The Cass girls soccer team opened the 2020 regular season Tuesday night at home but came up short in a 4-3 non-region loss to Southeast Whitfield. Junior Michelle Escobar scored a pair of goals while classmate Leidi Toribio scored the other Lady Colonels' goal and added an assist. Fellow juniors Meli Reyes and Victoria Torres contributed one assist each. Cass (0-1) will look to bounce back Friday when the Lady Colonels travel to Dalton.

The Adairsville Tigers won a second round matchup at the Region 6-AAA Tournament at North Murray High School Tuesday night, defeating Coahulla Creek 57-34. T.J. Printup led Adairsville with 16 points. Tucker Deams followed with 10 and Savaun Henderson scored nine. William Longmire and Jaxon Welchel chipped in with six points each. Malachi Gardner posted five. Hayden Poarch scored four and Courtney Slocum added one point for the Tigers. Adairsville led 18-9 after the opening eight minutes and held a 33-17 advantage at halftime. The Tigers maintained a 43-27 lead through three quarters as they advanced with a 23-point win. Coahulla Creek, led by Barrett Barbre’s nine points, finished its season with a 9-16 record. Adairsville (11-14) advances to a quarterfinal round game against Murray County Thursday at 5:30 p.m. back at North Murray High School.

The Cass Colonels turned up the scoring power in the second and third quarters of Tuesday night’s Region 7-AAAAA quarterfinal game with Villa Rica at Kell High School and the result was a 62-57 win and a berth in the state tournament. Villa Rica led 18-12 after the opening eight minutes, but the Colonels outscored the Wildcats 22-11 in the second quarter and 14-8 in the third period to lead 48-37 heading into the fourth quarter. Zaylon Chaney scored 15 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to get the Cass offense rolling. Jordan Ford followed for the Colonels with 11 points. Jaquan Heard and C.J. Pipkin finished with nine each. Braxton Benham, who secured the win with game-sealing free throws with 4.5 seconds remaining, tossed in seven points and Zay Jackson added one point. Xavion Sparks paced Villa Rica with 23 points. Phillip Zachery was next for the Wildcats with 13. Villa Rica, who had beaten Cass twice during the regular season in close results, has its season come to a close with an 18-8 record. The Colonels (15-11) advance to Thursday’s region tournament semifinals at Carrollton High School where they will play the league’s top-seed and 4th-ranked Kell Longhorns (22-4) at 8:30 p.m. Kell eliminated Rome Tuesday night, 91-62. Tuesday’s win for Cass ensures the Colonels will qualify for the Class AAAAA state tournament regardless of their outcome in games Thursday and Friday. Those games will, however, determine seeding for Cass in the state playoffs. LADY COLONELS FALL TO VILLA RICA The Cass girls struggled offensively Tuesday night and fell to Villa Rica for the third time this season to have their season end at Kell High School in the Region 7-AAAAA quarterfinals. Villa Rica, who improved to 21-5 on the season, took a 15-10 lead after one quarter, led 31-17 at halftime, and extended their advantage to 41-23 after three quarters. The loss ends the Lady Colonels’ season with a 17-9 mark. “I’m very proud of the girls. We really grew as a team this year,” said a disappointed Cass head coach Burt Jackson following the game. “We just struggled with our shot tonight. Villa Rica hurt us on the boards and we turned the ball over too much tonight.” WOODLAND GIRLS FALL TO UNBEATEN KELL The Woodland Lady Cats had their season come to a close Tuesday night in a 59-32 Region 7-AAAAA quarterfinal game at Kell. The win by 2nd-ranked Kell keeps the Lady Longhorns unbeaten this season at 26-0. Jamiah Gregors, Crystal Henderson, and Jada Green led Kell with 16, 12, and 11 points, respectively. Kell led 11-6 after one quarter, 35-13 at the intermission, and 55-19 through three quarters. Jordan Thompson scored 12 to lead Woodland. Carli Clymer followed with 10 points. Gracie Styles chipped in four points. Ansley Evans, Abigail Taylor, and Callie Jones added two each. The Lady Cats finished the season with a 5-21 mark.

The Atlanta Falcons announced Monday that they are cutting ties with former Adairsville High and Clemson University star Vic Beasley. As a result, Beasley will become an unrestricted free agent March 18. Beasley led the NFL in sacks in the Falcons’ run to Super Bowl LI, but his production has not matched that success over the past three seasons. The Clemson All-American was the overall No. 8 pick in the first round of the NFL draft in 2015. He had eight sacks this past season for Atlanta as the Falcons started the year 1-7, finished 7-9, and missed the playoffs.

