The Lady Colonels and Colonels both picked up Region 7-AAAAA wins Tuesday night at Woodland while the Adairsville teams lost at home to Calhoun and the Excel Christian Academy boys fell at Gordon Lee. CASS BOYS 80, WOODLAND 42 The Colonels jumped out to a 25-6 lead by the end of the first quarter Tuesday night and held leads of 44-18 at halftime and 59-31 through three quarters on their way to an 80-42 victory at Woodland. Zaylan Chaney poured in 26 points for Cass as teammates C.J. Pipkin and Braxton Benham joined in double figures with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Alfred Washington contributed seven for the Colonels. Jaquan Heard and Jordan Ford had four each. Andrew Glaze, Jackson Hale, and Ethan McIntyre added two apiece. Jaden Johnson led the Woodland scorers with 19 points. K.J. Rogers had six. DiAnthony Heathcock finished with five. Kyler Williams and Jamison Lawrence scored four each. Woodland (2-20, 0-13) hosts Hiram Friday at 7:30 p.m. Cass (14-9, 9-5) plays at Villa Rica Friday at 7:30 p.m. CASS GIRLS 42, WOODLAND 38 In a close contest throughout, the Lady Colonels edged Woodland Tuesday night 42-38. Woodland led 9-8 after one quarter with Cass holding a 20-13 advantage at the intermission. The Lady Cats drew even at 29 apiece by the end of the third quarter, but Cass prevailed over the final eight minutes for a four-point win. Claire Davis had a game-high 20 points to lead the Lady Colonels in scoring. Londaisha Smith followed with 13. Ariana Hames and Haley Johnson rounded out the remainder of the Cass scoring with five and four points, respectively. Ansley Evans led Woodland with 11 points. Carli Clymer and Abigail Taylor contributed eight each. Jordan Thompson finished with five points. Morgan Cooper scored four and Lauren Morris added two for the Lady Cats. CALHOUN 62, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 26 Yatorrean Hale scored 11 points and Ji’Leyah Mitchll six for the Lady Tigers, but the Adairsville girls lost to Calhoun Tuesday night at home, 62-26. The Lady Jackets improved to 12-9 on the season and 7-5 in Region 6-AAA with their win. Adairsville (5-16, 2-11) travel to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday for a 7 p.m. start. CALHOUN 63, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 46 The Adairsville boys narrowed the Calhoun whittled the Calhoun lead down to six points early in the third quarter Tuesday night, but the visiting Jackets pulled away in the remainder of the period on their way to a 63-46 Region 6-AAA win. Calhoun led 16-12 after one quarter and was ahead 35-22 at halftime before the Tigers cut the lead to a half dozen. The Yellow Jackets (13-7, 8-4) pulled back ahead to lead 55-36 by the end of the third quarter on their way to a 17-point victory. Caleb Boone scored a game-high 22 points to lead Calhoun. Gage Maffetone followed with 19. Jaylan Harris contributed 17 points to the Yellow Jackets’ cause. Savaun Henderson led Adairsville with 14 points. T.J. Printup scored 10. Conner Crunkleton contributed five points while Malachi Gardner and Jaxon Welchel added four apiece. Adairsville (8-12, 5-8) makes the trip to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe Friday night for an 8:30 p.m. start. GORDON LEE 52, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 45 The Excel Eagles led for much of the contest Tuesday night at Gordon Lee, but were outscored 22-12 in the final eight minutes as they suffered a 52-45 loss to the Trojans. ECA led 22-17 at halftime and were still ahead 33-30 at the end of the third quarter. Gordon Lee’s Sam Norton made four, three-pointers in the final period and finished with a game-high 21 points to pace the Trojans. Weston Beagles added 16 points for the hosts. Rayshawn Womack led Excel with 15 points. Kalil Holley followed with 12. Brenden Quillin, Rashard Doyal, and Jakaden Barkley rounded out the Eagles’ scoring with eight, six, and four points, respectively. Gordon Lee improved to 5-16 overall and 1-10 in Region 6-A with their victory. Excel (3-18, 2-9) hosts Mt. Zion-Carroll Friday at 7 p.m. in their