NFL TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (2nd yr. pro; NFL; Clemson; Cartersville HS) … in a pair of home preseason losses August 12 to the Cleveland Browns and this past Saturday to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 22-year-old quarterback is 20-for-33 passing. He was 6-for-12 for 95 yards and one touchdown against the Browns in a 24-13 loss. He also had one rush attempt for 11 yards. In Saturday’s 16-15 loss, Lawrence was 14-for-21 through the air for 133 yards but no touchdowns. He had two rushing attempts for 13 yards. The Jaguars are 0-3 in the preseason and will finish the exhibition schedule against the Falcons in Atlanta this Saturday afternoon. MILLER FORRISTALL — Cleveland Browns (2nd yr. pro; NFL; Alabama; Cartersville HS) … the 24-year-old tight end was targeted twice and had one catch for 11 yards August 12 during a 24-13 win at Jacksonville. The Browns are 1-1 in the preseason and will complete the exhibition schedule Saturday night at home against the Chicago Bears. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Toledo Mud Hens (9th yr. pro; Triple-A Detroit Tigers organization; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … lowered his MiLB season ERA to 2.77 with scoreless appearances August 12 and 17. Working an inning and one-third August 12, the lefty walked one and struck out two in parts of the fourth and fifth innings during a 5-0 home loss to the Omaha Storm Chasers. Last Wednesday at the Columbus Clippers, the 29-year-old struck out one while working a scoreless sixth inning as the Mud Hens won 4-0. Howard is 1-2 in 28 MiLB appearances this season across 26 innings. He has 31 strikeouts. Toledo (61-54) is in third place in the International League’s West Division. The Mud Hens trail Nashville by 8.5 games and host a six game series with the Louisville Bats Tuesday through Sunday. ANTHONY SEIGLER — Hudson Valley Renegades (5th yr. pro; High Class-A New York Yankees organization; Cartersville HS) … in five games this past week at the Brooklyn Cyclones, the 23 year old catcher/DH was 6-for-16 at the plate including one double, six walks, two RBIs, and five runs scored. He also stole his 16th base in Sunday’s win. For the season, Seigler has a .242 batting average with seven home runs and 35 RBIs in 269 official at bats. Hudson Valley (61-52 overall) is 27-20 in the second half standings and in first place by 1.5 games with just 18 games remaining in the regular season. The Renegades play a six game home series Tuesday through Sunday against the Hickory Crawdads.

Cass volleyball finished 2-2 Saturday in four matches played at the Coosa Invitational in Floyd County. The Colonels took a pair of straight set wins over Coosa and Rockmart but lost to Villa Rica in straight sets and LaFayette in a three set battle. Cass defeated Coosa 25-22, 25-14 and topped Rockmart 25-16, 25-21. The Lady Colonels lost the first set with LaFayette 25-23, won the second set 25-16, but fell in a deciding third set 15-3. They also dropped a 25-10, 25-8 decision to Villa Rica. Jada Zimmerman led the Cass attackers with nine kills on the day. Harlee Davis and Tamira Feanny finished with six each. Alondra Burgos had four kills and Carlee Turner added three. Carson Brannon and Davis led the Colonels with nine and eight services aces, respectively. Brannon produced 28 assists. Cass (5-3) gets a non-region rematch at LaFayette Tuesday at 5 p.m. where the Colonels will also play Armuchee.