High school region tournament action got underway Monday for four of the local teams and the Cartersville girls and Woodland girls picked up wins to advance in their respective tournaments. The Adairsville girls and the Woodland boys lost their tournament openers and had their 2019-20 seasons come to a close. CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 51, LAGRANGE 46 Cio Seigler led Cartersville with 12 points while teammates Ariana Cochran and Campbell Rogers chipped in nine points each in a 51-46 win over LaGrange Monday night at Cedartown High School. The Lady Canes trailed 9-6 after one quarter and were behind 18-17 at halftime before taking a 36-29 lead by the end of the third quarter. Jakayah Draughn scored six points for Cartersville. Naijah Evans followed with five. Jada Cunningham and Jamiya Moore added four points each. The Cartersville girls (11-14) will play third-seeded Sandy Creek (14-10) Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at LaGrange High School in the Region 5-AAAA quarterfinals. The winner of Wednesday’s game will earn a spot in the state tournament. WOODLAND GIRLS 62, PAULDING COUNTY 45 The Lady Cats topped visiting Paulding County for the third time this season Monday night to earn a trip to Tuesday’s Region 7-AAAAA quarterfinals. The Lady Cats were led by a trio of players in double-figure scoring. Jordan Thompson paced Woodland with 17 points, including nine in the final period. Carli Clymer followed with 16 and Morgan Cooper scored 12. Gracie Styles chipped in eight more points in the victory. Woodland (5-20) will play at top-seeded Kell (25-0) Tuesday night at 6 p.m. HARALSON COUNTY 58, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 34 In an opening round Region 6-AAA Tournament game at North Murray High School in Chatsworth, the Lady Tigers fell to Haralson County Monday night, 58-34. The two teams were knotted at 8-8 after one quarter and Haralson County took a 27-19 lead to the intermission. The Lady Rebels then outscored Adairsville 19-2 in the third quarter to take control of the contest. Haralson County (7-18) advance to play fifth-seeded Calhoun Tuesday night at 7 p.m. back at North Murray. The season comes to a close for the Lady Tigers. They finish with a 5-21 mark. ROME 62, WOODLAND BOYS 58 In a close contest throughout, the visiting Wolves edged the Woodland boys Monday night, 62-58. Woodland led 16-12 after one quarter, but Rome held leads of 32-26 and 49-43 at the next two quarter stops on their way to a four-point victory although the host Wildcats had the game tied at 54-all with 2:47 remaining. Rome managed to convert enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the Wildcats. DiAnthony Heathcock finished with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks for the Wildcats in their loss. Harlin Morris contributed 13 points. Jaden Johnson added eight. Rome (5-19) advances to play at top-seeded Kell Tuesday night in the Region 7-AAAAA tournament quarterfinals. The Wildcats season closes with a 2-24 record.