Senior Night celebration. The Cartersville boys held off a fourth quarter rally by Central-Carroll Tuesday night at The Storm Center to defeat the visiting Lions by two points in Region 5-AAAA action. The Lady Canes had a more difficult evening against the 8th-ranked Lady Lions. After trailing 13-12 at the end of the first quarter, the Hurricanes took leads of 24-19 at halftime and 40-29 through three quarters before holding off a late run by Central-Carroll for a 50-48 Region 5-AAAA win. Micah Tart and Kolbe Benham led the scoring for Cartersville with 12 points each. Kyler Johnson tossed in seven. Amarai Orr and Robert Novak chipped in six each. Kam Callahan contributed four, Marquail Coaxum two, and Manny Hayes one point for the Canes. Camden McClure led the visiting Lions with 17 points. Jayden Green followed with 13 and Trey Powell scored nine for Central-Carroll (11-10, 2-6). The Georgia High School Association announced Tuesday the addition of Bass Fishing to its lineup of sponsored sports and activities beginning in the 2020-21 school year. From the GHSA web site: Bass Fishing will be a co-ed sport where girls and boys may compete side by side in this State Championship event. Bass Fishing will be an activity with no designated season.  Four (4) State Qualifying tournaments will be held in different areas of the state beginning in January of each year, with the open State Championship being held in March or April.  The exact schedule will be published every July/August of the new school year.  The GHSA will partner with The Bass Federation/The Student Angler Federation/FLW for this new and exciting offering. This week’s review of college and pro local athletes includes the conclusion of the college football season, indoor track and field and swimming along with pro and college basketball. TREVOR LAWRENCE — Clemson University (So., QB, Cartersville HS)… Lawrence ran for a first quarter touchdown and was 18-for-37 for 234 yards passing in the Tigers’ national championship game loss to LSU last Monday in New Orleans, 42-25. He also completed a two-point conversion pass to Amari Rodgers in the third quarter that narrowed the LSU lead to 28-25 at the time. Lawrence also finished the night with 10 rushes for 49 yards. For the season, he threw for 3,665 yards and 36 touchdowns and added 563 rushing yards with nine touchdowns. Clemson finished the season 14-1 and played in its second straight championship game after winning the title with Lawrence as a freshman starter. TRACK AND FIELD TERRY BERDIN — Reinhardt University (So., Cartersville HS)… placed 16th in 7.19 in the finals of the Emory Crossplex Showdown Sunday in Birmingham. The Adairsville High School swim team outdistanced Cartersville Saturday 283-245 to win the 2019-20 Bartow County Swim Championships at the Adairsville swim facility. Woodland was third in the combined scores at 114 with Cass following with 64 points. Cartersville had the top girls scores, just ahead of Adairsville 160-130, while the Tigers boys team finished 153-85 ahead of the Canes. The Cartersville Lady Canes and Hurricanes basketball teams came up just short in a pair of very close games Saturday night at Cedartown with the girls falling 39-32 and the boys dropping a 59-56 final in overtime. The Lady Canes stayed close the entire night, but Cedartown held on down the stretch — limited Cartersville to only four, fourth-quarter points — as the Lady Bulldogs won at home Saturday night, 39-32, in Region 5-AAAA action. Cedartown led 11-7 after one quarter, 19-16 at the intermission, and 29-28 heading into the final period on their way to a seven-point victory. Keke Turner scored a game-high 18 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Qiara Watson followed with nine points while Marycille Brumby and Zoe Daimond Pasley posted 6 each for Cedartown. Lehla Thomas led Cartersville with seven points, four boards, a pair of assists, and one steal. Naijah Evans, Miya Moore, and Ariana Cochran followed with five points apiece. Evans and Cochran grabbed four rebounds and Moore collected three. Jakaya Draughn finished with