Excel Christian Academy volleyball improved to 2-1 on the season Friday night with a five-set victory over visiting Heirway Christian Academy. The two teams traded wins through the first four sets before the Lady Eagles captured the win by taking the fifth set. Heirway Christian won the first and third sets 25-11 and 25-12 while Excel Christian won the second and fourth sets 25-14 and 25-21. ECA won the tie-breaking fifth set, 15-8. Excel's Clara Holley went for a 6-point service run in the fourth set and teammate Chae Vieira was the stat leader in kills and blocks for both teams. Excel travels to St. Mary’s Catholic Monday for a 6 p.m. start and will host Covenant Christian and Cedartown Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Cartersville Purple Hurricanes opened the 2022 season Friday night in Canton with a dominant 35-0 win over the Cherokee Warriors. The Cartersville defense kept the Warriors behind the chains much of the night and earned a shutout in the season opener. The Canes built a 28-0 lead in the first half and scored on all but two possessions in the first two quarters. One possession ended with a Cartersville punt that Cherokee misplayed. That Warriors' muff led to a Cartersville score. After the Hurricanes added a third quarter touchdown, the final period was played with a continuous clock enabling the Cartersville coaching staff to get a large number of younger players in the game for their initial varsity experience. Quarterback Paul Gamble connected on three touchdown passes including one on each of the Canes’ first two possessions. The first was a 13 yard completion to Collin Fletcher. His second scoring toss went to Jaylen Scott. Malachi Jeffries had a pair of short touchdown runs to build a 28-0 lead at halftime, then Gamble hooked up with Romo Pace on a 46 yard strike to build a 35-0 Cartersville lead. Jesus Gutierrez successfully booted all five PATs for the Canes. Cartersville (1-0) plays its home opener next Friday with the Jonesboro Cardinals coming to Weinman Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Woodland entered the fourth quarter at East Paulding Friday night trailing 31-0 before the Wildcats scored a pair of touchdowns in a 38-13 opening night loss in Dallas. Javen Parker scored twice in the first half for East Paulding on runs of 13 and 14 yards while Cooper Hall added a 22 yard field goal. Those three scores gave the Raiders a 17-0 lead by halftime. Baylor Thomason connected with Cameron Shelley midway through the third quarter to put East Paulding up 24-0. Quarterback Chantz Bouknight then hooked up with Kenechi Oluku for a 38 yard touchdown pass on the Raiders next possession to make the score 31-0. Woodland defensive lineman Kwadrus Wilson scooped up a botched East Paulding snap with 9:32 remaining in the game and returned it 55 yards for the Wildcats’ first score. The extra point failed leaving the score at 31-6. After Malachi Mitchell added a 4 yard touchdown run for East Paulding with 5:40 remaining, Woodland’s Isaiah Livsey added a final score for the Wildcats on a 10 yard run with 0:33 left in the game. In an exciting matchup that saw the lead exchanged seven times, the Cass Colonels were edged by the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs Friday night 26-25 at Barron Stadium in Rome. The neutral site game was part of the 2022 Corky Kell Classic and was the second of three games Friday at Barron Stadium. When rain pushed through the Floyd County area, the game was delayed for an additional 20 minutes at halftime before the weather cleared. Kennesaw Mountain’s T.J. Jenkins rushed for 179 yards and a touchdown to lead the Mustangs offense. Quarterback Cayman Prangley finished 7-for-15 through the air for 128 yards and a pair of touchdowns while his top receiver Cayden Lee caught five passes for 93 yards and two scores. Lee’s two touchdown receptions were from seven yards in the first quarter to give Kennesaw Mountain a 7-0 lead and from 53 yards in the second period that put the Mustangs up 14-13. Jenkins scored on a 41 yard run in the third period to give Kennesaw Mountain a 23-19 lead and placekicker Ty Roldan — who made all three of his PAT kicks — coverted on a 35 yard field goal with 9:11 left in the fourth quarter for the final go-ahead points. Cass junior runningback Mac Nelson carried 