their last nine starts Thursday night at Calhoun. Cass pitcher, Emma Gibson, gave up eight hits and four walks but only three earned runs in the loss. The Colonels’ offense was limited, however, to only three hits and failed to score. Athens Hudson tossed a complete game for the Lady Jackets (19-6, 10-2) and struck out five. Ansley Hight, Alexis Woods, and Haylee Dishmon had the three Cass base hits. Cass (8-17. 5-7) hosts Hiram Tuesday before traveling cross-town to play Cartersville Thursday. Both games are 5:55 p.m. starts.

Freshman quarterback Brodie McWhorter threw for one touchdown and ran for two more as Cass rolled to a 42-0 halftime lead and went on win at Woodland Thursday night, 49-12. McWhorter connected with Devin Henderson for a 7-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter then had touchdown runs of 11-yards and one-yard in the second quarter as the Colonels took advantage of dominant field position throughout the first half. Those touchdowns — the third, fourth, and fifth of the night for Cass — were short drive of 25-yards, 32-yards, and 35-yards. Sacovie White started the Cass scoring barrage by returning the game’s opening kickoff 85-yards for a touchdown. The first of Saul Viella’s seven PAT kicks on the night gave the Colonels a 7-0 lead after just 14 seconds. Mac Nelson capped a five-play, 57-yard drive on the next Cass possession with a 27-yard touchdown run. That gave the Colonels a 14-0 lead with 7:15 remaining in the first quarter. The Colonels’ final touchdown of the first half was the first of two defensive scores by Kevin Henderson. His 41-yard scoop-and-score of a Woodland fumble with 3:55 remaining in the second quarter gave Cass a 42-0 lead at halftime. With a continuous clock in place for the second half, Woodland began a productive drive. It was stopped, however, when a Wildcats’ pass was picked off by Kevin Henderson and returned 80 yards to the final Cass score of the night. The pick-six put Cass up 49-0 with just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter. Woodland added two scores in the final period. Isaiah Livsey capped a six-play, 80-yard drive with a one yard touchdown run to make the score 49-6. Later on the final play of the game, Woodland quarterback Brelace Williams found Jaeden Smith streaking down the sideline for a 32-yard touchdown pass. The scoring play made the final, 49-12. Woodland (1-5, 0-1) travels to Dalton next Friday night. Top-ranked Cartersville committed five turnovers Thursday night at Weinman Stadium and dropped a 50-48 triple overtime decision to Region 7-5A rival Calhoun. Four of the Canes’ turnovers took place in the first half as Calhoun built a 28-7 lead. After Cartersville fumbled the opening kickoff and later gave the Yellow Jackets a short field with an interception, Calhoun quarterback Trey Townsend scored on a 1-yard keeper. The PAT kick by Carlos Lopez gave the visitors a 7-0 lead with 7:40 remaining in the first quarter. Malachi Jefferies broke loose with a 48-yard jaunt to tie the game moments later. Ryan Johnson’s PAT kick tied the score 7-7 with 3:52 left in the first period. Calhoun responded with an 85-yard drive to go up 14-7. Townsend capped the drive with a 1-yard sneak with 11:37 remaining in the second quarter. Cartersville fumbled on its next possession and the Yellow Jackets turned the third Canes’ miscue into more points. Calhoun running back Caden Williams finished off a 30-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge to put the Jackets up 21-7 with 9:52 left in the first half. The fourth Canes’ turnover of the half led to more Calhoun points. Makadan Griffin picked off a Cartersville pass to set up the score. Townsend connected with Hunter White for a 42-yard strike and Calhoun led 28-7 with 8:48 remaining in the second quarter. The Hurricanes drove 42 yards to cut the Calhoun lead to 28-14. Jeffries capped the drive with a 21-yard scamper with 5:07 remaining in the half. Cartersville’s had a third quarter scoring opportunity thwarted early in the period. After recovering a sack fumble at the Calhoun 13-yard line, another Cartersville pass was picked off in the end zone by the Yellow Jackets’ Cam Curtis. It was the fifth Canes’ turnover of the night. The Canes rally to send the game into overtime began in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter. A 51-yard drive included a long run by Jeffries to the red zone. He then finished off the drive with a 4-yard run with 11:15 left in regulation time making the score 28-21. Following possession exchanges and a Calhoun punt, the Canes started at the Calhoun 48-yard line. Cartersville quarterback Paul Gamble tossed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Collin Fletcher to knot the score at 28-28 with 5:06 remaining in the fourth quarter. With their next possession, the Canes moved the ball close enough to attempt a Johnson 47-yard field goal. It missed wide right, however, sending the