Reagan Weightman scored three goals and Chloe Ravish made a save on a Cass penalty kick to lift the Woodland Lady Cats over visiting Cass Friday night, 3-2. Weightman scored all three Woodland goals in the first 18 minutes with Carlie Forman assisting on two of the scores. Morgan Tompkins scored a goal late in the first half to make the score 3-1 at the intermission and added a second goal off a corner kick midway through the second half to pull the Lady Colonels within one score. Cass was awarded a penalty kick in the final eight minutes, but Ravish made the key save to secure Woodland’s victory. Woodland (5-6-2, 2-3) secured a Class 5A state playoff berth as a 4-seed. The Lady Cats have non-region regular season matches remaining Monday at home against South Paulding (5:30 p.m.), at Paulding County Tuesday (5:30 p.m.) and at home against Rome Friday night (5:30 p.m.). The Lady Cats will open the state playoffs the following week at third-ranked Chamblee. The Bulldogs are the Region 5-5A champs. CASS BOYS TOP WOODLAND ON PENALTY KICKS After playing the full 90 minutes of regulation and two more five minute overtime periods Friday night at Wildcats Stadium, Woodland and Cass went to a penalty kick shootout to ultimately decide Region 7-5A’s final state playoff berth. Cass’ Juan Pajarito, who had lifted Cass over Cartersville earlier in the season with a final penalty kick, converted the Colonels fifth PK in the shootout for a 5-4 victory over the Wildcats. Carlos Morales, Camden Hillhouse, Alex Hernandez, and Jose Rodriguez also made penalty kicks in the shootout for Cass. The victory — along with Cartersville's win over Calhoun Friday night — left the Colonels in a three-way tie for second place in Region 7-5A with Calhoun and Cartersville. The three teams finished the region schedule with 1-1 marks against each other and 3-2 in all region games. Due to the region tiebreaker of fewest goals allowed in head-to-head games, Cartersville wound up the No. 2-seed, Calhoun third, and Cass will be the No. 4-seed. Cass (10-5-1, 3-2) will host East Paulding in a non-region match to close out the regular season Tuesday night before going on the road the following week to face the Region 5-5A champion in the opening round of the state playoffs.

The Adairsville girls led in possession time and shots on goal Thursday night, but visiting Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe got a game-tying goal from Anesa Merdzo with about eight minutes remaining in regulation and a second score by Merdzo in overtime to edge the Lady Tigers 2-1. The loss puts the Lady Tigers in need of a win next Tuesday at home against Coahulla Creek to stay alive for a state playoff berth. Even with a win, the Adairsville girls could miss the playoffs pending outcomes of other region games. Adairsville took a 1-0 lead in Thursday’s game when a corner kick by Emma Collins put the ball in position for Kaylee Jordan to finish it with a goal with less than 15 minutes remaining. From that point, the Warriors offense picked up the pace and kept pressure on Adairsville’s defense through the end of regulation and overtime. Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe improved to 7-5 overall and 7-1 at the top of the Region 6-AAA standings. Adairsville (8-3-1, 4-3) hosts Coahulla Creek Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Lady Tigers at 4-3 in the region are in the playoff mix for a potential playoff spot with the Lady Colts (4-2 in the region), Ringgold (3-2), North Murray (3-2), and Murray County (3-2). Adairsville has head-to-head tie-breaker advantage over two of the three already. The Lady Tigers did drop a 2-1 decision to North Murray earlier this month. LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 4, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 1 The visiting Warriors built an early 3-0 lead in the first half Thursday night and added a late second half goal for a 4-0 lead before the Tigers answered with a score of their own. Blade Benefield found the back of the net with less than five minutes remaining. LFO improved to 5-4-1 overall and 4-4 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (4-10, 1-6) hosts Coahulla Creek Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Cartersville boys climbed the region seeding ladder Friday night with an impressive 3-0 win over visiting Calhoun, The Canes controlled play throughout and moved up to the region’s No. 2-seed by virtue of a region tie-breaker rules. Cartersville, Calhoun, and Cass all finished 3-2 in region action. The tie-breaker leaves Calhoun as a 3-seed and Cass as the region’s No. 4-seed. The three teams in the tie were all 1-1 against one another, but Cartersville allowed the fewest goals in those games. Melvin Velasquez and Dawson Gulasa both scored first half goals off assists from Daniel Abeja to earn the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead at halftime. Marvel Velasquez scored on a penalty kick in the 48th minute for the Canes’ third goal. Cartersville (8-7-1, 3-2) will conclude regular season play Friday at Allatoona with a non-region game at 7:30 p.m. and will host the Region 5-5A No. 3-seed the following week in the Class 5A state playoffs. CALHOUN 2, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 1 The Lady Canes slipped to the third-seed from Region 7-5A Friday night after suffering a 2-1 loss to Calhoun Friday night at Weinman Stadium. Calhoun scored a pair of first half goals — one on a penalty kick in the early minutes — to put the Lady Canes in an early hole. Hattie Williams scored off an assist from Abbey Craig for Cartersville’s goal. It narrowed the margin to 2-1 but the Lady Canes got no closer. Cartersville (5-9-1, 3-2) qualifies for the state playoffs as a 3-seed with Calhoun (7-5-1, 4-1) earning the region’s No. 2-seed. Cartersville has a non-region match Friday at Allatoona to wrap of regular season play. The Lady Canes will travel to 4th-ranked St. Pius X in the opening round of the Class 5A state playoffs. Calhoun will host 8th-ranked Decatur.

