The Adairsville girls soccer team evened its Region 6-AAA record and earned its sixth win of the year with a 3-1 win Thursday night at Sonoraville. Emma Collins, Elle Causby, and Megan Hardin each had early first half goals to give the Lady Tigers a 3-0 lead at the intermission. Hardin assisted on the Causby goal in the game’s 8th minute and Causby returned the favor ten minutes later. The Collins goal came off a corner kick in the 6th minute. The loss dropped Sonoraville to 2-6 on the season and 1-1 in region play. Adairsville (6-2-1, 2-2) travels to Ringgold next Tuesday. SONORAVILLE 6, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 3 The home-standing Phoenix defeated the Adairsville boys Thursday night, 6-3, in Region 6-AAA action. Sonoraville improved to 4-4-2 overall and 2-0 in region games with the victory. Adairsville (4-7, 1-3) plays at Ringgold Tuesday in a 7 p.m. kickoff.

The Cass girls team finished first and the Cass boys were second Thursday at the Gordon Central High School quad meet in Calhoun. In total, Cass athletes won 12 different events and three relays. The Lady Colonels scored 87 points to outscore runner-up Sonoraville by 16 points. Armuchee was third with 53 points followed by Gordon Central with 42. In the boys meet, Sonoraville scored 113 points to outdistance Cass (86), Gordon Central (40), and Armuchee (30). The attached file includes all individual results.

The Cartersville girls and boys tennis teams split matches Thursday afternoon with the visiting Model Blue Devils at Dellinger Park. The Lady Canes earned a 3-2 victory while the Cartersville boys lost by an identical 3-2 final score. Adairsville pitchers Brenden Carroll and Peyton Bowen combined to limit Cass to five hits and one earned run Thursday evening as the visiting Tigers beat the Colonels, 6-2. Adairsville led 5-1 in the second inning and both teams added single runs in the fifth inning. The Tigers out hit the Colonels ten to five. Peyton Bowen paced the Adairsville offense with three hits including a double. Tyler Driggers had two hits and two RBIs. Chris Roper followed with a pair of hits including a double and one RBI. Brenden Carroll (2 RBIs), Braden Powell, and Grayson Belcher added one hit apiece. Dawson Craig had one RBI for the Tigers. Bentley Markley had three of the Colonels’ five hits. Wesley Collins and Carson Hill added one hit each. Jesiel Moctezuma drove in a run for Cass with a fielder’s choice. Carroll (5.1 IP, 2R, 1ER, 3H, 4BB, 4K) started on the mound for Adairsville and worked into the sixth inning. Bowen (1.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, 1K) retired the final five outs for the Tigers. Cayden Roberts (2 IP, 4R, 1ER, 5H, 2BB) was tagged with the pitching loss for Cass. Conner Jenkins (3 IP, 1ER, 3H, 4K) and Hayden Cole (2 IP, 0R, 2H, 4K) pitched in relief for the Colonels. Adairsville improved to 5-4 and is scheduled to host North Murray March 18. Cass (1-10) will host Sonoraville Friday at 5:30 p.m.

The North Cobb Warriors produced 15 hits Wednesday night at LakePoint on their way to a 12-1 win over the Woodland Wildcats. North Cobb led 5-0 early and added to their advantage with two runs in the sixth inning and five more in the seventh. Woodland scored its run in the bottom of the third inning to make the score 5-1 at the time. Jakiyon Porter had an RBI single that scored Chase Carson after he had singled to open the frame. Mason Williams had the Wildcats other two hits in the game. Woodland starting pitcher Ayden Ray (3.2 IP, 5R, 3ER, 7H, 3BB, 5K) suffered the loss. Coby Barrett (2.1 IP, 2ER, 4H, 1BB) and Noah Herring (1 IP, 5ER, 4H, 2BB, 2K) pitched in relief for the Wildcats. North Cobb improved to 9-1 with the victory. Woodland (6-5) is scheduled to host East Paulding Friday at 5:55 p.m.

