Cartersville High School’s Canes Rifles hosted the Etowah at American Legion’s Carl Boyd Post 42 in their first home match of the season earlier this week. Cartersville edged Etowah in a back and forth rifle match 1020 to 1007. The match pitted Area 10’s top two juniors against one another. Etowah led the Canes through the first two series, but the Canes’ team captain, Angelina Christ – the second ranked junior in Area 10 – came through with a strong kneeling score that pulled her team ahead in the end. Christ scored her personal best match score and the Canes’ highest ever match score of 273 with 10 bullseyes. That effort topped Etowah’s top-ranked junior, Zachary Mauriello, who scored a 271 with 5 bullseyes, for the matches’ second highest score. Etowah’s returning sophomore, Nolin Linenkugel, had the third highest score of the match at 268 while Cartersville freshmen, Caleb Adams and Luis Rangel, along with returning senior, Jacob Herron, finished in 4th, 5th, and 6th places with scores of 255 and 246. Etowah senior, Hunter Self was 7th with a 242, and Canes freshman, Maria Velasquez – in her very first match - finished in 8th place with a 240. Etowah sophomore, Benjamin Bogart, and freshman, Carson Mierzejewski, rounded out the match with a 226 and 213 respectively. The Canes move into 3rd place in Area 10 with their win. They travel to Sonoraville on Thursday, and then host powerhouses Dalton and Lafayette next Tuesday and Thursday at the American Legion Post 42 in Cartersville.

The Cass High School swim team defeated Southeast Whitfield Tuesday night at the Adairsville High School Swim Center, 114-77. The Cass girls outscored the visiting Raiders 64-29 and the Cass boys outdistanced Southeast 50-48. Complete results are listed below. Next for the Cass swim team is the Northwest Georgia Regional at Calhoun High School Friday and Saturday.

Saving arguably his best performance of the year for the final game of his rookie season, Jacksonville Jaguars’ quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw for 223 yards and a pair of touchdowns Sunday in a 26-11 home win over Indianapolis. Elsewhere Sunday, former Woodland High wrestling standout Kyle Gollhofer made his varsity mat debut for the University of Northern Iowa in a dual meet at South Dakota State. On the hardwoods this past week, Cass High products Justice Hayes at South Georgia Tech and Londaisha Smith at Alderson Broaddus University helped their teams to wins. NFL TREVOR LAWRENCE — Jacksonville Jaguars (Rookie season; Cartersville HS) … the former Clemson University and Cartersville High signal caller had his most complete performance of the season Sunday as Jacksonville shocked visiting Indianapolis 26-11 in both teams season finale’. The Colts, playing for their playoff lives, had plenty of motivation Sunday but the 22-year-old and overall first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft led the Jaguars to an unexpected upset win. The Jaguars scored an opening drive touchdown for just the second time all season and Jacksonville never trailed. Lawrence completed eight of eight passes on that opening drive which was capped with a two-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Laquon Treadwell. He later added a second touchdown pass to Marvin Jones late in the third quarter. Lawrence, who completed 72 percent of his passes (23-for-32) amassed 223 yards through the air with a passer efficiency rating of 111.8. He also added 17 rushing yards on ten attempts. Overall, Lawrence led Jacksonville to scores on six of their nine offensive drives and the Jaguars collected their fourth consecutive win at home over the Colts even though they are just 5-21 at home against all other teams during that stretch. Lawrence now heads into the off-season awaiting the hiring of a new Jags’ head coach. He finished his rookie campaign 359-for-602 passing for 3,641 yards and 12 touchdowns. He threw 17 interceptions and finished the year with a 71.9 passer efficiency rating. He rushed for 334 yards on 73 attempts and finished with two rushing touchdowns as the Jaguars finished the season with a 3-14 record. MILLER FORRISTALL (Cleveland Browns, Rookie season, Cartersville HS) ... inked a reserves/future contract Monday with the Cleveland Browns, meaning the former Alabama tight end can't be poached by another franchise during the offseason. After going undrafted, Forristall signed with the Tennessee