four points. Kierra Milline (four rebounds), Jada Cunningham, and Cio Seigler (five boards) scored two points each for the Lady Canes. Cedartown improved to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in Region 5-AAAA. CEDARTOWN 59, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 56 (Overtime) The Hurricanes had a nine-point lead, 36-27, heading into the fourth quarter Saturday night at Cedartown but the Bulldogs forced overtime and won in the extra period 59-56. M.J. Holiday paced Cedartown with 15 points. Jashadd Woodall followed with 11 while D.J. Frazier knocked down a pair of shots from behind the arc in the overtime period to score 10 in the game for the Bulldogs. A close score all night, Cedartown led 6-5 after one quarter. Cartersville was ahead 20-16 at halftime and 36-27 through three stanzas before the Bulldogs sent the game to overtime knotted at 45 apiece. Kolbe Benham scored a game-high 20 points to lead Cartersville in the scoring column. Kam Callahan was next with nine. Kyler Johnson scored eight. Marquail Coaxum contributed seven points. Amarai Orr finished with six. Micah Tart and Robert Novak chipped in three points each. With their win, Cedartown improved to 8-6 overall and 2-4 in Region 5-AAAA. The Woodland wrestling team captured the 2020 GHSA Team Duals State Championship for Class AAAAA Saturday by defeating Veterans High School in the finals at the Macon Centreplex , 47-15. Woodland’s performance wrapped up four dominating performances at the state tournament. The now two-time defending state champs beat Miller Grove (81-0), Walnut Grove (70-12), and Ola (62-6) to cruise into Saturday’s championship match. For the Wildcats, it is the wrestling program’s sixth overall state championship. Woodland won traditional titles in 2003 and 2019 to go with state duals championships in 2003, 2011, last season and this season. Two other local teams — Adairsville in Class AAA and Cartersville in Class AAAA — reached their respective state duals tournaments with runner-up finishes at the region level. Adairsville tied for fifth in the state by going 3-2 in the Class AAA tournament. The Tigers had wins over Pierce County (51-24), Brantley County (72-12), and Pike County (57-21). Adairsville lost in the championship bracket to Jackson County 51-24 in the quarterfinals and fell to Jefferson 39-24 in the consolation rounds. North Hall won the AAA title with Sonoraville finishing as runner-up. In Class AAAA, Cartersville went 2-2 to finish tied for seventh. The Hurricanes had wins over Cairo (59-21) and Flowery Branch (41-33) to their credit. The Canes lost to eventual AAAA state champion Woodward Academy 45-30 in the championship bracket quarterfinals and fell to eventual fourth place finisher Northwest Whitfield in the consolation rounds, 50-27. The Excel Christian Academy boys along with the Woodland girls and boys basketball teams lost region contests Saturday afternoon. Hosting their annual homecoming game, the Eagles lost to Darlington 61-37. The Woodland girls dropped a 59-29 decision at Hiram while the Wildcats lost to the Hornets, 84-19. DARLINGTON 61, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 37 Following a close first quarter that Darlington led 12-11, the Tigers pushed their lead to 33-19 by halftime and were ahead 42-23 through three quarters Saturday afternoon at Excel Christian Academy. Braden Bell led Darlington with 16 points. D.J. Johnson and Patrick Shelley both contributed 10 for the Tigers as they improved to 7-10 overall and 6-3 in Region 6-A. Rayshawn Womack was the top scorer for ECA with nine points. Rashard Doyal and Kalil Holley followed with eight each. Jakaden Barkley and Brenden Quillin tossed in five points each. Jake Murray finished with two and Trippe Anderson one for the Eagles. Excel (3-17, 2-8) plays at Gordon Lee Tuesday night at 7 p.m, hosts Mt. Zion-Carroll Friday at 7 p.m., and at Lassiter Saturday at 5 p.m. HIRAM 59, WOODLAND GIRLS 29 The Lady Hornets evened their season record Saturday at home with a 59-29 Region 7-AAAAA win over the visiting Lady Cats. Woodland (4-16, 2-10) hosts