The Purple Hurricanes gave up the lead late Wednesday night to visiting Ringgold at LakePoint and managed only three hits in the game but Cartersville took advantage of two walks and a pair of errors in the bottom of the seventh to sneak out a 5-4 non-region win over the Tigers. Ringgold scored a single run in the top of the first and maintained that lead until the Canes scored three times in the bottom of the fifth. Starting pitchers Ross Norman of Ringgold and Ryan Johnson of Cartersville kept their opponents off balance in the early going. Norman (4.2 IP, 3R, 0ER, 3H, 5BB, 7K) struck out seven and Johnson (5 IP, 1ER, 2H, 2BB, 6K) fanned six. Geoffrey Gore (1.2 IP, 3ER, 1H, 3BB, 3K) worked into the seventh inning for the Canes with Collin Eaton (0.1 IP, 1BB, 1K) picking up the win by retiring the final out. Cartersville grabbed a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning with just two hits. Harrison Childers and Miles Owen singled to start the frame before Blake Sutton reached on an error to load the bases. Childers was cut down at home plate trying to score on a wild pitch but Owen scored to make it 1-1 on an ensuing wild pitch. After Curt Bonner and Elliott Eastin both walked, Caleb Daniel reached on a ground ball to score Sutton. Drew Rothschild then drew the third walk of the inning to force in Cartersville’s third run. The Tigers took a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh on just one base hit. A hit batsman and four walks in the inning gave Ringgold the lead prior to the Purple Hurricanes’ comeback. Bonner reached on a ground ball error to start the Canes’ half of the seventh inning. That was followed by consecutive walks to Eastin and Rothschild to load the bases. Hank Smith grounded into a fielder’s choice that drove in a run making the score 4-4 and then Eastin scored the game winning run when Childers’ grounder was misplayed by the Tigers’ shortstop. Ringgold’s loss drops the Tigers to 3-7 on the season. Cartersville (7-2) plays at Harrison Friday at 5:55 p.m.

Georgia Highlands dropped a softball doubleheader Tuesday at Chattanooga State falling 5-1 and 10-1. The host Lady Tigers outhit the Chargers 13 to 4 in the opener and 11 to 4 in the second game. Haley Overton had two hits including a double for Georgia Highlands in the opening loss. Malone Adridge had a hit and one RBI. Madison Dennis added one hit in the first game. In Game 2, Bradey Tharp contributed a double and scored a run. Annsley Todd finished with one hit and one RBI. Haley Robinson and Audrey Johnson added one hit each. Chattanooga State, ranked No. 9 in the NJCAA poll, improved to 19-3 on the season and completed a five-game season sweep of Georgia Highlands. The Chargers (6-16) are scheduled to host Cleveland State CC Thursday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Star’s Field.

The Woodland Wildcats grabbed a 5-0 lead through four innings Monday night and held on down the stretch to defeat visiting Coahulla Creek, 5-4. Woodland scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run triple by Ayden Ray. The Wildcats later added three more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Julian Wright and an RBI single by Jacob Gravett. The Colts made it interesting late with two runs in the fifth inning on a pair of hits and two Woodland defensive miscues. They then narrowed the margin to 5-4 on a Tanner Headrick two-RBI double in the top of the seventh with one out. Woodland pitcher Conner Stermer (1 IP, 2ER, 1H, 2BB, 2K) was able to end the late Coahulla Creek rally with a strikeout and a groundout to close out the final inning. Wright (5 IP, 2R, 0ER, 4H, 0BB, 6K) started on the mound for the Wildcats and picked up the pitching win. Rowan Billings (1 IP, 0R, 0H, 0BB, 2K) recorded three outs in the sixth inning. Headrick had three hits and three RBIs for Coahulla Creek (3-5). For Woodland, Ray finished with three hits and two RBIs. Wright had two hits with two RBIs. Jakiyon Porter also contributed two hits. Three runs early and three runs late were enough to lift the Dalton Catamounts past the visiting Cass Colonels Monday night, 6-1. Dalton took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and added insurance with three runs in the sixth to secure the win. Cass scored a run in the top of the second on a Todd Gaddy RBI single to narrow the margin to 3-1 at the time. Starting pitcher Carson Hill (5 IP, 3R, 0ER, 4H, 2BB, 4K) was tagged with the pitching loss despite not allowing an earned run. He struck out four. Chase Botts (0.1 IP, 3ER, 3H, 2BB) and Devan Hutchinson (0.2 IP, 0R, 1H) both pitched in relief for the Colonels. Cayden Roberts had two hits for Cass. Chase Botts and Andrew Middleton also added base hits. The Catamounts improved to 5-2 with their win. Cass (1-9) host Adairsville Thursday and Sonoraville Friday. Both games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. starts.