Titans. He landed on Tennessee's practice squad before being cut in early September. Later that month, the Cartersville High product joined the Browns practice squad. The 23-year-old saw action in two regular-season games this year. SWIMMING MALLORY COOK — University of Montevallo (Fr., Adairsville HS) … placed third in the 200 yard freestyle (2:11.70), fourth in the 200 yard butterfly (2:37.00), fifth in the 100 yard butterfly (1:07.36), and was the butterfly leg of her team’s 200 yard medley relay that placed fourth as the Falcons hosted Delta State in a 181-77 loss. Montevallo swims next in Arkadelphia, Arkansas on Friday at Henderson State and Saturday at Ouachita Baptist. WRESTLING KYLE GOLLHOFER — University of Northern Iowa (R-Fr., Woodland HS) … competing at 125-pounds Sunday in his first varsity bout at South Dakota State, Gollhofer lost a 4-3 decision in the Panthers’ 27-13 loss. Northern Iowa (1-5) returns to action Friday at Northern Colorado. JAHVAR LEWIS — Midway University (Jr., Woodland HS) … at the NWCA National Duals this past week in Louisville, Kentucky Lewis finished 2-1 competing at 133-pounds, but his team finished 0-3. He won a 2-1 decision in the Eagles’ 28-17 loss to 10th-ranked Marian University. He won by forfeit in his team’s 30-24 loss to 17th-ranked Thomas More University and lost a 6-3 bout in Midway’s 46-3 loss to No. 1-ranked Grand View University. The Eagles return to the mats Saturday at the Central Baptist College Invitational in Conway, Arkansas. JABRIL WILLIAMS — Midway University (Fr., Cartersville HS) … competing at 174-pounds, Williams won by pin in a 40-9 Eagles’ victory over Kentucky Wesleyan last Tuesday. He then lost by tech fall in a 46-3 loss to Grand View University Thursday at the NWCA National Duals and lost his bout in Midway’s loss to Marian University. The Eagles travel to Conway, Arkansas Saturday for the Central Baptist College Invitational. BASKETBALL JUSTICE HAYES — South Georgia Tech (So., Cass HS) … scored six points with one assist and one steal in the Jets’ 86-85 home win over South Georgia CC last Thursday. Saturday, Hayes scored two points with one rebound and one assist in a 62-61 loss at Southern Crescent Tech. The Cass girls and the Cartersville boys came away with wins Tuesday night as the two schools opened Region 7-AAAAA play at the Storm Center at Cartersville High School. The 8th-ranked Lady Colonels cruised to a 66-27 win in the opener and it was the Cartersville boys who survived five lead changes in the fourth quarter to escape with a 64-61 victory. In other action Tuesday night, Blessed Trinity won a pair of games at Woodland while the Adairsville girls and boys dropped region games in Chatsworth at North Murray. CASS GIRLS 66, CARTERSVILLE 27 The Lady Colonels extended their current winning streak to 14 games and cruised to an easy 66-27 win Tuesday night at Cartersville. Cass led 16-3 after the opening eight minutes; 41-12 at halftime; and carried a 58-18 lead into the fourth quarter. Miya Winston led the Lady Colonels with 18 points and seven steals. Claire Davis finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Haley Johnson scored eight points, dished four assists, and grabbed five rebounds. Keara McDaniel contributed six points for Cass. Mikaela Jackson, Zion Hayes, and Reese Howard scored four points each. Kiana McDaniel scored three while Justice Bennett, Olivia Woods, and Tamira Feanny added two points each. The two teams were knotted at 10 each after one quarter; the Canes led 29-26 at the intermission; and the Colonels carried a 46-44 lead into the final quarter in the back-and-forth contest. Romo Pace led the Canes with 17 points. Kam Callahan followed with 16 and Luke Gambill scored 10. Jaden Scott contributed six points. Monty Tolbert and Jamauri Brice chipped in with five points each. Chaz Henderson and Ked Chatmon had two points each and Kaden Scott added one for Cartersville Sacovie White led the Colonels with 24 points. Evie Bilson and Maura Ryan led the Blessed Trinity scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Reagan Weightman scored six points for the Lady Cats and Abigail Taylor finished with five. Blessed Trinity improved to 7-9 on the season and 1-0 in Region 7-AAAAA. Woodland (2-12, 0-1) plays at Calhoun Friday night at 6 p.m. BLESSED TRINITY 90, WOODLAND BOYS 43 The Blessed Trinity boys scored the game’s first 16 points and led 27-7 after one