Cass Tuesday and Hiram Friday. Both tips are 6 p.m. HIRAM 84, WOODLAND BOYS 19 Hiram led 32-4 after one quarter and 55-7 at halftime Saturday afternoon in their 84-19 win over visiting Woodland. The Hornets improved to 14-6 for the season and 9-3 in region games. Woodland (2-19, 0-12 Region 7-AAAAA) has home games this week against Cass Tuesday and Hiram Friday. On a tough night for local basketball teams, all nine teams from Cartersville and Bartow County suffered region losses Friday night. TROUP COUNTY 56, CARTERSVILLE GIRLS 37 Miya Moore and Cio Seigler scored 10 points each for Cartersville, but the Lady Canes fell at Troup County Friday night 56-37. Ariana Cochran chipped in six points and had five rebounds for Cartersville. Jaka’ya Draughn finished with five points. Jada Cunningham had four and Kiera Milline, who grabbed five boards, scored two points for the Lady Canes. With their win, the AAAA 5th-ranked Lady Tigers improved to 15-0 on the season and 5-0 in Region 5-AAAA. Cartersville (8-10, 1-5) plays at Cedartown Saturday night at 6 p.m. KELL 48, WOODLAND GIRLS 36 The Kell girls remained undefeated Friday night with their 20th win of the year in a victory at Woodland, 48-36. The visiting Lady Longhorns had eight players in the scoring column led by Crystal Henderson with nine points. Jamiah Gregory and Amaya Moss added eight each. Woodland was led by Morgan Cooper with 17 and Carli Clymer with 10 points. Ansley Evans and Abigail Taylor scored four each. Jordan Thompson added one. Class AAAAA 2nd-ranked Kell stays atop the Region 7-AAAAA standings at 11-0. Woodland (4-15, 2-9) travels to Hiram Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. COAHULLA CREEK 71, ADAIRSVILLE GIRLS 31 The Lady Tigers fell behind early and trailed the host Lady Colts 38-10 by halftime in a 71-31 loss Friday night at Coahulla Creek. Katelyn Richard poured in 29 points for the Colts. Brinkley Reed added 16. Autumn Richards scored seven for Adairsville. Ji’Leyah Mitchell and Haley Stiles followed with six points each for the Lady Tigers. Adairsville (5-15, 2-10) hosts Calhoun Tuesday night at 6 p.m. and travels to Lakeview-Ft. Oglethorpe next Friday night for a 7 p.m. start. CARROLLTON 65, CASS GIRLS 38 The Lady Colonels trailed 17-11 after one quarter and fell behind 33-15 by halftime in a Region 7-AAAAA loss Friday night at Carrollton. The host Lady Trojans improved to 13-8 overall and 9-3 in Region 7-AAAAA. Cass (15-7, 6-7) plays at Woodland Tuesday night at 6 p.m. and travels to Villa Rica next Friday — also a 6 p.m. tip. CARROLLTON 69, CASS BOYS 56 (Overtime) The Cass boys battled with host Carrollton evenly through the first 32 minutes Friday night, but lost in overtime to the Class AAAAA 9th-ranked Trojans, 69-56. Cass led 14-13 after one quarter and the two teams were knotted at 21-all at halftime. The Colonels led 36-35 after three quarters and had a late 51-50 lead before the game went to overtime with the teams tied at 53. The host Trojans outscored Cass 16-3 in the extra period to take home a 13-point region win and earn a season split with the Colonels. Carrollton (14-7, 8-4) was led by Melvin Edwards with 22 points and Marcellious Lockett with 20. Zaylan Chaney scored a game-hit 24 points for Cass. Braxton Benham followed with nine and C.J. Pipkin added eight points for the Colonels. Cass (14-8, 9-4) plays at Woodland Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. and will travel to Villa Rica next Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. tip. TROUP COUNTY 74, CARTERSVILLE BOYS 67 Jaquavious Whitfield and Gabe Cofield scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, Friday night to lead the host Tigers to a 74-67 Region 5-AAAA victory over Cartersville. Troup led 36-25 at halftime and held a 52-43 advantage after three quarters before holding on for a seven-point win. The Tigers improved to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in Region 5-AAAA. Kam Callahan led Cartersville with 21 points. The Canes (5-9, 1-5) play at Cedartown Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. NORTH COBB