game into overtime. Cartersville won the toss in overtime and chose to go on defense first. Calhoun scored on its first play. Williams’ 15-yard touchdown run put Calhoun up 35-28. Cartersville answered with a touchdown pass from Gamble to Ahmari Thomas on a 2nd-and-20 play. Johnson’s PAT sent the game to a second overtime tied 35-35. This time the Hurricanes went up 42-35 with a touchdown pass, but Calhoun responded with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Townsend to Emaree Winston to force a third overtime tied 42-42. The Cartersville touchdown toss was from Gamble to Ja’mauri Brice. Once the game reaches a third overtime, both teams must attempt a two-point conversion following any touchdown. Williams scored on a 3-yard run and ran in the two-point conversion to give Calhoun a 50-42 advantage. Cartersville scored on a Jeffries run to make the score 50-48, but a two-point conversion keeper by Gamble came up short. Calhoun improved to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in Region 7-5A. The win also means the Yellow Jackets would take any tie-breaker head to head with Cartersville. The Hurricanes will need to win their remaining four region games and have Calhoun lose twice to overcome the Yellow Jackets in the Region 7-AAAAA race. Cartersville (5-1, 0-1) will look to bounce back next Friday at Cass in a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Woodland softball cruised to a 17-5 Region 7-5A win Wednesday night at Hiram to move into third place in the region standings. The Lady Cats pounded out 16 hits against the Lady Hornets who remain winless in region play. Haley Collum (2.1 IP, 5ER, 8H, 0BB, 2K) and Peyton Dorn ( 3.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 1K) split the pitching duties for the Wildcats. Jordan Hammonds had four hits including a double and one RBI at the top of the Woodland batting order. Elizabeth Hartsfield had two hits including a double and four RBIs. Bailey Sakacsi (RBI), Alana Carnes, and Mackenzie Araya each finished with two hits. Cambrie Carrington hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Kamryn Smith (RBI), Brooke Edmondson (RBI), and Collum added one hit apiece. Karmen Zeferino was credited with one RBI. Woodland (12-13, 6-6) is scheduled to play at Collins Hill Saturday, weather permitting. LAFAYETTE 14, ADAIRSVILLE 4 The LaFayette Lady Ramblers scored 11 runs in their first three frames Wednesday evening on their way to a 14-4 win at Adairsville in Region 6-AAA action. Adairsville scored single runs in the third and fourth innings and added two runs in the bottom of the fifth after trailing 14-2. Megan Gregory had two hits and one RBI for Adairsville. Halle Chasen hit a two-run homer in the fifth. Taylor Evans (RBI), McKenzie Pullam, Jenna Young, Brie Patterson, and Annalee Morris added one hit each. The Ramblers improved to 17-4-1 on the season and stayed at the top of the Region 6-AAA standings with a 9-2 mark. SOFTBALL Adairsville 9, Ridgeland 7 The Lady Tigers built a 5-1 lead through 4-1/2 innings at Ridgeland Tuesday night, then held off the Lady Panthers down the stretch for a 9-7 Region 6-AAA win. Megan Gregory picked up the pitching win in 6-1/3 innings of work. She struck out nine and allowed only two, unearned runs. Halle Chason had four hits and one RBI to pace the Tigers’ offense. Alissa Winters followed with three hits. McKenzie Pullam (3 RBIs), Brie Patterson (RBI), and Jenna Young had two hits each for Adairsville. Taylor Evans (2 RBIs) and Gregory had the other base hits. After going winless through their first seven region games, Dalton has now won three straight. Dalton improves to 5-11 overall and 3-7 in Region 7-AAAA. Cass (8-16, 5-6) plays at Calhoun Thursday. Calhoun 7, Woodland 4 Calhoun scored six runs across the first two innings and held off Woodland Tuesday night 7-4. The Woodland defense committed six errors enabling four, unearned runs for the Yellow Jackets. Alana Carnes had three hits for the Lady Cats. Peyton Dorn followed with two. Cartersville softball lost a 5-2 non-region decision Monday night at Villa Rica. The Lady Canes scored first when Kiley Arnold homered in the top of the first inning, but the host Wildcats posted three runs in the bottom of the first for a 3-1 advantage. Cartersville narrowed the margin to 3-2 in the top of the fourth without the benefit of a hit. A pair of walks, an error, and a wild pitch plated the Canes’ run. Villa Rica added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. A pair of walks and two errors led to two more Wildcats runs for an eventual 5-2 final score. Ava Perkins (6 IP, 5R, 2ER, 5H, 3BB, 2K) suffered the pitching loss for the Lady Canes. In addition to Arnold’s homer, Jordan Bishop and Elizabeth Nelson had two hits each. Villa Rica improved to 16-3 with their win. Cartersville (11-8-1, 9-1) returns to region play Tuesday at home against Hiram and Thursday at Dalton. Both games are 5:55 p.m. starts.