17 times for 111 yards and one touchdown. His score was a 2 yard run into the end zone that gave Cass a 25-23 lead with 1:16 left in the third quarter. Colonels’ quarterback Devin Henderson was 9-for-14 with two touchdowns and 113 yards. He also rushed for 77 yards on 18 attempts including a 29 yard TD scamper that knotted the score 7-7 late in the first quarter. In the second period, Henderson connected with Kintrell Whatley in the back of the end zone for a 19 yard touchdown. The deflected catch capped a 10-play, 79 yard drive for Cass giving the Colonels a 13-7 lead. Sacovie White caught six passes for 59 yards and one touchdown. White’s touchdown catch came on the final play of the first half. It capped a brilliant three play drive in the final minute that covered 58 yards and gave the Colonels a 19-16 halftime advantage. Cass will reflect on some missed opportunities. Two missed PAT kick attempts in the first half, primarily due to poor snaps, led to a failed two-point conversion attempt later in the third quarter. Another poor long snap sailed over punter/placekicker Saul Villela’s head and through the back of the end zone with 5:20 remaining in the second quarter. That miscue gave Kennesaw Mountain a 16-13 lead. “If we eliminate a few of our mistakes, we’re going to be difficult to stop,” Colonels’ head coach Steve Gates said after the game. “We’ve got a few things to clean up — especially the missed tackles — and we’ve got to execute a little better, but I think we discovered we can play with just about anybody. We’re going to be okay. We will regroup and get back to work.” Will Buttram led all Colonel tacklers with seven. Devin Henderson was credited with five stops. Kevin Henderson had four tackles and an interception. Chris Wood finished with four tackles and Todd Gaddy picked off a pair of Mustang passes. Kennesaw Mountain (1-0) hosts Campbell next Friday. Cass (0-1) will entertain Rockmart. The Colonels’ game will be broadcast live on BartowSportsZone.com with pregame coverage beginning at 6 p.m. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Cochran Stadium.

Woodland and Cartersville both earned Region 7-5A wins Thursday night on the road while Cass lost at Calhoun. WOODLAND 6, HIRAM 0 Haley Collum tossed a complete game, one-hitter Thursday night as the Lady Cats blanked host Hiram 6-0 in Region 7-5A action. Collum, who had two hits including a solo home run, walked one and struck out seven in the circle while earning the win. Cambrie Carrington also had two hits for Woodland including a double. Bailey Sakacsi tripled with two RBIs. Alana Carnes (RBI), Elizabeth Hartsfield (RBI), Karmen Zeferino, Kamryn Smith, and Lanie Calhoun added one hit each. The Lady Cats (4-4, 1-1) have games Saturday at Buford with the host Wolves and Collins Hill. CARTERSVILLE 15, DALTON 5 The Lady Canes went to the seventh inning Thursday night at Dalton tied 5-5 but blew the game wide open by scoring ten times in the top of the final frame. Dalton held leads of 4-1 through three innings and 5-3 going to the sixth. Cartersville tied the score with a pair of runs in the sixth before their scoring surge in the seventh inning. Jordan Bishop reached base in all five plate appearances for the Canes. The Cartersville catcher singled, homered, and walked three times. Layne Callan (2 RBIs), Campbell Rogers (2 RBIs), Reese Dumas (2 RBIs), Kiley Arnold (RBI), and Ava Perkins (RBI) added one hit each. Elizabeth Nelson and Jaycee Blackwell contributed one RBI apiece. Kennedy Stevens (3.2 IP, 0R, 1H, 0BB, 2K) earned the pitching win in relief of starter Kiley Arnold (3.1 IP, 5R, 3ER, 6H, 5BB, 1K). Cartersville (3-3-1) plays North Cobb and Sprayberry Saturday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at North Cobb. CALHOUN 10, CASS 8 The Lady Colonels threatened a comeback late Thursday night at Calhoun but came up just short in a 10-8 Region 7-5A loss. Cass trailed 10-5 through four innings and posted three runs in the sixth inning but couldn’t finish the rally. Haylee Dishmon had two hits including a double and three RBIs to lead the Cass attack. Alexis Woods also finished with two hits. Ansley Hight (RBI), Braelyn Franklin (RBI), and Emma Gibson added one hit each. Reese Howard contributed one RBI. Cass (4-3, 1-1) hosts Gilmer Monday at 5:30 p.m. and Hiram Tuesday at 5:55 p.m.