CHRISTIAN 106, EXCEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY BOYS 43 North Cobb Christian improved to 11-8 overall and 7-1 in Region 6-A with a 106-43 win Friday night over Excel Christian Academy. Kalil Holley led ECA with 17 points. Rashard Doyal contributed 12 and Rayshawn Womack scored seven. Excel (3-16, 2-7) hosts Darlington Saturday at 4:30 p.m. COAHULLA CREEK 44, ADAIRSVILLE BOYS 32 A slow offensive start led to an Adairsville loss Friday night at Coahulla Creek in Region 6-AAA action. The host Colts led 15-7 after the first eight minutes and held a 25-11 advantage ath halftime. Adairsville narrowed the margin to 33-22 by the end of the third period but eventually fell by 12. Gage Seibennener led Coahulla Creek with 12 points. Barrett Barbee followed with nine as the Colts improved to 8-12 overall and 5-8 in region play. Gaven Crunkleton led the Tigers with 16 points. Savaun Henderson and Malachi Gardner followed with eight and seven points, respectively. Adairsville (8-11, 5-7) hosts Calhoun Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. and travels to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe next Friday for an 8:30 p.m. tip. KELL 88, WOODLAND BOYS 28 Class AAAAA fifth-ranked Kell took a 30-5 lead after one quarter Friday night and led 58-12 at halftime on their way to a convincing Region 7-AAAAA win at Woodland. The visiting Longhorns improved to 16-4 on the year and 10-1 in region action. Woodland (2-18, 0-11) travels to Hiram Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. tip and will host Cass Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Woodland wrestling team won again Friday night at the GHSA Class AAAAA State Duals Championship in Macon to advance to the state title match against Veterans Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats have one-sided wins in this year’s tournament over Miller Grove, Walnut Grove, and Ola to reach the championship match. Veterans has reached the state championship match with wins over Starr’s Mill (74-6), Union Grove (50-22), and Buford (37-25). The Cartersville wrestling team finished seventh in Class AAAA by going 2-2 in matches at the Macon Centreplex. Cartersville defeated Cairo in the first round before falling to Woodward Academy in the state quarterfinals. The Canes beat Flowery Branch Friday in their first consolation match 41-33, but fell to Northwest Whitfield, 50-27. In Class AAA, Adairsville remains alive in the consolation rounds with a chance to finish as high as third place. The Tigers beat Pierce County in the first round Thursday, but lost to Jackson County to be sent to the consolation bracket. Friday, Adairsville defeated Brantley County 72-12 and Pike County 57-21 to reach the consolation semifinals. The Tigers will wrestle Jefferson next and can finish no worse than a tie for fifth at the state tournament.

The Woodland wrestling team remains unbeaten and heads into Friday night’s GHSA Class AAAAA semifinals of the 2020 State Duals Championship as the team to beat. Top-seeded Woodland trounced Miller Grove 81-0 and Walnut Grove 70-12 in the first two rounds Thursday at the Macon Centreplex. The Wildcats will face Ola in the semifinals Friday night at 6 p.m. Ola just edged Harris County in the state quarterfinals Thursday, 37-32, to reach the matchup with Woodland. The other Class AAAAA semifinal will feature Buford and Veterans. Those two squads will also square off at 6 p.m. Friday night. Cartersville and Adairsville won opening round matches in their respective classifications. In Class AAAA, Cartersville beat Cairo 59-21 while Adairsville toppled Pierce County in Class AAA, 51-24. The Canes and Tigers both fell in their quarterfinal matches, however. Cartersville lost to Woodward Academy 45-30 and Adairsville fell 51-24 to Jackson County. Wrestlebacks continue throughout the day Friday as teams compete for as high as a third place finish. Adairsville faces Brantley County Friday morning in the consolation rounds. Cartersville’s first consolation round opponent is the survivor of a match between Columbus and Flowery Branch.