quarter Tuesday night on their way to a 90-43 win at Woodland. The Titans led 55-19 at halftime and built a 73-26 advantage after three quarters. Ty Harpring and Jack Whalen led five Blessed Trinity players in double figure scoring with 15 points each. K.J. Rogers finished with 21 points for Woodland. Jayden Hames finished with eight for the Wildcats. Blessed Trinity evened its season record at 8-8 and started region play 1-0. Woodland (5-8, 0-1) plays at Calhoun Friday at 7:30 p.m. and will host Pepperell Saturday at 6:30 p.m. NORTH MURRAY 39, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 27 The Lady Tigers struggled scoring points in the second half Tuesday night at North Murray and fell to the Lady Mountaineers 39-27. The game was tied 18-18 at halftime but Adairsville was outscored 21-9 in the second half as North Murray earned its first region win of the season. Ava Robinette scored 14 points and Baliegh Winkler added 13 to lead North Murray (5-11, 1-7). Naxyria Roberts paced Adairsville with 11 points. Autumn Henderson added five. Adairsville (9-6, 3-5) hosts East Paulding Saturday night at 6 p.m. and will return to Region 6-AAA action next Tuesday at 6 p.m. at home against Ringgold. NORTH MURRAY 68, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 50 Adairsville’s Hayden Poarch made seven three-pointers and finished with a game-high 25 points Tuesday night, but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers lost at North Murray 68-50. North Murray led 30-22 at halftime and maintained a 50-42 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Judson Petty led North Murray (7-11, 4-5) with 21 points. Tre Mitchell added 12 points for the Tigers in their loss. Adairsville (8-6, 5-3) hosts East Paulding Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers travel to Darlington Monday for a 3 p.m. start and host Ringgold next Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Adairsville High School swim teams were dominant Saturday in winning the Bartow County Swimming Championships hosted by the Tigers at the Adairsville Swim Center. The Adairsville boys won each relay and individual event on the day while the Lady Tigers won first place in every event except two. Cartersville’s Katerina Conley won the 200-yard individual medley and Woodland’s Emma Segars took the 100-yard breast stroke to prevent a clean sweep. Adairsville’s Andy Barnett, Cooper Brown, Brooklyn Chancey, Gabriel Greenway, and Sam Pasley all won a pair of individual events each. Brayden Rizer, Josie Siniard, and Landon Smrcina of the Tigers claimed one event title apiece. Overall, Adairsville won the combined team title with 947 points. Woodland (634) was second followed by Cass (443) and Cartersville (420). The results were similar when divided by gender. The Adairsville girls (436) topped Woodland (317), Cartersville (267), and Cass (208) while the Adairsville boys (511) finished ahead of Woodland (317), Cass (235), and Cartersville (153). In their final tune-up before Region 7-AAAAA play begins Tuesday night, the Cartersville Purple Hurricanes defeated visiting Cedartown Saturday night at The Storm Center 70-57. The Canes broke open a close game in the third quarter by doubling up the Bulldogs in the period 24-12. The score was tied 13-13 after one quarter and 28-28 at halftime before Cartersville took control. Kam Callahan led the Hurricanes with 28 points including six made three-pointers. Romo Pace finished with 17 points and Luke Gambill added 12 for Cartersville. M.J. Holiday scored a game-high 30 points for Cedartown (4-7) but was limited to only nine points in the second half. Cartersville (7-4) hosts Cass Tuesday night. ROSWELL 47, CASS 46 The visiting Hornets made a three-point shot with just 13 seconds remaining to regain the lead and hold off Cass Saturday evening 47-46. The Colonels’ Devin Henderson, who finished with 11 points, had a last second shot but failed to connect. Cass led 11-7 after one period and 18-17 at halftime, but Roswell took a 35-26 lead heading into the final eight minutes. The game was knotted at 38-all midway through the fourth quarter. Jayden Foster led Cass with 15 points. Jackson Hale added nine in the loss, Quinton Partee paced Roswell (11-5) with 19 points. Jackson Kemp added 15 for the Hornets. Cass (6-8) opens Region 7-AAAAA action Tuesday night at Cartersville in a 7:30 p.m. start preceded by the two schools’ girls game at 6 p.m.