There was plenty of local high school baseball action Friday night. Class 5A third-ranked Cartersville swept a doubleheader with region rival Woodland at Richard Bell Field, winning 12-3 and 15-0. In Roswell, Cass lost both games of a doubleheader at Blessed Trinity 14-0 and 8-1 as the Titans remained unbeaten in region action. Also, the Adairsville Tigers suffered their first region loss of the season at Murray County, 4-3. GAME 1: CARTERSVILLE 12, WOODLAND 3 After Woodland took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning, Cartersville tallied ten runs in their next two offensive frames to pull away with a 12-3 win. Caleb Daniel had three hits for Cartersville including a double and one RBI. Drew Rothschild finished with two hits and three RBIs. Jake Brasfield totaled two hits with two RBIs. Curt Bonner hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Harrison Childers (3 RBIs), Elliott Easton (RBI), and Jacob Ray (triple) added one hit each for the Purple Hurricanes. McKibbon issued walks in the second and fourth innings and needed only 56 pitches to work through the four frames. Cartersville finished with seven hits, five walks, and took advantage of seven Woodland defensive errors. The Canes also swiped five bases. Elliott Eastin was the only Hurricane with two hits. Todd Gaddy singled in the fifth inning for the Colonels and Cayden Roberts led off the seventh with the only other Cass hit. Roberts later scored on a groundout by Jesiel Moctezuma. Cooper Milford and Michael Zito had two hits each for the Blessed Trinity offense. Kade Kisz, Zito, and Milford combined to drive in six of the Titans’ eight runs. The host Indians took a 3-0 lead in the first inning with Adairsville narrowing the margin to 3-2 in the top of the fourth. Murray added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth that proved to be the decisive run. Adairsville added a run in the sixth to make it 4-3 but would get no closer. Braden Powell (3.1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 2BB, 4K) was saddled with the pitching loss for Adairsville. Jack Nelson (2.2 IP, 1R, 0ER, 1H, 5K) also pitched in relief for the Tigers. Brenden Carroll, who drove in Adairsville’s first run in the fourth inning with a groundout, also drove in the Tigers’ sixth inning run with a double. Tyler Driggers’ ground ball RBI single scored Easton Elrod Thursday night in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Adairsville Tigers to a 4-3 walk-off win over region foe Murray County. Adairsville led 1-0 in the fourth inning on Evan Sanders’ RBI single, but the Indians grabbed a 3-1 lead the next inning with just one hit. Following a single to start their fifth inning, Murray County tied the game with a hit batsman and an infield error. Two wild pitches and two walks later, the Indians had knotted the score at 3-3. After a scoreless sixth inning, Adairsville relief pitcher Peyton Bowen worked a scoreless top of the seventh to set up the Tigers’ walk-off heroics. Bowen (1 IP, 0R, 1H, 2K) collected the pitching win with his inning of relief. Jack Whitley (6 IP, 3R, 0ER, 3H, 4BB, 7K) started on the mound for Adairsville. This week's update includes more than 30 local competitors. A.J. Mosby has gotten off to a hot start in his second year in The Basketball League. The former Cartersville High star posted a double-double in a recent win for the Albany Patroons, and Mosby averaged 19.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game over his first five appearances. Elsewhere in the professional basketball ranks, Cartersville native Ashton Hagans and Raptors 905 only played once last week, but they certainly made the most of it. In a home rout of Fort Wayne, Hagans recorded 15 points and the same number of assists in 30 minutes of action. Collegiately, Woodland graduate Bryce VanOrder went 3-0 for the Piedmont men's tennis team; Cartersville golf product Buck Brumlow helped Georgia capture the Linger Longer Invitational; and former Canes runner Bill Archer produced a top-three showing in a 1500-meter race at