Georgia Highlands College baseball won a high-scoring conference game over East Georgia College Tuesday afternoon in Rome, 14-10. The two teams combined for 29 hits and smacked a combined five home runs. East Georgia held leads of 3-2 through three innings and 8-4 through five. Georgia Highlands responded with a six-run sixth inning and added four more runs over the next two frames to secure the win. Caleb Garner (2.1 IP, 0R, 3H, 1BB, 1K) picked up the pitching win for the Chargers in relief of starter Jacob Ryan (4.2 IP, 8ER, 9H, 0BB, 5K). Zachary Murray (0.2 IP, 2ER, 2H, 2BB, 1K), Ryan Suppa (0.1 IP), and Chandler Wood (1 IP, 0R, 2H) also pitched in relief. David Smith led the GHC offense with three hits and three RBIs. Ethan Anderson also had three hits including a home run and two RBIs. Zayd Brannigan had two hits with one RBI. Conner Todaro homered, walked three times, and drove in three runs. Ben Olson contributed a double and finished with three RBIs. Max Kops (double, RBI), Parker Poteet (double), and Mick Moody added one base hit each. The loss dropped East Georgia to 20-14 overall and 1-4 in GCAA conference play. Georgia Highlands (29-2, 5-0) will travel to Swainsboro to complete the four-game series this week with a single game Friday and a doubleheader Saturday at East Georgia.

Georgia Highlands softball won the second game of a conference doubleheader Tuesday over visiting Andrew College, 7-6, to earn a split on the day. The Chargers fell behind 4-0 in the first inning, rallied in the middle innings to go ahead 7-4, and then held on in the seventh inning to escape with a one-run victory. Maggie Schandera (5.2 IP, 2ER, 6H, 1BB, 4K), Gracee Ellis (0.1 IP, 4ER, 5H), and Katie Traynor (1 IP, 0R, 0H) pitched for Georgia Highlands in the win. Audrey Johnson hit a grand slam and doubled for the Chargers’ offense. Madison Dennis finished with two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Haley Overton also had two hits for GHC. Andrew College moves to 8-22 on the season and 2-4 in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association standings. The two teams combined for 29 hits and three home runs in the conference battle. Andrew led 6-0 early, but Georgia Highlands tied the game heading into the seventh inning. The Tigers then posted a three-run seventh in their eventual win. Emily Phillips, Alexis Copeland, and Taryn Strayer combined for seven hits and six RBIs for the Tigers. Phillips’ three hits included a double and Strayer homered. Dale Elmore (6.2 IP, 5ER, 11H, 2BB, 6K) earned the pitching win for Andrew. Haliley Stovall (0.1 IP, 1ER, 3H) retired one out in the fifth inning in the circle. Audrey Johnson had three hits and two RBIs for the Chargers. Hailey Cronic had two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Haley Overton and Allison Deweese both finished with two hits and one RBI. Deweese homered for her RBI. On the baseball diamond, Cartersville High product Jordan Wilkie had a strong performance at the plate for his Augusta University Jaguars. Also from baseball reports, former Hurricane Jake Gooch drove in seven runs in a four game stretch for Central Alabama Community College. The right handed hurler tossed a 7-inning shutout last Tuesday to defeat visiting Sam Houston 1-0. Todd scattered three hits, two walks, and a hit batsman while striking out three. In a 9-1 loss Friday, she surrendered four earned runs in 3-and-1/3 innings at Tulsa. She issued no walks but hit two batters and recorded three strikeouts. Saturday in a no-decision start, Todd yielded four runs (only one earned) in 3-and-1/3 innings on two hits and three walks. Houston rallied to edge Tulsa 13-11. The Cougars (17-16-1, 1-1-1 American Athletic Conference) host a doubleheader with Texas A&M Wednesday and entertain Memphis in a three-game conference series Friday through Sunday. ALEXA VARNER — Shorter University (So., Adairsville HS) … made a pair of starts and appeared twice as a pinch runner last week as the Hawks went 0-5 against Young Harris College and University of Montevallo. PRO BASEBALL SAM HOWARD — Pittsburgh Pirates (9th-yr. pro; Georgia Southern; Cartersville HS) … worked his second, Grapefruit League one-inning appearance last Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers and faced seven batters in suffering a pitching loss Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles. In the 29-year-old’s scoreless frame against the Tigers he fanned two. The Orioles touched him for five earned runs on three hits including one two-run homer and two walks. The Pirates are 4-4 through their first eight exhibition games. BASEBALL MASON BARNETT — Auburn University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … had a no-decision start Tuesday in an eventual 13-12 win over South Alabama and made a relief appearance Sunday in an eventual 13-9 victory over Texas A&M as Auburn went 3-1 for the week. In the two appearances, Barnett worked five total innings allowing five earned runs on six hits, three walks, and one hit batsman facing 24 batters. He recorded five strikeouts. MICAH EARWOOD — Georgia State (Fr., Cartersville HS) … retired the final four outs of the eighth and