The Adairsville and Cass volleyball teams both split non-region road matches Thursday night while Cartersville dropped a pair of matches on the road. Adairsville volleyball split a pair of matches Thursday night at Hiram defeating Chapel Hill 25-18, 25-20 and lost to the host Hornets 25-17, 25-14. “Richlyn Blair, Jenna Claire Hendley, and Jayne Wilson were our standouts,” said Tigers’ coach Kaylie Vaughn Martin. “Blair had a good night hitting outside and Hendley and Wilson stepped up on defense in the middle.” In the two matches, Blair totaled six aces, 13 kills, and one dig. Hendley had eight kills, two aces, four blocks, and a pair of digs. Wilson totaled three kills, three blocks, one assist, and one dig while Annie McCormick contributed 16 assists. Adairsville (3-5-2) hosts North Murray and Dalton Academy next Tuesday at 5 p.m. CASS WINS AT PICKENS, FALLS TO MURRAY COUNTY Cass volleyball won at Pickens Thursday night 25-13, 25-15 and dropped a match to Murray County 27-25, 25-15 in non-region play. Jenesys Moctezuma totaled 29 digs in the two matches for the Colonels. Carson Brenna contributed 23 assists. Harlee Davis had six kills and five service aces. Jada Zimmerman also finished with six kills. Cass (3-1) plays in the Coosa Invitational Saturday in Rome. CARTERSVILLE DROPS TWO MATCHES The Lady Canes lost a pair of matches Thursday night in Acworth falling to North Cobb Christian in three sets and Allatoona in straight sets. Cartersville won the opening set with host North Cobb Christian 25-18, but lost the next two 25-18 and 15-10. Allatoona defeated the Hurricanes 25-18 in Set 1 and held on to win Set 2, 25-23. Cartersville (2-2) is scheduled to face South Forsyth and Creekview next Tuesday starting at 5:30 p.m. in Cumming.

Cartersville softball lost a 12-0 decision Wednesday night to visiting LaFayette in six innings. The Ramblers grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and added single runs in the third and fifth innings, but it was a seven-run sixth inning that ended the game early. LaFayette outhit Cartersville eight to three, but the Lady Canes also committed six defensive errors leading to seven unearned runs. Catcher Jordan Bishop had two hits for the Hurricanes and outfielder Elizabeth Nelson collected the other base hit. Pitcher Ava Perkins (2.1 IP, 4ER, 2H, 8BB, 1K) started in the circle and was tagged with the loss. McKinley Chada (3.2 IP, 8R, 1ER, 6H, 2BB, 1K) pitched in relief. LaFayette improved to 5-2-1 with the victory. Cartersville (2-4-1, 1-0) plays at Dalton Thursday in a Region 7-5A matchup.

Adairsville softball suffered an 8-4 loss to Cedartown Wednesday night at home in non-region action. The visiting Bulldogs led 2-0 after four innings and extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of the fifth before the Tigers challenged late. Adairsville pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth and then narrowed the Cedartown lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth. Brie Patterson smacked a two run home run in the Tigers’ sixth and Kelsey Gleason doubled home another run later in the frame. Cedartown put the game away in the top of the seventh, however, when Reagan Clarke hit a three run home run that surged the Bulldogs back to a four-run advantage. Patterson led the Tigers with two hits including her homer. Gleason and Annalee Morris had the other Adairsville base hits. Megan Gregory (4.1 IP, 5R, 2ER, 3H, 3BB, 8K) started in the circle for the Tigers and suffered the pitching loss. Chelsea Bates (2.2 IP, 3ER, 4H, 0BB, 2K) pitched in relief. Cedartown improved to 1-3 on the season. Adairsville (4-3-1) hosts Bremen to begin Region 6-AAA play next Tuesday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader.