home. LAUREN McELHANEY — University of West Georgia (So., Cartersville HS) … appeared defensively in both games of last Saturday’s home doubleheader with Delta State and was 0-for-1 in her only plate appearance. LOGAN MARTIN — Sewanee - University of the South (Jr., Cartersville HS) … tossed a complete game Sunday but was saddled with the pitching loss as the Tigers fell to Hendrix College (Arkansas) 4-2. The right-hander yielded four runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks. He fanned eleven. MASON McBEE — Coastal Alabama South (Fr., Cartersville HS) … in a two inning relief appearance Saturday against Coastal Alabama East, McBee allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk in the fifth and sixth innings. MOSBY — Albany Patroons - The Basketball League; (Cartersville HS) … In helping Albany to a 123-93 home win last Friday over Connecticut, Mosby produced a 15-point, 13-rebound double-double. COLLEGE BASKETBALL JUSTICE HAYES — South Georgia Tech (So., Cass HS) .. contributed six points, one rebound and one block in 10 minutes, but South Georgia Tech fell 88-80 to South Plains College in the opening round of the NJCAA national championship March 15 in Hutchinson, Kansas. GOLF BUCK BRUMLOW — University of Georgia (Fr., Cartersville HS) … Brumlow overcame a rough first round to post back-to-back 1-under 71s as the Bulldogs won the Linger Longer Invitational at Great Waters Golf Course in Eatonton. Georgia shot an 836 over three rounds March 20-22 to finish ahead of 14 other schools, including edging runner-up Vanderbilt by four strokes after entering the day tied for the lead. No. 10 Georgia was one of eight ranked teams in the event, including No. 6 Vandy and No. 4 North Carolina. After an 11-over 83 in the opening round, Brumlow rebounded nicely to place tied for 53rd overall out of 90 competitors. His Round 2 showing didn't factor into the team score, as the talented Bulldogs managed four other scores between 68-70. However, Brumlow's final round 71 tied him for second on the team. BLANE DAVIS — Georgia College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … playing as an independent and not counting among the team scores for the Bobcats, Davis shot rounds of 74-81-74 — 229 and placed 70th at the Bobcat Invitational Monday and Tuesday. The tournament, hosted by Georgia College, was played at the Par-70, 6730 yard Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee. Barry University won the 15-team tournament by six shots over Lander University. The host Bobcats were eleventh. The next tournament for Georgia College is the UNG Bracket Challenge April 4-5 at Chimney Oaks. TENNIS HOUSTON MEDLOCK — Piedmont College (Sr., Adairsville HS) … won his lone singles match and split his two doubles matches, as Piedmont finished 2-1 on the week. In a 6-3 win over Berry, the former Adairsville standout rallied for a thrilling 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory. He also paired with Alberto Nunez for an 8-5 triumph on Line 1 doubles. In a 5-2 defeat against Southern Wesleyan, Medlock and Nunez dropped a 6-4 decision. EMILY SURCEY — Arkansas State University (Fr., Cass HS) … Surcey and her Line 3 doubles partner, Hunter Roper, earned wins in road Sun Belt Conference matchups with Louisiana last Saturday and Louisiana-Monroe Sunday. The duo picked up 6-1 and 6-3 victories, respectively. However, Surcey came up short in her Line 2 singles matches, and as a team, the Red Wolves fell in both meetings. CHRISTY TURNER — Coppin State University (Sr., Woodland HS) … Turner and the Eagles dropped a trio of matchups last week in the MEAC Roundup in Cary, North Carolina. Coppin State fell to North Carolina Central (7-0, last Thursday), South Carolina State (6-1, last Friday) and Norfolk State (6-1, Saturday). Turner went 0-3 in both singles and doubles action, with her most competitive match being a 6-4, 7-5 defeat in Line 3 singles action against Norfolk State. BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont College (So., Woodland HS) … VanOrder went 3-0 overall, with