ninth innings last Tuesday in a 10-3 loss to Georgia at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. Earwood entered with two outs in the eighth inning and allowed no runs on one hit and one walk. He struck out two of six batters faced in the inning and one-third. DAVIS WILLIAMS — Birmingham Southern College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … made a pair of two-inning pitching appearances last week in home games against 6th-ranked LaGrange College and Millsaps College. Williams allowed four runs, three earned on four hits and three walks last Wednesday in an 8-2 loss to LaGrange. He struck out one of 14 batters faced. He earned his second save of the season Saturday closing out the eighth and ninth innings. The right-hander surrendered just one hit, no runs, no walks, and fanned two. The Jags (10-16, 0-9) host Newberry College Tuesday and USC-Aiken Thursday before traveling to Lander University for a three-game conference series Friday and Saturday. PRO BASKETBALL ASHTON HAGANS — Raptors 905 NBA G League; Cartersville native; Newton HS) … Hagans sat out a 130-115 win over Wisconsin March 23, but made up for lost time during the team's final two games of the week. In a March 27 rematch with Wisconsin, Hagans produced 15 assists to go with six points and five rebounds in a 123-105 victory. He bettered that output in a 111-103 triumph March 29 against Grand Rapids, contributing 15 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds. A.J. MOSBY — Albany Patroons, The Basketball League (Cartersville HS) … produced a team-high 23 points in a 112-90 win over Pennsylvania in a March 26 home game. He added four rebounds and two assists. The day prior, Albany defeated Atlantic City 115-85, but stats were unavailable for that victory. GOLF CHANC WILLIS — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS) … paced the Eagles and placed 20th overall in the Monument Golf Oldfield Classic March 28-29 in Okatie, South Carolina. Reinhardt finished sixth out of a dozen teams. Willis proved extremely consistent in the event, shooting a pair of 76s before ending with a 75 on the par-72 course. TENNIS HOUSTON MEDLOCK — Piedmont College (Sr., Adairsville HS) … paired with Patrick Dempsey to earn an 8-0 win on Line 1 doubles in a 9-0 triumph March 25 at Mississippi University for Women. He and Dempsey fell 8-1 on the top doubles line March 26 at Sewanee. Medlock also dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision in a Line 2 singles match against the Tigers. As a team, Piedmont finished 4-1 during a busy three-day road stretch. Following a 7-2, full-strength win March 24 over LaGrange, the Lions split into two squads for the remaining matches, which also included sweeps of Berea (Kentucky) and Maryville (Tennessee) in USA South action. EMILY SURCEY — Arkansas State University (Fr., Cass HS) … helped the Red Wolves capture their first Sun Belt Conference team win of the season with a 4-1 victory over Appalachian State March 27 at home. The former Cass star cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory on Line 2 singles. Surcey and doubles partner Hunter Roper received a forfeit win to help Arkansas State claim the doubles team point. The day prior, the team slumped to a 4-0 defeat against Coastal Carolina. Surcey and Roper dropped a 6-1 decision, while the local's singles match was abandoned with Surcey having won 7-6 (7-2) in the first set but trailing 4-1 in the second. BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont College (So., Woodland HS) … split his six matches over the three-day span. Against LaGrange, he emerged victorious on Line 1 singles, winning both sets by a 6-2 score. The southpaw teamed with Kody Dills on Line 2 doubles and came up short by an 8-3 margin, although the Lions still managed to win the doubles team point. Versus Mississippi University for Women, VanOrder eased to a 6-0, 6-2 win on the top singles line. On Line 3 doubles, he and Dills picked up an 8-0 victory. Even VanOrder's hot streak couldn't prevent Piedmont from suffering a 9-0 loss to Sewanee, as he dropped every game in singles play and paired with Dills in an 8-1 defeat. TRACK AND FIELD TERRY BERDIN — Reinhardt University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … came in 22nd in the 100-meter dash and ran the first leg of the 4x400 relay team that finished seventh at the Don McGarey Invitational hosted by Kennesaw State. The Cartersville High School gymnastics team hosted their first home meet at the Cartersville Twisters facility this past Saturday. There were two schools in the Class 5A and lower division with a dozen competitors at the meet. North Oconee won the division with 104.75 points. Cartersville finished with a score of 96.3. Karley Garrison placed second in All Around with a 33.9 score. She was third in beam, floor, and fault with scores of 8.4, 8.6, and 8.5. Jayla Byrd was third in All Around with a 32.3. She tied with Garrison on floor with an 8.6. Annaston Wilson placed fourth All Around with a 30.1. She improved her bar event score by almost one full point. The Canes will complete the regular season on Tuesday, April 12 at The Lovett School at 5 p.m.