Five local varsity cross country teams were represented Friday and Saturday at the Wingfoot Classic held at Sam Smith Park in Cartersville. The annual race is hosted by the Atlanta Track Club and this year attracted more than 125 teams and running clubs from eight states. Auburn (AL) won the overall girls championship against a field of 23 other teams. Ruby Little of Marist was in girls individual winner in 18:08.50. Brentwood (TN) won the 24-team overall boys championship race with Lambert placing fourth to be the top team from Georgia. Joe Sapone of Holy Innocents’ was the boys overall race winner in 15:06.20. Tyler Jones of Woodland ran to a 47th place finish in the overall championship race. He completed the 5K course in 16:27. The Woodland girls placed 12th in the 21-team Girls Varsity A Division which was won by Richmond Hill. Emma Segars (45th, 21:26), Danielle Thayer (49th, 21:34), Miranda Pelow (70th, 22:05), and Olivia Berry (71st, 22:08) led the Lady Cats in a field of 206 runners. The Cartersville girls were led by Meredith Gaines (157th, 24:09), Samantha Herrera (159th, 24:17), and Vivi Vest (166th, 24:27). The Cartersville and Woodland boys teams competed in the Varsity Boys Division A race and finished back-to-back. Cartersville was 17th and Woodland — without the counting score of Jones — was 18th. The division, which included 26 teams, was won by Dalton. Malachi Vosburgh of Cartersville finished fourth of 241 runners in 16:25. Barrett Stepp and Hayden Mitchell followed in 76th and 78th, respectively in 17:59 and 18:00. Woodland was led by a 21st place finish by Drew Thayer (17:01). Landon McSwain placed 58th for the Wildcats in 17:41 and Juan Mendoza was 86th in 18:06. The Cass boys team ran to a 12th place finish of 27 teams in the Varsity Boys Division B race. Critton Gearhart led the Colonels with a 46th place finish (18:17) out of 202 runners. He was followed by teammates Adam Pierce (58th, 18:48) and Jake Wright (86th, 19:36). Next for Cartersville on the schedule is the Alexander/Asics Invitational October 1 in Douglasville while Cass will run that same day in Cumming at the Rangers Invitational. Up next for Woodland is the Atlanta Classic in Douglasville on October 8.

The Cartersville Lady Canes’ volleyball team won a 16th consecutive Bartow County Championship Tournament title Saturday with a trio of straight sets wins in the event hosted by Cass High School. Cartersville defeated Adairsville in the opening round and Cass in the semifinals. The Hurricanes then faced Adairsville again in the finals to claim the county title once again. The first round win over Adairsville was 25-12, 25-15. The Lady Canes then topped Cass 25-17, 25-9 and closed out their championship match over Adairsville 25-9, 25-16. Lauren Lawson and Ailee England shared team honors in kills for the three matches with 19 each. Lawson and Mia Nicklas both finished with seven service aces. Aly Dunn and Bailey Gardner had a pair of blocks each in the triple-header. Nicklas contributed a team-high 18 digs and Lily Gochee produced 47 assists on the day. In other matches, Cass defeated Woodland 25-21, 25-19. Adairsville outlasted Woodland in three sets with the Lady Cats winning the opening set 25-18 before the Lady Tigers took the final two sets 25-22 and 15-13. Then to reach the finals, Adairsville stopped Cass in three sets. The Colonels won the opening set 25-19 before the Lady Tigers won the last two sets 25-12 and 16-14. In Adairsville’s run to a runner-up finish, Richlyn Blair and Jenna Claire Hendley led the team in kills. Hendley and Addie Pearson paced the Tigers in blocks. Sherry Wells was the team leader in digs and Annie McCormick was the Adairsville assists leader. Jada Zimmerman had seven service aces on the day for the Lady Colonels and Tamira Feanny totaled nine kills in the Cass matches. Cartersville (21-12) travels to Hiram Tuesday where the Lady Canes will also play Cass. Adairsville (11-17-2) makes a trip to Chickamauga Tuesday to play Dade County and host Gordon Lee. Cass (10-19-1) travels to Hiram Tuesday where they will also face Cartersville. Woodland (4-21-1) will make the ride to Shannon on Tuesday to face Darlington and host Model.