The Cass wrestling team won the Region 7-AAAAA Team Duals Championship Saturday with a 52-24 win over county rival Woodland in the title match. Cass defeated Calhoun in the semifinals 51-12 to reach the championship match. Calhoun ultimately finished third in the tournament, followed by Blessed Trinity, Cartersville, and HIram. Woodland defeated Blessed Trinity in the other region semifinal match. In the Colonels’ win over Calhoun seven of the ten Cass bout wins were by pin and two by forfeit. Lee Camp (106), A.J. Piatt (113), Cole Hunt (126), Jake Crapps (132), Bryce Kresho (138), and Tyler McKnight (145), and Anthony Alcazar (heavyweight) each earned pins. William Buttram (220) also collected a bout victory while Abby Gentry (120) and Eli Doolittle (152) won by forfeit. In the finals, Woodland picked up wins by heavyweight Beau Jernigan and Caleb Henson (152) to go with forfeits collected by Colby Cochran (170) and Charles Higdon (195). The Colonels’ wins in the championship match included Camp (106), Piatt (113), Hunt (126), Crapps (132), Kresho (138), Doolittle (145), Kriecg Roe (160), Zach McKnight (182), and William Buttram (220). Gentry (120) picked up a victory by forfeit. Cartersville finished fifth for the day just missing next weekend’s state preliminaries. The Hurricanes opened the tournament with losses to Blessed Trinity (46-32) and Calhoun (48-31), but finished fifth by defeating Hiram 42-39. Five Canes went unbeaten on the day. Grant Adams (106, 2-0), Eaiden Neal (113, 2-0), Talan Nix (132, 2-0), Giles Turner (138, 2-0), and Shadre Hurst (heavyweight, 1-0) finished the day with a clean slate. Both Cass and Woodland advance to the Class AAAAA State Preliminaries that begin next Saturday. The Colonels will host Northview with Mundy’s Mill and Veterans assigned to the same portion of the preliminary bracket. Woodland travels to Ware County where the Wildcats will square off in the first round against St. Pius X. Forest Park and Ware County are also in that portion of the Class AAAAA bracket. Also advancing from Region 7-AAAAA were Blessed Trinity and Calhoun. The Titans face Southwest DeKalb in next week’s first round while Calhoun will meet Stone Mountain. TIGERS PLACE FOURTH IN AREA IV-AAA The Adairsville Tigers’ wrestling team finished fourth Friday and Saturday at the Class AAA Area IV Team Duals Championships hosted by Rockmart High School. The host Yellow Jackets came away as the Area champions followed by runner-up Westminster, Greater Atlanta Christian, and Adairsville. The Tigers advance to the Class AAA State Preliminaries next Saturday at Pike County in Zebulon. Adairsville will square off against the host Pirates in the opening round. Coahulla Creek and Hart County are also assigned to that same portion of the Class AAA bracket.