PRO BASKETBALL ASHTON HAGANS — Raptors 905, NBA G League; Cartersville native; Newton HS) … Hagans started and played 32 minutes in a 125-118 road loss Sunday at the Maine Celtics. He posted 15 points, six assists, four steals and three rebounds in the defeat. COLLEGE BASKETBALL BRAXTON BENHAM — Berry College (Fr., Cass HS) … saw nine minutes of action in Berry's opening-round game in the NCAA Division-III tournament. He finished with two points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal in a 91-79 season-ending loss to Wabash last Friday in Atlanta. JUSTICE HAYES — South Georgia Tech (So., Cass HS) … Hayes and the Jets survived an overtime thriller with Georgia Highlands to win the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association tournament title. He scored just one total point in the semifinals (78-70 win last Friday over South Georgia at home) and finals (87-84 OT victory Saturday at GHC), but it was a big point. With 31 seconds to go in regulation during the championship, Hayes hit the second of two free throws to give South Georgia Tech a 79-74 lead. It proved vital, as the Chargers scored five points in 11 seconds to send the game to an extra session before the Jets emerged victorious. South Georgia Tech will face South Plains College in the first round of the NJCAA national championship at 11 a.m. Eastern March 15 in Hutchinson, Kansas. T.J. HORTON — Georgia Highlands College (Fr., Cartersville HS) … saw time but didn't record any counting stats in the championship game setback. He did manage to post four points and three rebounds in an 85-77 semifinal victory over Albany Tech last Friday at home. TENNIS HOUSTON MEDLOCK — Piedmont College (Sr., Adairsville HS) … won both sets of his Line 5 singles match by identical 6-2 final scores but fell 8-6 in Line 1 doubles action during a 6-3 team win over Pfeiffer Sunday at home. EMILY SURCEY — Arkansas State University (Fr., Cass HS) … did all she could to try to carry Arkansas State to victory in a Sun Belt Conference matchup against Texas State last Friday at home. The former Colonels star produced the Red Wolves' lone singles win — a breezy 6-2, 6-1 match on Line 3. She also teamed with Rebecca Brody for a 6-2 Line 3 doubles triumph. Arkansas State also won on Line 1 doubles to secure the team point, but it wasn't enough in a 5-2 defeat. BRYCE VAN ORDER — Piedmont College (So., Woodland HS) … rallied for a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 win on Line 2 singles in the victory over Pfeiffer. TRACK AND FIELD BILL ARCHER — University of Montevallo (Fr., Cartersville HS) … In opening up his outdoor track and field season, Archer placed 19th in the 5000-meter run during the Icebreaker Duals this past Saturday at Berry. SOFTBALL BELLA CARNES — Georgia College (So., Woodland HS) … made a start in right field and had a sacrifice hit in the Bobcats’ 10-1 loss Saturday at Lander University. Georgia College dropped all three Peach Belt Conference games over the weekend series and slipped to 8-13 on the season. The Bobcats host Young Harris Friday and Saturday in another three game conference series. MORGAN COOPER — Columbus State University (Fr., Woodland HS) … appeared as a pinch hitter Sunday in the Cougars’ only loss during a three-game Peach Belt Conference series at home against 9th-ranked North Georgia. CSU (9-9, 2-1) plays Mississippi College Wednesday in Mobile before traveling to St. Augustine for a three-game conference series with Flagler College Saturday and Sunday. SADYE JOHNSON — University of North Georgia (Fr., Adairsville HS) … started the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Columbus State going 0-for-1 with two walks at the plate. UNG (15-8, 1-2) hosts a doubleheader with Alabama-Huntsville Wednesday and entertains a three-game Peach Belt Conference series with