All five local high school volleyball teams were in action Tuesday night with Cass and Cartersville sweeping opponents to begin their 2022 seasons. First-year program Excel Christian Academy won while Woodland split matches and Adairsville lost twice in Chickamauga. COLONELS TOP GORDON CENTRAL, TEMPLE TO OPEN 2022 CAMPAIGN The Cass High volleyball team opened the 2022 season Tuesday night at home with wins over Gordon Central and Temple. The Colonels defeated Gordon Central 25-22, 25-15, and later defeated Temple 25-23, 25-21. Carson Brannon had nine service aces for the Lady Colonels in the two matches and Harlee Davis added six. Jenesys Moctezuma totaled 20 digs and Jada Zimmerman compiled six kills. Cass (2-0) travels to Jasper Thursday night to take on Murray County and host Pickens beginning at 6 p.m. CANES OPEN SEASON WITH STRAIGHT SETS WINS The Lady Canes began their 2022 volleyball campaign Tuesday night at the Storm Center with wins over Northwest Whitfield (25-13, 25-20) and Pickens (25-10, 25-11). Against Pickens, Ailee England totaled nine kills, three aces, two digs, and one block to help lead the Hurricanes. Lauren Lawson had six kills and one block. Lily Gochee contributed 18 assists with four digs. Tennesse Abernathy was credited with four kills. Riley Jarrett had four digs while Mia Nicklas added two digs and a pair of assists. Nicklas had seven digs and five service aces in the Cartersville win over Northwest Whitfield. Gochee shared 20 assists. Abernathy totaled seven kills. England finished with six kills, Lawson contributed six kills and two blocks, and Jarrett added four aces. The Lady Canes (2-0) travel to Acworth Thursday evening to face Allatoona and host North Cobb Christian. EXCEL CHRISTIAN DEFEATS COVENANT CHRISTIAN IN THREE SETS Coach Katie Jones and the new Eagles’ volleyball program earned a hard-fought three-set win Tuesday night over Covenant Christian of Cedartown. Excel won the opening set 25-18, dropped the middle set 19-25, but held on to win the deciding set, 27-25. Julia Ray led the Eagles to eight straight points and knotted the score in the final set after Excel trailed 24-16. Chae Vieria’s service ace was match point. Excel hosts Heirway Christian Academy Friday at 6 p.m. WOODLAND SPLITS MATCHES WITH SOUTHEAST WHITFIELD AND PAULDING COUNTY Woodland volleyball defeated Southeast Whitfield in three sets before losing in straight sets to Paulding County Tuesday night at home in non-region action. Woodland defeated the visiting Raiders 25-14, 18-25, and 15-9. The Lady Cats fell to the Patriots 15-25 and 22-25. Madison West had 11 kills, six digs, and three aces on the night for Woodland. Kendall Condon finished with 18 assists, eight digs, four kills, and three service aces. Anastyn Jones totaled six kills, six aces, and six digs. Bailee Motes produced four kills and two aces while Lili Womack contributed 16 digs and four aces. Woodland (2-6-1) returns to action next Tuesday in Marietta where the Lady Cats will face Campbell and host Sprayberry. TIGERS DROP TWO MATCHES Adairsville volleyball dropped a pair of matches Tuesday night in Chickamauga falling to Oakwood Christian Academy 25-22, 25-21 and Ridgeland 25-19, 25-15. In the loss to Oakwood Christian, Jordan Hartline and Jayna Wilson contributed seven blocks and three kills. Jenna Claire Hendley totaled six blocks, three service aces, and a pair of kills. Annie McCormick contributed two aces, two assists, and two digs. Richlyn Blair added three kills. Against Ridgeland, Blair had four aces, four kills, and one dig. Hendley totaled six aces, two kills, and a dig. Wilson posted three kills and two blocks. Annie McCormick added twelve aces. The Tigers return to action Thursday at Hiram.