When Texas A&M pulled out of the Gator Bowl due to COVID-19 issues, it appeared as though a stellar season for Wake Forest and its Cartersville contingent had come to an unceremonious end. However, Rutgers stepped up to fill in as a replacement team. The Demon Deacons took advantage of the drop off in caliber of opponent (The Aggies handed top-ranked Alabama its only loss to date, while the Scarlet Knights finished 5-7 on the season.) to cruise to a 38-10 victory. Only one of the three former Cartersville High standouts on the roster saw action, with freshman Evan Slocum recording one tackle. Despite not playing, redshirt freshman Isaiah Chaney and redshirt sophomore JaCorey Johns will also go down as Gator Bowl champions. Elsewhere, Adairsville High product Nakiyah Washington stepped up in a pair of games for Piedmont to help the Lions claim a tournament championship last week near Chicago. PRO FOOTBALL Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville Jaguars; Cartersville) — Lawrence threw his first touchdown pass since Week 12 against Atlanta but also tossed three interceptions in a 50-10 loss Sunday at New England. He completed 17 of 27 pass attempts for 193 yards in a game that saw the Jacksonville offense run just 47 plays. Lawrence and the Jaguars will close out the regular season against the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at home. COLLEGE FOOTBALL Evan Slocum (Wake Forest Fr., Cartersville) — Slocum made one tackle during kickoff team coverage in the fourth quarter, as the Deacons routed Rutgers, 38-10, Friday at the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville. Slocum appeared in 10 games this season, accumulating 20 tackles with one pass break up. Wake Forest finished the year with an 11-3 record. BASKETBALL Jaylon Pugh (Furman Sr., Cartersville) — Pugh saw a total of 17 minutes off the Paladins bench in games last Wednesday and Saturday. In Wednesday’s home win over Samford, 81-49, the guard had two rebounds and a pair of assists. Saturday, during a 76-67 loss at VMI, he had one rebound. Furman (9-6, 1-1 Southern Conference) plays at UNC-Greensboro Wednesday night and hosts Mercer Saturday afternoon. Nakiyah Washington (Piedmont Jr., Adairsville) — Washington helped lead the Lions to a two-game sweep and tournament championship last Wednesday and Thursday at the Amy Hashbrook Memorial Tournament, just outside of Chicago. Washington scored 20 points, pulled down six rebounds, added five steals, blocked a shot and dished out two assists in an 85-63 win over Franklin College in the semifinals. She then poured in 18 points with four rebounds, one block and one steal as the Lions upset ninth-ranked DePauw University in overtime to take the title game. Piedmont (8-3, 2-1 USA South) returns to action Wednesday afternoon at home against Emory University. WRESTLING Kyle Gollhofer (Northern Iowa R-Fr., Woodland) — Gollhofer went 1-2 in the 125-pound division bracket of the Matmen Open last Wednesday and Thursday in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. He lost to Blake West of Northern Illinois in the first round. Gollhofer defeated Beau Bayless of Harvard in the wrestlebacks before falling to Brandon Seidman of Bucknell. The Woodland boys used a 23-point second quarter Friday night to build a 37-19 lead by halftime in an eventual 10-point win over visiting Unity Christian of Rome. The Wildcats led 50-33 after three quarters and held on for a 66-56 victory in their final tune-up before starting region play next week. K.J. Rogers led Woodland with 21 points. Oglethorpe girls raced to a 26-6 first quarter lead and never trailed in a 69-31 win over visiting Adairsville Friday night. The host Lady Warriors led 38-19 at halftime and held a 57-22 advantage after three quarters. Christen Collins led LFO with 27 points. Angel Simmons and Christina Collins both scored 16 for the Lady Warriors. Haley Stiles led Adairsville with eight points. LFO improved to 15-0 on the season and 7-0 in Region 6-AAA. Adairsville (9-5, 3-4) travels to North Murray for another region game Tuesday night at 6 p.m. LAKEVIEW-FORT OGLETHORPE 74, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 65 The Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe Warriors, ranked No. 10 in Class AAA, remained undefeated for the season Friday night with a 74-65 Region 6-AAA win over visiting Adairsville. LFO led 22-17 after eight minutes; 43-31 at the intermission; and 57-44 through three quarters on their way to a nine-point win. Jamichael Davis scored a game-high 31 points to lead LFO. Keenan Walker followed with 22 points and Brent Bowman added 14 for the Warriors (14-0, 7-0) T.J. Printup poured in 28 points to lead Adairsville. Hayden Poarch finished with 12 points and Tre Winters added 11 for the Tigers. Adairsville (8-5, 5-2) travels to North Murray Tuesday night. EXCEL CHRISTIAN GAME POSTPONED The Excel Christian Academy boys' game scheduled for Friday at Dalton's Christian Heritage was postponed.

The Woodland Wildcats dropped their first game of the new year Thursday night at home, falling to Allatoona 73-35. The visiting Buccaneers led 15-10 after one quarter and 31-22 at halftime before distancing themselves in the second half. Allatoona (8-5) led 56-31 heading into the final eight minutes. Jayden Hames scored 15 points to lead the Wildcats (4-7). K.J. Rogers finished with 14 points for Woodland. Woodland hosts Unity Christian of Rome Friday night with the girls game set to tip at 6 p.m.