Cass pitchers Carson Hill and Hayden Cole combined to scatter six hits and three walks Tuesday night on the road to shutout Class 5A fifth-ranked Calhoun, 2-0. The duo also did a bulk of the Colonels damage at the plate as Cass earned an important region win. Hill started on the mound and gave up three hits and two walks while striking out six in five innings of work. Cole closed out the final two innings surrendering three hits and a walk while fanning two. The Colonels’ combo shutout the Yellow Jackets for the first time this season in 17 games. Meanwhile, Cass posted the game’s only runs in the top of the second inning. Hill started the inning with a line drive single to center field. His courtesy runner C Cabe moved up to second when Todd Gaddy reached on an infield error. Cole then followed with an RBI double and Gaddy scored on the ensuing throw. Those two runs would be enough. Jacob Tolson and Andon Lewis had two hits each for Calhoun. Jax Bishop (5.2 IP, 2R, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 11K) was tagged with the pitching loss for the Yellow Jackets. Jake Slaughter (1.1 IP, 0R, 1H, 2K) finished out the sixth and seventh innings. Aidan Larkin had two hits including a double for the Cass offense. Cole was credited with two RBIs with his double. Hill, Connor Jenkins, and Andrew Middleton added one hit apiece for the Colonels. Calhoun slips to 13-4 overall and 3-2 in Region 7-5A. Cass improved to 5-14 and 4-3. The three game region series now moves to the Cass Athletic Complex for a doubleheader Friday starting at 5 p.m. WOODLAND 18, HIRAM 2 The Wildcats piled up sixteen hits Tuesday night at Hiram in an 18-2 Region 7-5A rout. Chase Carson, Ayden Ray, and Conner Stermer all homered and Woodland produced ten extra base hits in the one-sided road win. Wildcats Rowan Billings (3 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 4K) and Nate Rosser (2 IP, 0R, 0H, 6K) combined on the mound to strike out ten in the five inning game. Julian Wright paced the Woodland offense with three hits including a triple and two RBIs. Carson tripled, homered, and had two RBIs. Stermer double, homered, and finished with two RBIs. Jakiyon Porter and Jacob Gravett produced two hits including a double with two RBIs each. Mason Williams contributed a double and had three RBIs. LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 6, ADAIRSVILLE 5 (8 inn.) The two teams traded the lead five times Tuesday night and went to an extra inning before Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe escaped with a 6-5 victory at Adairsville. LFO scored first in the top of the first inning with Adairsville taking a 2-1 advantage by the end of the first frame. The Warriors regained the lead in the second inning but Adairsville grabbed a 5-3 lead in the third. LFO added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the score 5-5 and the two teams finished the regulation seven innings knotted. Three consecutive hits by Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe in the top of the eighth inning forced home the eventual game-winning run with Adairsville unable to answer in the bottom of the frame. Tanner Mantooth (3 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K) picked up the pitching win for the Warriors with three innings of scoreless relief for starter Will Carroll (5 IP, 5ER, 5H, 3BB, 1K). Lankie needed only 69 pitches in the seven innings of work. He walked one and struck out four with over 68 percent of his pitches in the strike zone. The loss for the Purple Hurricanes comes in their first game after being ranked No. 1 in Class 5A by Georgia Dugout Club Preview. The Titans are currently ranked No. 6. Blessed Trinity scored four runs in the home half of the first inning to take an early lead. The Titans had four hits and a walk in the opening inning including a two-run homer by Michael Zito. The hosts then added a single run in the fifth inning and four more in the sixth to put the game away. The Titans totaled eight hits on the night with half going for extra bases. Ryan Johnson (5 IP, 5R, 4ER, 5H, 1BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss for Cartersville with a five inning start. Tyler Williamson (1 IP, 4ER, 3H, 1BB, 1K) surrendered four earned runs in the sixth. The Adairsville girls soccer team lost a 3-1 decision to Coahulla Creek Tuesday night in Tiger Valley and the loss will keep the Lady Tigers out of the state playoffs this season. The visiting Lady Colts led 1-0 at the intermission and posted two more tallies in the second half. Gabi Becerra scored the Adairsville goal off an assist from Elle Causby in the 59th minute. Coahulla Creek improved 11-5 with their win and 5-2 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (8-4-1, 4-4) will close out regular season play Friday with a non-region match at home against Mount Zion-Carroll at 5:30 p.m. COAHULLA CREEK 4, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 0 The visiting Colts improved to 8-5-3 and 6-1 in Region 6-AAA with a 4-0 win Tuesday night at Adairsville. Coahulla Creek will host Murray County Thursday night with an opportunity to host a state playoff game with a win over the Indians. Adairsville (4-11, 1-7) wraps up the season Friday at home in a non-region match against Mount Zion-Carroll.