The recent warmer temperatures had a Spring feel so it was only fitting that the 2020 college baseball and softball seasons got underway this past weekend for some of our local athletes from Bartow County. But don’t let the weather fool you. Basketball season continues as we roll into February and local players continue to shine on hardwood floors across the country and a pair of locals made marks with their track and field teams at indoor meets. BASEBALL Levi Ayers (Georgia Highlands So., Cartersville) — Ayers allowed four runs but none were earned in two-thirds of an inning Saturday in a 9-7 win over Chattanooga State. Ayers had two strikeouts, allowing two hits and a walk in his first action of the 2020 season. Clifton Dempsey (Toccoa Falls Sr., Cartersville) — Dempsey got off to a scorching hot start to his 2020 campaign, racking up seven hits across his first three games. The senior shortstop started off the season with two hits and two walks in a 16-5 loss to Truett McConnell Tuesday. His team bounced back to sweep a Saturday doubleheader with Johnson 11-9 and 13-4. In the opening win, Dempsey finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. In the second, Dempsey, who hit leadoff all three games, went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Carrington Evans (Augusta Jr., Cartersville) — Evans had a hit or a run scored in each of his team's first three games of the season. Unfortunately for Augusta, those all wound up being defeats — none of which actually ended in nine innings. Evans was 0-for-4 in Friday's opener, an 11-1, eight-inning loss to Alabama-Huntsville. He finished 2-for-5 with a run Saturday, but UAH rallied for a 3-1 win in 10 innings. In Saturday's finale, Evans ended up 0-for-3 but did cross the plate in a 9-4 defeat in seven innings. Lane Griffith (West Georgia Sr., Adairsville) — Griffith had a solid first game at the dish, but he went 0-for-2 in the final two tilts of West Georgia's season-opening series against Eckerd this past weekend. In a 12-5 win in Saturday's opener, Griffith was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. West Georgia won the nightcap 6-4 but dropped Sunday's finale 11-1. Harrison Osborn (Point Jr., Cartersville) — Osborn pitched four solid innings to help Point finish off a sweep of Pikeville to open the year. Pitching in his home county with the series being played at LakePoint, Osborn limited Pikeville to two runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk on 54 pitches. He was replaced to begin the top of the fifth with Point leading 7-2 in an eventual 7-3 win. Cohen Wilbanks (Lee Fr., Cartersville) — Wilbanks made his collegiate debut in the series finale of Lee's opening set of games Sunday versus Urbana. Wilbanks came on as a defensive replacement, catching the last inning of a 15-7 win, which capped off a three-game sweep. PRO BASKETBALL Elijah Robinson (Atenas Cordoba, Argentina; Excel Christian) — Robinson paced his team with 17 points in a 101-76 loss to Obras Thursday. Atenas rebounded to earn an 83-75 win over Hispano Sunday. In the victory, Robinson narrowly missed a double-double, securing 10 rebounds but totaling just nine points. COLLEGE BASKETBALL Jacquez Fountain (Albany Tech Fr., Cass) — Fountain finished with a team-high 17 points, but his team fell 79-62 to South Georgia Wednesday. He added two rebounds and an assist in the defeat. Saturday, Albany Tech bounced back with a victory over Southern Crescent Tech. Fountain again led the way with 22 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block. Ashton Hagans (Kentucky So., Cartersville native) — Hagans chipped in with 12 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals in a midweek victory over Vanderbilt. However, he struggled Saturday in a matchup with Auburn, finishing with five points, three assists and six turnovers in a road loss. Whitney Harris (Toccoa Falls So., Woodland) — Harris had nine points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals across three games this past week, as her team went 1-2. Harris had her best performance Friday at Judson College, where she scored seven points with six rebounds in a 68-67 overtime win. Evan Lee (Northland Fr., Excel Christian) — Lee played nine minutes but scored five points and had one assist in a 96-84 loss to Central Lakes Wednesday. Kimora McClinic (Middle Georgia State Jr., Cartersville) — McClinic finished with three points and an assist in a 74-57 win over Blue Mountain Thursday. She was scoreless, though, in a 65-60 loss to eighth-ranked Bethel Saturday. Coriana McDaniel (Andrew Fr., Adairsville) — McDaniel had one rebound apiece in her team's two games this week — a 61-42 win over Southern Crescent Tech and a 60-32 loss to Georgia Highlands College. Kyla Michienzi (Piedmont R-Fr., Cass) — Piedmont had just one game this past week, a 73-42 romp past Agnes Scott. In the win, Michienzi had four points, three steals and an assist. Jana Morning (Berry Jr., Cass) — Morning struggled with her shot Friday against Rhodes, hitting just 3 of 16 field-goal attempts, but she still produced a solid final line of 12 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals in a 64-58 loss. She bounced back in a big way Sunday, finishing 8-for-10 from the floor en route to 19 points in an 88-65 win over Hendrix. Morning added six assists, two rebounds and two steals in the victory. Josie Summerville (North Park So., Adairsville) — Summerville totaled 11 points and 15 rebounds, as North Park split its two games this past week. She had 10 boards in a 77-64 win over Illinois Wesleyan but fouled out of a 63-59 loss to North Central. Darius Thrower (Truett McConnell Sr., Excel Christian) — Thrower put together two of his best performances of the season this week, but he still couldn't help the unlucky Bears from their 15th and 16th consecutive losses. Thrower had 17 points and five rebounds against Tennessee Wesleyan Thursday, and he finished with 16 points and three boards versus Montreat. He shot a combined 11-for-24 from the field and 9-for-17 from 3-point range across both games. Alexis Ware (Piedmont Fr., Cass) — Ware posted two points and two rebounds in Tuesday's straight-forward victory. Nakiyah Washington (Piedmont Fr., Adairsville) — Washington saw just eight minutes against Agnes Scott, but she filled up the scoresheet in the abbreviated stint. She had six points, three steals, two rebounds and two assists. Carrod Watson (North Georgia Sr., Woodland) — Watson managed just one rebound in six minutes against Young Harris Thursday, but North Georgia eked out an 89-88 win. He had two points, three rebounds, an assist and a block in an 83-76 loss to Aiken Saturday. SOFTBALL Paris Poston (Columbus State So., Cartersville) — It wasn't a great opening weekend for Poston or her team, as she went 1-for-10 at the plate and the Cougars dropped their first four games — two each to Lenoir-Rhyne and Catawba. TRACK AND FIELD Terry Berdin (Reinhardt So., Cartersville) — Berdin finished seventh in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 23.49 seconds Saturday at the Tiger Indoor Invitational in Sewanee, Tennessee. Parker Breedlove (Reinhardt Fr., Cartersville) — Breedlove placed fifth in the men's 3000-meter run at the Tiger Indoor Invitational, finishing in just over 10 minutes. The Cartersville High School wrestling team had six individuals win their respective weight classes Saturday at the Region 5-AAAA Traditional Tournament at LaGrange. Tyler Earick (113 pounds) and Jabril Williams (160) repeated as region champs. They were joined by Giles Turner (120), Rashun Hurst (195), Collin Buffaloe (220) and Shadre Hurst (285) who will all be top seeds at the state sectionals in Perry. Cartersville also won six of its seven third-place bouts. Eoin Neal (126), Joshua Alvarez (132), Brady Jenkins (145), Lyle Forristall (152), Rashar Locklear (170) and Rashad Hurst (182) each won their final match. The lone fourth-place qualifier for the Canes was Caiden Tanner at 106 pounds.