T.J. Printup scored 28 points and Hayden Poarch added 18 to lead the Adairsville Tigers to a 71-46 Region 6-AAA home win Tuesday night over Murray County. Tre Mitchell added nine points for the Tigers. Following a close first quarter, Adairsville outscored the visiting Indians 17-5 in the second quarter to carry a 35-21 lead to the intermission. The Tigers extended that lead to 60-31 by the end of the third quarter. Avery Jones led Murray County with 10 points. Carson Weaver finished with eight while Eric Rosas and Tad Stone added seven points apiece for the Indians. Murray County fell to 9-5 overall and 3-3 in region play. MURRAY COUNTY 47, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 34 Ella Dotson scored 14 points and Mattie Nuckolls added 13 as visiting Murray County defeated the Adairsville girls Tuesday night, 47-34. The Lady Indians led 25-18 at halftime and built on their lead in the second half improving to 11-3 on the season and 5-1 in Region 6-AAA. Autumn Henderson led the Lady Tigers with nine points. Naxyria Roberts and Ya’Torrean Hale added seven points each. Adairsville (7-4, 3-3) plays at undefeated and 5th-ranked Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday night at 6 p.m.

Elite Stone Supply, in conjunction with WBHF and Bartow Sports Zone, presents the ELITE ATHLETES OF THE MONTH. Each month, local high schools are provided the opportunity to name an Elite Athlete of the Month from their varsity programs and present the information on their honoree through Bartow Sports Zone and on 100.3FM and AM1450, WBHF in Cartersville. The December 2021 Elite Athlete of the Month representing Adairsville High School is Brooklyn Chancey. A freshman standout on the Tigers’ swimming team, Chancey is the daughter of Dustin and Naomi Chancey. Chancey has already placed in several meets this season and competes in the 50 yard freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, and 200 yard medley relay. “Brooklyn is one of our hardest working swimmers,” noted Adairsville assistant swim coach Lance Hall. “She is off to a great start in her high school swim career.” Enrolled in Advanced Placement and Honors classes, Chancey would like to attend nursing school. Ricky Hawkins represents Woodland High School as the Wildcats’ December 2021 Elite Athlete of the Month. A junior and current boys captain on the Woodland swim team, Hawkins has been the top scoring boys swimmer in the majority of the team’s meets this season. His times have also steadily improved in each event. Woodland coaches credit Hawkins for not only holding himself accountable on a daily basis, but also holding his teammates to the same standard. Hawkins plans to continue his swim career in college and would like to pursue an engineering degree. He is the son of Diane and Rick Hawkins. The Cass High School Elite Athlete of the Month for December 2021 is Rylee Moore. A senior and captain on the Colonels’ football and competition cheerleading squads, Moore has been named a 2021 Georgia All Star Cheerleader. She helped lead her team to a top ten finish at the Class 5A State Championships. An amazing leader both on and off the mat, Moore’s positive attitude is infectious and radiates on the sidelines and on the competition floor. She is loved and respected by all her teammates and coaches. Also an outstanding student, Moore has a 101.74 GPA and is currently ranked third in her senior class. She is a Zell Miller Scholarship recipient, Georgia Certificate of Merit honoree, and a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, and National Spanish Honor Society. The daughter of Nicky and Tracey Moore, Rylee has already been accepted in the University of Georgia where she plans to pursue a degree in marine biology. The Elite Athlete of the Month for December 2021 at Cartersville High School is Jake Parker. A senior quarterback on this year’s Hurricanes football team, Parker was named Second Team All-Region 7-AAAAA, a NWGA Football Top 100 Player, and quarterback for the Georgia Elite Classic All Star Game. “Jake is an outstanding student-athlete,” said Canes’ head football coach Conor Foster. “His outstanding play and leadership with this year’s team helped lead us to an undefeated regular season.” Although the Canes fell to eventual state champion Warner Robins in the second round of the state playoffs, Cartersville was ranked No. 2 in the final state rankings.