Augusta University Friday and Saturday. HANNAH TODD — University of Houston (Grad Student, Cartersville HS) … made pitching appearances in four of five Cougars’ games this past weekend as Houston went 3-2 at the Boyd Gaming Classic in Las Vegas. In a start Friday, Todd allowed only one, unearned run on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts but received no decision. The Cougars went on, however, to knock off 7th-ranked Washington 5-4. The right-hander retired the only batter she faced Saturday in the final inning of an 11-7 win over New Mexico State and worked a scoreless inning of relief in a 10-4 loss to Washington. Sunday, Todd again did not allow an earned run in a 2-2/3 innings start. She allowed three unearned runs on three hits and two walks during a 5-0 loss to UNLV. Houston (9-11) hosts a doubleheader Friday with Boise State and a three-game series Friday and Saturday with Northwestern State. ALEXA VARNER — Shorter University (So., Adairsville HS) … made a start at second base Saturday in a 2-1 extra inning home loss to West Alabama. Varner was 0-for-3 at the plate but had four assists and a putout defensively. Shorter lost all three games in the weekend conference series. The Hawks (4-17, 1-8 Gulf South Conference) plays a three game conference series at West Georgia Friday and Saturday. BASEBALL JAKE GOOCH — Central Alabama CC (So., Cartersville HS) … went 4-for-7 with a solo home run and four RBIs in a doubleheader last Thursday at Lurleen B. Wallace CC. The Trojans (8-9) have a home-and-home, four-game series with Shelton State Thursday and Saturday. LOGAN MARTIN — Sewanee - University of the South (Jr., Cartersville HS) … made a seven inning start Saturday but did not receive a decision as the Tigers fell 4-3 at Birmingham-Southern College. Martin gave up three earned runs on seven hits, two walks (one intentional), and one hit batsman. He struck out nine of the 30 batters he faced. Sewanee (2-8) lost all three games in the series at 3rd-ranked Birmingham-Southern. The Tigers are scheduled to play six games Thursday through the following Tuesday at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida. MASON McBEE — Coastal Alabama - South CC (Fr., Cartersville HS) … earned a save last Friday by retiring the final five outs of a 7-6 win at Wallace State-Hanceville CC. McBee allowed three hits in the scoreless appearance and struck out one facing ten batters. The Sun Chiefs (7-9-1) have a four-game, home-and-home series with Wallace State-Dothan Thursday and Saturday. SCOTTY SMITH — Covenant College (Fr., Woodland HS) … the right hand pitcher was inserted in the seventh inning Friday of an eventual 8-4 loss to Ferrum College (Virginia) in a game played at the Tennessee Smokies Stadium in Kodak, Tennessee. Smith entered with his team trailing 7-1 and retired the final five outs. He walked one and yielded one unearned run. The Scots (5-6) travel to Bob Jones University (South Carolina) for a three-game series Friday and Saturday. STEVEN SPELL — Young Harris College (Jr., Cass HS) … starting at third base, Spell was 2-for-8 at the plate as the Mountain Lions completed a three-game conference series sweep at Georgia College. He had a double, three walks, and scored two runs during the series. Young Harris (13-5, 3-0 Peach Belt Conference) hosts Carson-Newman Tuesday and returns to conference play Saturday and Sunday in a three-game series at Augusta University. JORDAN WILKIE — Augusta University (Jr., Cartersville HS) … went 1-for-8 with a walk and a sacrifice in three losses during a Peach Belt Conference series at Flagler College last weekend. ZACH WILSON — Penn State-Greater Allegheny CC (So., Woodland HS) … made an eighth inning pinch hitting appearance and was inserted defensively at first base Saturday during a 10-8 loss to CC of Allegheny County.