The Woodland High School wrestling team had all fourteen wrestlers finish in the top three places of their respective weight divisions Saturday as the Wildcats won the 2020 Region 7AAAAA Traditional Tournament at Carrollton. Woodland had six first place winners, six region runners-up, and a pair of third place winners. Cass, competing at the same region tournament, finished second with four weight division champions and three competitors to finish second. Two other Colonels placed fourth. Woodland finished with 270.5 team points. Cass was next with 153. Carrollton (140.5), Kell (123), and Hiram (116) rounded out the top five teams. The State Sectionals will be next weekend at Alexander High School and the GHSA State Traditional Championship Tournament begins Thursday, February 13 at the Macon Centreplex. Adairsville was second with 194. Calhoun placed third with 160 and Coahulla Creek finished fourth with 155 points. The GHSA State Traditional Sectionals are next weekend at South Forsyth and the Championship Tournament begins Thursday, February 13 at the Macon Centreplex.

The Cartersville girls and boys basketball teams wrapped up the 2019-20 regular season and celebrated their seniors at The Storm Center Saturday with a pair of outstanding efforts. The Canes defeated the visiting Troup Tigers 76-70 behind a 29-point effort by Kolbe Benham and the Lady Canes took the unbeaten Lady Tigers to the wire before falling 35-31. The Cartersville boys led 16-10 after one quarter, 33-19 at the intermission, and 54-42 heading into the final eight minutes before holding off the Tigers for a six-point win. In addition to Benham’s contributions, Micah Tart and Amarai Orr followed with 16 and 11 points, respectively. Kyler Johnson scored seven points. Marquail Coaxum finished with six. Robert Novak had five points and Kam Callahan added two for the Hurricanes. K.J. Tucker scored 24 points to lead Troup (11-11, 5-7). Gabe Cofield added 23 for the Tigers. The win by Cartersville (8-12, 4-8) earns the No. 5-seed in the Region 5-AAAA Tournament next week and keeps the Canes out of a Monday play-in game. The Canes will open tournament play Wednesday at LaGrange High School in a rematch against the Troup Tigers. TROUP 35, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 31 The Troup County girls finished off a 22-0 regular season Saturday at The Storm Center with a win over Cartersville, but it didn’t come easily. Despite not scoring in the second quarter, the Lady Canes almost chased down the visiting Lady Tigers down the stretch. The game was tied 10-10 after one quarter before Troup took a 24-10 lead in the second quarter. The Tigers extended their lead to 30-12 through three quarters before Cartersville outscored them 19-5 in the final period. Alexcia Murphy led Troup with 14 points. Ambert Gilbert scored eight. Ariana Cochran led Cartersville with 11 points. Naijah Evans followed with six. Jada Cunningham scored five. Lehla Thomas finished with four points. Lexie Henderson and Cio Seigler added three and two points, respectively. Cartersville (10-14, 3-9) will open the Region 5-AAAA Tournament Monday in a play-in game against LaGrange at Cedartown at 6 p.m.