a pair of singles wins and a doubles victory, across Piedmont's trio of home matchups last week. The southpaw emerged with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win in Line 2 singles play against Berry. He followed it up with a 7-5, 6-4 result on Line 2 versus Southern Wesleyan. In a 9-0 blowout victory over Johnson and Wales, VanOrder teamed with Kody Dills in an 8-0 rout on Line 2 doubles. TRACK AND FIELD BILL ARCHER — University of Montevallo (Fr., Cartersville HS) … Competing in the Falcon Track and Field Classic at home, Archer placed third overall in the men's 1500-meter race, with a time of 4 minutes, 6.70 seconds. Archer finished first among the Montevallo competitors in the 28-person event. The Cartersville High School gymnastics team won a four-way meet in the Class 5A division Monday at The Lovett School in Atlanta, defeating the host Lions by almost 13 points. The victory came for the Canes in their third meet of the season. Sophomore Karley Garrison placed first in All-Around with a score of 33.5. She was first in bars and beam, scoring 8.25 and 8.2. Garrison placed second in floor exercise (8.6) and vault (8.45). Junior Jayla Byrd was fourth in All-Around with a score of 28.95. She was first in vault with an 8.5. Byrd placed third in bars with a 7.35. Junior Anaston Wilson was fifth in All-Around with a score of 27.55. Wilson was third in vault with an 8.4. Next on the schedule for the Cartersville team is a home meet at the Cartersville Twisters facility Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

The Georgia Highlands Chargers started the 2022 season with sixteen straight wins before dropping back-to-back games at the end of February to Wabash Valley. Since those losses, GHC has now reeled off nine straight again including Tuesday’s conference opening win at home over Andrew College, 17-5. David Smith hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to power the Chargers past the Tigers. He finished the day 4-for-6 with nine RBIs and stole a base. Mick Moody homered and doubled with a walk and four RBIs. Parker Poteet finished with two hits including a home run and two RBIs. Max Kops also contributed two hits with one RBI. Jacob Ryan (6.1 IP, 5R, 3ER, 9H, 1BB, 6K) earned the pitching victory for Georgia Highlands and recorded six strikeouts. Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (1 IP, 0R, 2K) and Zachary Murray (0.2 IP, 0R, 0H, 1BB, 2K) pitched in relief for the Chargers. Georgia Highlands (25-2, 1-0 GCAA) finishes up a four game stretch against Andrew College with three games Friday and Saturday in Cuthbert. SOFTBALL ROANE STATE 6, GEORGIA HIGHLANDS 5 The Georgia Highlands softball team dropped a 6-5 decision Tuesday afternoon at Roane State CC. The Chargers fell behind 3-0 early but had cut the lead to 5-3 through four innings. Roane State added a run in the fifth and it proved to be the winning margin. Georgia Highlands added single runs in each of the final two innings but came up one run short. Kyndal Brown had two hits for GHC. Hailey Cronic homered in the third inning. Madison Dennis, Bradey Tharp, and Haley Overton had the other Chargers’ hits. Gracee Ellis (6 IP, 6R, 2ER, 11H, 0BB, 4K) suffered the pitching loss despite surrendering only two earned runs. Georgia Highlands (7-19) begins conference play Friday with a doubleheader at South Georgia State and will continue GCAA play Saturday in a doubleheader at Abraham Baldwin.

The Cass boys soccer team scored took a 2-0 lead in the opening half Tuesday night and matched a pair of goals with the host Ringgold Tigers in the second half for a 4-2 non-region road win. Christian Villella scored a pair of goals and had one assist for the Colonels. Ricky Le and Xavi Pineda produced the other two Cass goals. Camden Hillhouse added one assist. Cass (9-5-1, 2-2) hosts Woodland Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Cass girls (3-9-2) will host the Woodland Lady Cats in a 5:30 p.m. kickoff. The Lady Colonels played Ringgold to a scoreless draw this past Tuesday night in Catoosa County.