Cartersville and Cass softball opened Region 7-AAAAA play Tuesday night with wins while Woodland dropped its first region game of the year with Calhoun. Meanwhile, Adairsville won its fourth straight non-region game with a 10-5 victory over visiting Armuchee. CARTERSVILLE 13, HIRAM 11 The Lady Canes won an offensive shootout Tuesday night in their first Region 7-5A game of the year, defeating visiting Hiram 13-11. The two teams combined for 26 hits including eight extra base hits. Ava Perkins led the way with three hits including a double, a triple, and four RBIs. Elizabeth Nelson was next with three hits. Mikey Lewis (double, three RBIs), Jordan Bishop (two RBIs), and Layne Callan (double, RBI) followed with two hits each. Kiley Arnold finished with a double and one RBI. Reese Dumas contributed a double. Campbell Rogers had one hit and McKinley Chada added a pair of RBIs. Perkins (3.1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 3BB, 3K) picked up the pitching victory in relief of starter Arnold (3.2 IP, 10R, 6ER, 9H, 1BB, 3K). CASS 6, DALTON 3 Cass softball opened play in Region 7-5A Tuesday night with a 6-3 win over Dalton at the Cass Athletic Complex. The Colonels built a 6-0 lead through five innings with a run in the first, three in the third, and two more in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dalton scored a run in the sixth and added two more in the top of the seventh but Cass pitcher Alexis Woods was able to induce a fly out to end the game. Ansley Hight had two hits including a two-run home run in the fifth inning. It was her fifth homer in the Lady Colonels’ first six games this season and she finished the night with four RBIs. Haylee Dishmon (RBI) and Alexis Woods also had two hits each for Cass. Reese Howard, Bailey York, and Olivia Woods added one hit each in the win. Darianna Sosa was credited with one RBI. Alexis Woods tossed a complete game for the pitching victory. She scattered nine hits and did not surrender a walk. Only two of the three Catamounts runs were earned. Dalton falls to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in region action. Cass (4-2, 1-0) plays another Region 7-5A game Thursday at Calhoun. First pitch is scheduled for 5:55 p.m. ADAIRSVILLE 10, ARMUCHEE 5 The Lady Tigers doubled up visiting Armuchee Tuesday night in Tiger Valley with a 10-5 non-region softball win. Adairsville totaled 13 hits in the win and produced five extra base hits. Sophomore Jordan Clay (5.2 IP, 4R, 2ER, 7H, 4BB, 2K) started in the circle and earned the pitching win for the Tigers. Chelsea Bates (1.1 IP, 1ER, 2H, 1BB, 2K) closed out the final four outs. McKenzie Pullam led the Adairsville attack with three hits and two RBIs. Brie Patterson doubled, tripled, and drove in a pair of runs. Taylor Evans also had two hits with one RBI. Kelsey Gleason finished with a hit and two RBIs. Jenna Young produced one hit and one RBI. Riley Mounger (double), Alissa Winters, Annalee Morris (triple), and Halle Chason (double) added one hit apiece. Adairsville (4-2) hosts Cedartown in another non-region game Wednesday at 5 p.m. CALHOUN 12, WOODLAND 4 Last season, Woodland eliminated Calhoun after both teams qualified for the Final Eight in Class 5A in Columbus. Tuesday night, the visiting Yellow Jackets exacted a bit of revenge with a 12-4 Region 7-5A win over the Lady Cats. Calhoun (3-1, 1-0) rattled off 20 hits in their win and scored in each of the final five frames after trailing Woodland 2-0 in the early going. Kamryn Smith had two hits and two RBIs to pace the Lady Cats’ offense. Haley Collum doubled. Peyton Dorn and Bailey Sakacsi added the other Woodland hits. Collum (4 IP, 7R, 6ER, 12H) was saddled with the pitching loss. Dorn (3 IP, 5ER, 8H, 1BB, 1K) pitched in relief. Woodland (2-4, 0-1) travels to Hiram Thursday for a 5:55 p.m. region matchup.