The Cass girls and the Woodland boys won the Region 7-5A head-to-head tennis matchup between the two schools Tuesday night at Hamilton Crossing Park. The Cartersville boys golf team won the LaFayette Invitational championship last Friday at LaFayette Golf Course. Team members are Andrew Lutjens, Reid Lowry, Carson Harris, Owen Dunn, Brody Tidwell and Camden Meadows, who landed on the all-tournament team. The Canes are coached by Chad Murray.

The Cartersville boys finished third and the Lady Canes were fourth Saturday at the 10-team New Manchester Invitational in Douglasville. The girls meet was won by Lithia Springs with 131 points. Host New Manchester was runner-up (119) followed by Douglas County (87), Cartersville (81), and Paulding County (70). In the boys meet, New Manchester won with 154 points followed by Douglas County (114), Cartersville (101), Paulding County (93) and Lithia Springs (79). North Paulding, Hiram, Osborne, Salem, and Fulton Leadership Academy were also represented at the meet. After winning their GCAA conference opener over Andrew College last Tuesday at LakePoint, Georgia Highlands baseball swept a weekend three-game series in Cuthbert for a four-game sweep over the Tigers. The sweep also extends the Chargers' current win streak to a dozen games. In three games Friday and Saturday, Georgia Highlands outscored Andrew 35-7. GHC won 11-5 Friday and swept Saturday’s doubleheader 4-1 and 20-1. Conner Todaro finished the three game set with eight hits including a home run, a triple, a double, a sac fly, and six RBIs. Caden Smith followed with five hits including three home runs, a double, and four RBIs. Max Kops also had five hits in the three games including a home run and two RBIs. David Smith and Zayd Brannigan contributed four hits each in the weekend series. They both homered and both finished the series with five RBIs. Gage Valles (5.2 IP, 3ER, 9H, 1BB, 4K) picked up the pitching win Friday. Conner Perry (7 IP, 1ER, 8H, 1BB, 7K) collected a win on Saturday as did Eric Moore (7 IP, 1ER, 7H, 1BB, 7K). The Chargers (28-2, 4-0) will host East Georgia College Tuesday in Rome to open their next GCAA conference series. The final three games move to Swainsboro Friday and Saturday.

Georgia Highlands softball opened conference play in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Saturday and Sunday splitting a pair of doubleheaders with Abraham Baldwin and South Georgia State. Saturday, the Chargers defeated the ABAC Fillies 9-8 in the first game, but lost the second game of the doubleheader 5-1. Madison Dennis had five hits in the two games at ABAC including a pair of home runs and a double. She also scored four runs and drove in five. Bradey Tharp had three hits including a double and scored one run. Maggie Schandera (3 IP, 2R, 1ER, 4H, 3BB) picked up the pitching win in the first game in relief. Haley Robinson (6 IP, 5R, 2ER, 9H, 1BB) was the losing pitcher for GHC in the second game. Gracee Ellis (3 IP, 5ER, 6H, 2BB, 1K) and Katie Traynor (1 IP, 1ER, 1H, 2BB) also pitched in Saturday’s doubleheader. Sunday at South Georgia State, the Lady Chargers lost 13-5 in the opener but came back to take the second game, 9-1. Haley Overton finished the day with five hits inclduing a double. She scored a pair of runs and drove in one. Hailey Cronic followed with four hits including two doubles with two runs scored and two RBIs. Audrey Johnson and Malone Aldridge added three hits each for GHC. Robinson (7 IP, 1ER, 5H, 1BB, 5K) tossed a complete game to win Game 2 on Sunday. Schandera (0.0 IP, 5R, 1ER, 2H, 1BB) was tagged with the loss in Sunday’s opener. Ellis (5.2 IP, 8R, 5ER, 10H, 1BB) pitched in relief. Georgia Highlands (9-21, 2-2) hosts Andrew College Tuesday and East Georgia State Friday in conference doubleheaders.
